I realised that I had things in my head not like what I had been taught — not like what I had seen — shapes and ideas so familiar to me that it hadn’t occurred to me to put them down.  I decided to stop painting, to put away everything I had done, and to start to say the things that were my own.  This was one of the best times in my life.  There was no one around to look at what I was doing — no one interested — no one to say anything about it one way or another.  I was alone and singularly free, working on my own, unknown — no one to satisfy but myself.

Life is change.  The capacity to grow and evolve is what separates living things from mere objects.  Stasis is death, to an organism and to a society.  A healthy society is vibrant and dynamic, generating ideas and innovation in every field.

But our society – unlike most in the world – presupposes that freedom and liberty are in a frame of reference that makes the individual, not government, the keeper of his tastes, beliefs, and ideas.  That is the philosophy of the First Amendment;  and it is this article of faith that sets us apart from most nations in the world.

The idea of painless, nonthreatening coercion is an illusion.  Fear is the inseparable companion of coercion, and its inescapable consequence.  If you think it your duty to make children do what you want, whether they will or not, then it follows inexorably that you must make them afraid of what will happen to them if they don’t do what you want.  You can do this in the old-fashioned way, openly and avowedly, with the threat of harsh words, infringement of liberty, or physical punishment.  Or you can do it in the modern way, subtly, smoothly, quietly, by withholding the acceptance and approval which you and others have trained the children to depend on;  or by making them feel that some retribution awaits them in the future, too vague to imagine but too implacable to escape.

With ideas it is like with dizzy heights you climb:  at first they cause you discomfort and you are anxious to get down, distrustful of your own powers;  but soon the remoteness of the turmoil of life and the inspiring influence of the altitude calm your blood;  your step gets firm and sure and you begin to look-for dizzier heights.

I write, because I feel compelled to write.   My mind overflows with thoughts and ideas that are begging to be put onto paper.
Even though I love writing, it can be difficult.   The words don’t always flow out of me.   At times, I look inside myself and find an empty abyss.   It’s frustrating, but I cannot quit.
Writing is a part of me.   It’s what I do.   It’s who I am.

The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result.  He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up.  His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way.

Introverts like being introverts.  We are drawn to ideas, we are passionate observers, and for us, solitude is rich and generative.

To this day, I remain convinced of this basic philosophy:  no matter what quandaries we face — business problems, health issues, relationship difficulties, as well as the great scientific, social, and cultural challenges of our time — there is an idea that can enable us to prevail.  Furthermore, we can find that idea.  And when we find it, we need to implement it.  My life has been shaped by this imperative.  The power of an idea — this is itself an idea.

The mind is sharper and keener in seclusion and uninterrupted solitude.  Originality thrives in seclusion free of outside influences beating upon us to cripple the creative mind.  Be alone — that is the secret of invention:  be alone, that is when ideas are born.

…Looking at a different version of ambition to my own, I went off to university or my life’s idea of sanctuary.  About two terms into my journey some student said, “It’s so boring here” and I looked at him with amazement and said “Come with me.”
I took him to the library and, pointing in the direction of the books, whispered, “Here, on every shelf, you can connect with the finest minds published throughout the history of man.  You can discuss any subject you choose and those most nuanced and aware in their field will share their insights with you, and you have all the time you want to enjoy that conversation:  is that not a wonder and a privilege?”
