Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Dan Carlin on UFO's - can we handle the truth? As an aside "Contact with Non-Human Entities" would be a good name for a fetish dating site.

- Found my spirit animal

- Travel and Leisure's Top Place to Go in 2023. (HT Tim Ferriss)

- Sean Peyton is not holding anything back on how bad the 2022 Broncos were. This is just putting more pressure on him to succeed.

The Sports Section is Dead. "Long live the sports section." Closely resembles my own evolution on the two announcements.

- Dan Carlin has a new Substack account (well new to me). Enjoy!

- Speaking of Substack - here's Matt Taibbi of Racket News on Where Have all the Liberals Gone? Good stuff.

- Used to enjoy Anchor Brewing but understand the move. Anchor was founded in 1886 and would not be surprised if a buyer was found and the brewery moved out of San Fran.

Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"It is easy to understand things once someone has thought them through. The difficulty lies in thinking them through in the first place." - Carlo Rovelli

"Life would be tragic if it weren't so funny." - Stephen Hawking

"Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth." - Marcus Aurelius

"My wish is for an American that matches the marketing material." - Dan Carlin

A Tom Hanks Kick

Lately I seem to be on a bit of a Tom Hanks kick.

Sunday I went to see his new movie News of the World - at a movie theater! This was probably the first time I'd been in a movie theater since maybe last February. It was a bit strange. I went with my girlfriend and there was only one other couple there. It was almost like having the place to ourselves.

The movie itself was entertaining. My girlfriend liked it but if I'm honest it was a bit predictable and if Tom Hanks wasn't the star - I probably would not have gone to see it.  IMDB has it rated as 6.8 Stars out of 10 and that seems about right.

Last week I re-watched Charlie Wilson's War - the 2007 Hanks vehicle which is similarly rated by IMDB (7 out of 10 Stars) but to me that movie had better pacing and dialog.

Recently I also read the C.S. Forester novel The Good Shepard mainly because Tom Hanks just did a movie based on the book called Greyhound (which I have not seen). I had heard Hanks describe the book/movie on a Dan Carlin podcast

Strangely enough, of the movies and the book - it was probably the podcast I most enjoyed. Anyway - been on a bit of a Tom Hanks kick lately.

Quotes forToday

Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"Life is not always a matter of holding good cards, but sometimes, playing a poor hand well." - Jack London

"Thought precedes action as lightning precedes thunder."- Heinrich Heine

"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them." -John Wayne in The Shootist

"Wise men speak because they have something to say. Fools because they have to say something." - Plato

"Nothing separates us [more] from human beings from earlier eras than how much less disease affects us. If we moderns lived for one year with the sort of death rates our pre-industrial age ancestors perpetually lived with, we'd be in societal shock." - Dan Carlin

"Crazy plants the seeds of calm, because wild times incentivize people to solve problems and stay alert, like a healthy dose of paranoia." - Morgan Housel

"Show me a man who thinks he's objective and I'll show you a man who's deceiving himself." - Henry Luce

Archduke Franz Ferdinand

On this date in 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip. The murders sparked World War I.

Dan Carlin has an excellent in depth (and I mean in depth) podcast on the events surrounding the assassination in his Blueprint for Armageddon. Well worth the listen.

If your tastes run more towards video rather than audio check out the Great War on YouTube.

Both are great sources of history.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I'm really happy the Patriots signed Darrelle Revis. Some are curious if his deal precludes New England from using the franchise tag on him next year. I'm curious if Bill Belichick will also use him as an extra receiver (like a reverse Troy Brown)... I'm starting to understand why some people are afraid of clowns... Put me in the camp of people who think the Boston Celtics having special St. Patrick's Day uniforms as a dumb idea. They're the Boston CELTICS!!... Interesting - did climate change allow Genghis Khan to invade with such success? Wonder what Dan Carlin thinks of this?... Heh heh - the Germans play Monopoly... How is Jerry Sandusky not dead in jail by now?... I laughed at the Obama Between Two Ferns interview but I agree that this Presidency and Between Two Ferns have officially jumped the shark... As a Boston fan I'm getting restless. It has been way too many months since our last championship... If I knew then what I know now I would have bought all the lawn darts I could before they became illegal and I would give the Jarts as a semi-joke gift every Christmas to friends who have pre-teen boys...  Interesting - a possible explanation for what happened to flight MH370... Patrick Laverty made a great point. The Florida Marlins complained that the Red Sox failed to field a major league team last time they played but the Marlins still LOST that game! What does that say about the Marlins...  RIP American hero and Band of Brothers icon Wild Bill Guarnere...
