A man who becomes conscious of the responsibility he bears toward a human being who affectionately waits for him, or to an unfinished work, will never be able to throw away his life.  He knows the “why” for his existence, and will be able to bear almost any “how”.

Love is work.  It’s appreciation of strengths, forgiveness of faults.  It’s acceptance of the whole person, not just the parts that are easy to love.  It’s a struggle, not a fairy tale.  That’s why choosing the right person is so important.  Love is about knowing who you want there beside you when you’re at your most weak and vulnerable.  Who can give you hope when it seems as though you have none left?  Who can pull you out of the darkness when it envelops you?  Who is worth going through the struggle for?  Love is work, but it’s the most rewarding work you’ll ever do.

It normally takes seven to seven and a half years of retirement for the average American to “recover” all of the funds paid into their Social Security retirement funds during their forty odd years of work.  After that, every payment SSA provides you is gravy (mostly interest earned on the funds you withheld in trust / savings with SSA).
For the last few years I have been charting my progress on getting back all of the funds I’ve paid into Social Security.  Waaay back in ’02 or ’03 I attended a briefing about SSA and got the above information.  It turns out I misheard or didn’t quite remember the information provided…  It seems the seven year mark is for the entire amount paid into SSA by you and by your various employers (not “just” what you paid in individually).  In any case, tomorrow marks the start of my eighth year of retirement (drawing SSA).  Congrats to me for making it to the gravy!    —    kmab

I don’t say:  ‘can’t do that’, ‘won’t do that’.  I’ve never thought in that way about work.  The genuine truth, and I do think about this a lot, is that I’m one of the least competitive people you’ll ever meet.  Except with myself.

As acrimony gets a tighter grip on democratic society, good people can either sit on the sidelines, debilitated by angst and daily distractions, or they can overcome indecision and work towards harmony.

Work is slower than it used to be, and I know that I do things partly in order to prove that I am still alive enough to finish them.  I’m working hard, and I think you are too.  I honestly believe that there are things that make the long experience worth struggling through, although now and then, on a creaky day, it is rather difficult to accept what are too loosely called “the rewards of old age.”  I don’t mind looking old, but at times I resent the infirmities of the Aging Process.

Luck means the hardships and privations which you have not hesitated to endure, the long nights you have devoted to work.  Luck means the appointments you have never failed to keep;  the trains you have never failed to catch.

We cannot predict the value our work will provide to the world.  That’s fine.  It is not our job to judge our own work.  It is our job to create it, to pour ourselves into it, and to master our craft as best we can.
We all have the opportunity to squeeze every ounce of greatness out of ourselves that we can.  We all have the chance to do our share.
