Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Heh Heh - Potential EU Leaving Names

- Sources: NBA players will not be required to get COVID-19 vaccinations. "NBA referees and most NBA staff are mandated to be vaccinated." Another example of one set of rules for the "elites" and a separate set of rules for the "servants."

- Modern Horror Story

- Cool - Winnie the Poo's house in now on Airbnb. What parent hasn't played Poosticks with their kids? (HT Daddypundit)

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Wonder if the Texas legislature could force the University of Texas to change their name to the University of Austin when they leave the Big 12 for the SEC to kneecap the Longhorns recruiting and to help other in-state programs that are remaining in (or coming into) the Big 12... Does England still exist? How is that possible? Didn't they vote for Brexit? What happened to all the horrible things that were supposed to befall them? Just a reminder not to believe the FUD the media tries to peddle to you... The Relative Size of Particles... The original name for Penicillin was Mold Juice. Think the original name is so much better... Octopus Seven Two would also make a great name for a band...  Think one reason many middle-aged Americans seem so laissez-faire about COVID is because someone asking "Did you get tested?" had much scarier connotations when they were growing up then today...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Interesting that some people seem so surprised that Jeff Bezos and his brother are going into space on the rockets Bezos' company Blue Origin makes. A guy who is so fascinated by space that he builds a rocket company wants to go to space is surprising or is news? Really?...  Under the Biden Administration is it OK to pay your taxes in primal screams? Seems like that should be an option... Good question: Why was Dr. Fauci put in charge of the Covid-19 pandemic after his disastrous HIV epidemic performance? I have to imagine that now that Fauci has little political benefit to Democrats - they are going to let him burn at the stake when the pitchforks come for him... So do you remember all those awful predictions that were supposed to come be be if the English passed Brexit? Yeah those who made those predictions weren't held accountable either...

Flotsam and Jetsam

 Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Remember all those dire predictions about if England voted for Brexit? Yeah - whatever happened to those predictions?... Wonder if the military bases in San Diego can utilize the power from one of the nuclear powered aircraft carriers in port to keep their grid up and AC on during the blackouts. Would be great advertisement for nuclear power if they could... Pearl Kendrick and Grace Eldering almost single handedly eliminated whooping cough (which was the major killer in the day) yet they are hardly remembered by history... The original name for Penicillin was Mold Juice. Too bad that didn't catch on. It would also make for a great name for band of microbiologists... Minced Kidneys of Monkeys would also be a good name for a science band... I would give $1,000 to any journalist who asks and gets Joe Biden to answer the question, "Now that Tesla has shown that electric cars can compete against internal combustion engines isn't it time for America to also give steam powered engines another look see?"...

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Matt Taibbi breaks down the IG Report. The FBI looks bad but the press looks even worse. Taibbi has quickly become my favorite reporter.

- Wisdom from Naval.

- The Not-To-Do List: 9 Habits to Stop Now. I'm pretty good with these but I do have to work on numbers 5 and 8.

- How to make money online.

- Sadly this story on Five Dimes founder "Tony" Creighton now has a definitive tragic ending

- Haven't been following Brexit but this ad would make me vote for Boris Johnson if I lived in England

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Wonder if protesters once they finish with Civil War generals then turn their attention to any statues featuring horses with the thought that they represent forced servitude and animal cruelty. Don't laugh this could easily happen... France has turned into one of the worldwide threats to free speech... "When you arise in the morning think of what a privilege it is to be alive, to think, to enjoy, to love." - Marcus Aurelius... Such a cool graphic - gives you a perspective on just how short human history actually is... I freely admit I have no idea what's happening with Brexit... 100% true!... Congrats to Holy Cross and Celtics legend Bob Cousy on being presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom...

- I love Alex Trebek. I'm praying for him to beat the long odds. He's the best!

- In other medical news - Billionaire diamond trader dies during penis enlargement surgery.

- The physics still hiding in the Higgs Boson. Going to have to read this a second time (for comprehension reasons)

- Clint Eastwood's Code (Via Execupundit)

- Cool - the moment of impact for a bullet

- Well that's one way to look at Brexit I guess

- Israeli company can produce 5,000 liters of clean drinking water from just the air and a good electrical supply. The cost per liter is estimated at just $.02-04 per liter!

Brexit Explained by Hooliganism

I recently read Bill Buford's fascinating 1990 book Among the Thugs. The book is a captivating look at the 8 years Buford spent learning the behavior and motivations of the world of English football (soccer) hooliganism. Three of the main motivations for acts of violence by club supporters were loyalty, patriotism and helplessness. On page 301 Buford writes:

Many things fell into place. This chant [England! England! England!]; it was the only one I had heard in a day otherwise characterized by its enforced sullen silence. And now: this declaration for England. It was such a simple but enormous thought: these fools, despised at home, ridiculed in the press, incapable of being contained by any act of impulsive legislation that the government had devised, wanted an England to defend. They didn't want Europe: they didn't understand Europe and didn't want to. They wanted a war. They wanted a nation to belong to and fight for, even if the fight was this absurd piece of street theater with the local Italian police.

That single paragraph helps in large part to explain why the Brexit vote was so successful.

Pick up the book if you have a chance. It's worth the read.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Happy 90th birthday to comedy genius Mel Brooks... Heh heh... Watched a Dennis Miller comedy special from 2003 called The Raw Feed last night. Let me just say Miller's comedy doesn't stand up very well... Heh heh... Just a reminder - live every week like it's Shark Week!... Is this a subtle swipe at Baseball Prospectus or Baseball America?...

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Some interesting perspective on Brexit from Gary Kasparov

- Heh heh - speaking of Brexit

- An uncertain future for Earth's largest telescope

- This is a problem elected officials should make a priority instead of their hissy fit sit-ins - mental illness and civil liberties. What can you do for a person with obvious mental health issues but who refuses help?

- I LOVE this story! Maine's First Lady gets a summer job as a waitress to help with household income. Good for her (although Maine really should pay their Governor more)

- It's official - Switzerland now has the best coffee shops in the world!

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

What if the drop in the British Pound was not due to the Brexit vote but due to the Led Zeppelin verdict instead?... Heh heh... On this day in 1916 the Battle of the Somme began. Over 1 million shells would be fired... Half Digested Peanuts would be a good name for a fantasy baseball team or band... Another reminder that things are different in Russia... "In the future everyone will be Oakland's Chief of Police for 15 minutes" - Andy Warhol... So does this mean Global Warming is over?...
