Flotsam and Jetsam

 Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The Biden Department of Justice has asked all law enforcement departments to refer to any public mention of gangs as "mostly peaceful"... To be honest I had forgot about the existence of Shepard Smith too... Is it just me because I remember there being many more hummingbirds and ice cream trucks when I was a kid than I see today... At this point I feel like Captain Quint in JAWS but instead of a lifejacket it's "I'll never put on a mask again!"... Good for Pitbull - he gets it... If there was a variant of gout that caused inflammation and extreme pain in the penis - it would be called a bigger medical emergency than COVID ever was...  Honestly this was the thing that bothered me the most of the that picture. "I'll never put on a mask again"...

- Today's must read is Darryl Cooper (Martyr Made) explaining his viral Twitter thread that was read on air by Tucker Carlson and referenced at CPAC by President Trump. - American business has to step up to challenge China's behavior. Good for Patrick Collison, the CEO of Stripe, "As a US business (and tech) community I think we should be significantly clearer about our horror at, and opposition to, the atrocities being committed by the Chinese government against its own people."

- I'm a bad person for laughing at this.

- John Boorman's awesome Lee Marvin story.

- How the magnetosphere shields Earth. Now picture that the axis (wobble) is changing or picture that the Earth's magnetic north pole is changing. Do you think those things could possibly effect the Earth's weather? Now consider both of those things are actually currently happening.

- According to science, if you are middle-aged or older, you should have a few drinks a week to keep your brain sharp.

- Interesting - has Atlantis been found off the coast of Cuba?

How History Could Have Been Different

Fidel Castro had a law degree and when he was young he joined the firm of Azpiazo, Castro and Resende. He didn't do very well in the practice. Castro was a young lawyer without any clients.

I can't help but wonder how history could have been different if only Castro had been a better lawyer. Or if he happened to get a big case or client. Would Fidel have been so hot for communism if he was sitting on a pile of money?

Haiti and Cuba

A strange thought struck me this morning - what if the earthquake that hit Haiti had hit Cuba instead? Would we have been as concerned? Would we have blamed the death and devastation on Cuba's failed mode of government? Would we have kept our pocketbooks closed? Would our government even allow aid to a country with whom we have banned any sort of trade? Would Guantanamo Bay have become the hub for all relief efforts?

I think the last sentence is true. Our military is leading the relief efforts in Haiti and I think the same would have been true for Cuba too.

Michael Moore and Cuba
"...Cuba is now the world's biggest prison for journalists and President Castro has become the 'Maximum Leader' of predators of press freedom." - Reporters Without Borders "Cuba" page
By now you may have heard that Michael Moore is in trouble for going to Cuba without the proper paperwork to film a "documentary" about how great the Cuban healthcare system is (because we all know that when people get really sick they skip places like Sloan Kettering and the Mayo Clinic in the US to go to Cuba). You may have also seen Fred Thompson's video response to Michael Moore too.

This situation made me think of a post I read from a couple of years ago. Especially this part:
The hideously depressing thing is that Cuba under Battista--Cuba in 1957--was a developed country. Cuba in 1957 had lower infant mortality than France, Belgium, West Germany, Israel, Japan, Austria, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Cuba in 1957 had doctors and nurses: as many doctors and nurses per capita as the Netherlands, and more than Britain or Finland. Cuba in 1957 had as many vehicles per capita as Uruguay, Italy, or Portugal. Cuba in 1957 had 45 TVs per 1000 people--fifth highest in the world. Cuba today has fewer telephones per capita than it had TVs in 1957.
Castro's government will allow Michael Moore to visit and make a "documentary" (is calling it propaganda too strong?) but they won't allow in the International Red Cross to visit the imprisoned journalists. What does that tell you? And what does that tell you about Michael Moore?
