Columbus Day continuing to be a federal holiday also continues to be a divisive issue in some places. On one side you have people who say Columbus was a genocidal imperialist monster and on the other proud Italian-Americans and traditionalists. I have a modest proposal with a solution which I think may be acceptable to most Americans.
About this time of year on October 19, 1781 the British forces under Lord Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington at Yorktown to end the Revolutionary War. America as a free nation really starts with this date. Why not celebrate the date as the new national holiday in replacement of Columbus Day? Yorktown Day could be celebrated on the third Monday in October. The unions would be satisfied since they wouldn't be losing a paid holiday. Italian-Americans couldn't complain since this in no way would be disrespecting Columbus and historically Yorktown is the more important date (beside Columbus really "discovered" the Caribbean not North America). French-Americans would be big supporters of the switch because the French fleet played a huge role in the victory. The only people who might complain are the people who are against glorifying anything that's even remotely militarily related but screw those people.More stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought Id share.
- Daniele Bolelli on George Washington's Warning. The only thing worse than a two-party system is a one party one though.

Glenn Reynolds points out that it's not just Russia - American has a problem speaking truth to power too. Media and high tech censor apparatchiks are major problems in our country
Reminded of the George Washington quote, "If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter."

George Washington once advised Congress to establish a number of public distilleries to ensure a reliable supply of rum for the US Army. All subsequent "infrastructure" proposals have paled in comparison... Not sure about you but the images in my head by a movie called Jungle Cruise to me generates pictures of something like The African Queen but I think Disney may have found basing a summer tent movie in Africa "problematic." So the movie is based in the Amazon instead.. Beowulf 2024: He never killed his friends when he was drunk... Do people realize that the average life-expectancy in the entire world in 1800 was just 29-years old? We live in the greatest time in history but people don't seem to appreciate it... Casually Opaque would be a good name for a band (or a name for a blog)...

This article on what benefits Presidents get after they leave office reminded me that a significant political rift has existed in this country for a long time. President Eisenhower signed the Former Presidents Act mainly to help out Harry Truman who was financially struggling because he refused to cash in for simply being President. This dynamic is interesting because Eisenhower famously refused to enter the White House on Inauguration Day until Harry and Bess Truman had left. No handshake - no nothing.. Interesting bit of history of why there's 60 seconds in a minute and 360 degrees in a circle... Another example of the political rift was when Chuck Yeager visited the White House after breaking the sound barrier - Yeager's father refused to shake Truman's hand because Truman was a Democrat and Yeager's dad was a staunch Republican... Wish I had bet on Alex Cora being named the new Red Sox manager after his one-year suspension. It was the easiest prediction I've made in quite some time... Civil Wart would be a good name for a band... George Washington wasn't perfect. He didn't like whiskey...
