Although it’s out of fashion, I remain an American Exceptionalist.   This country really is different, in ways that make it, in words used by presidents too numerous to list, “a city on a hill,” a beacon for the optimistic and the innovative.  That’s not to say I think America is perfect – I doubt anyone could get this far in the book and think that’s my view – as a nation born not of ethnicity or dynastic conquest but rather built on the foundation of an ideal, it holds a special promise.  It remains a promise unfulfilled, but one I believe is within our grasp.

It may not always feel like you’re making progress, but you are.  Every time you decide to get up with a smile on your face, you’re making progress.  Whenever you choose to keep going when all you want to do is give up, that’s progress.  When you open your mind and consider things in a way that you never have before, you’re moving forward.  The vast majority of progress isn’t made in big noticeable steps, but in the millions of small decisions you make on a daily basis that keep you moving in the right direction.  So don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t seem like you’re getting anywhere.  The long trail behind you shows just how far you’ve come.

One day, I hope we will know the answers to all these questions.  But there are other challenges, other big questions on the planet which must be answered, and these will also need a new generation who are interested and engaged, and have an understanding of science.  How will we feed an ever-growing population?  Provide clean water, generate renewable energy, prevent and cure disease and slow down global climate change?  I hope that science and technology will provide the answers to these questions, but it will take people, human beings with knowledge and understanding, to implement these solutions.  Let us fight for every woman and every man to have the opportunity to live healthy, secure lives, full of opportunity and love.  We are all time travellers, journeying together into the future.  But let us work together to make that future a place we want to visit.  Be brave, be curious, be determined, overcome the odds.  It can be done.

A contented mind is the greatest blessing a man can enjoy in this world.

What I always hated and detested and cursed above all things was this contentment, this healthiness and comfort, this carefully preserved optimism of the middle classes, this fat and prosperous brood of mediocrity.

Perhaps most striking, though, is [Dr. Paul] Farmer’s insistence that his optimism is, in fact, logical.  “When you settle on a problem, devote the resources to it and have at least some ability to incorporate new information, every time, it gets better,” he says.  “I don’t have any experience, anywhere, where you just apply yourself, along with others, and then do not see progress.  My optimism has pretty honest roots.
“Although,” Farmer adds after a brief pause, “I would probably be an optimist even if not.”

Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism.  It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.
