Quotes for Today

Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"There are few cheerier things than buying a bunch of used books and taking them to a cafe to read." - Paul Graham

"The most luxurious possession, the richest treasure anybody has, is his personal dignity." - Jackie Robinson

"The people with the weakest opinions need the most censorship to keep their worldview intact. Social media protects the weakest opinions until that's the only kind there are." - Scott Adams

"You cannot truly listen to anyone and do anything else at the same time." - M. Scott Peck

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

If President Trump replaces Mike Pence on the 2020 ticket with Nikki Haley he would almost all but guarantee re-election... Complaining is not a strategy... The hospital in the Harry Potter books was called Saint Mungo's. Did you know there was an actual Saint Mungo? He's the patron saint of Glasgow, Scotland... Never thought about it this way... A life without meaning is like a foot without a big toe. And Tom Brady is always going to be here to be that big toe for us. I think we owe a big round of applause for our newest, bestest buddy and big toe - Tom Brady... An oldie but still makes me chuckle... One Jackie Robinson nugget to keep in the back of your head - when Jackie Robinson was first on the Hall of  Fame ballot 22% of the BBWAA did not vote for him...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Don't want to comment on DeflateGate or listen to the pablum on sports talk radio. It all makes me ill.. Heh heh... The reason pay phones still exist is so people can use them to call people they don't like in the middle of the night just to wake them up anonymously... Classy move by the Reds... Another year and once again People Magazine has passed me by as their pick as The Sexiest Man Alive. One day they will learn the error of their ways... 10 things you might not know about Life Savers... If the Patriots don't pick a QB in the draft as insurance for Brady's 4-game suspension - I wouldn't be surprised if they brought Tim Tebow into camp. No - I am not kidding about this... Interesting - did the legendary embrace of Jackie Robinson by Pee Wee Reese ever actually happen?... So Mark Cuban says that Russell Westbrook is not a "superstar". Didn't he say the same thing about Steve Nash? How did that work out for Cuban?... Cool technology - replace your electrical outlets with a dual USB charger...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Will the phrase "Physically or emotionally into the game" become to Bobby Valentine what the phrase "pumped and jacked" became for Pete Carroll in New England?... Awesome...  Heh heh - some UMass fans are glad Boston College doesn't want to play them. They were tired of BC dragging down their strength of schedule and RPI scores...  It doesn't matter what the menu says - Kobe beef is not served in the US... Am I the only one who keeps forgetting that Ron Paul is still in the Presidential race?... The Science Channel now airs TED Talks. That is fantastic... One Jackie Robinson Day nugget to keep in the back of your mind - when Jackie was first on the Hall of Fame Ballot 22% of the BBWAA did not vote for him... I miss 70's beer ads like this...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

On one hand you have to feel for Patriots back-up QB Matt Cassel because he's always a bridesmaid and never a bride. Cassel was a back-up in college (at USC to Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart) and now he's a back-up to Tom Brady. You know the guy wants a shot to show people what he can do. On the other hand - being back-up to Tom Brady has to be a great gig to have... Today would have been Jackie Robinson's 89th birthday... Plaxico Burress's prediction of a 23-17 Giants victory will help the Patriots in a subtle way. I'm thinking that the Patriots will make it a point to bump, push, and shove Burress at every opportunity. This extra contact could wear down the receiver just enough so that he's slow on a route or maybe drops a pass. The refs will probably let the Patriots get away with a little extra because subconsciously they might think that Burress brought it on himself... Today is Nolan Ryan's 61st birthday.. Professional back-up Matt Cassel should take comfort in having a better pro career than Heisman Trophy winners Danny Wuerffel - 1996, Chris Weinke - 2000 (who holds the NFL record for most consecutive losses by a quarterback in a season at 14), Eric Crouch - 2001 and Jason White - 2003 (who never even got a regular season snap in the NFL)... I played cards last night and a guy at my table saw the Georgetown / St. John's halftime score and said "Wow - St. John's is getting beat 41-14." Another guy at the table asked, "Is that a women's game?" The first guy then shouted over to a friend at the next table, "Hey Joe - did you see the St. John's score? They're getting beat 41-14." A guy at the second table asked, "Is that a women's game?" The final score ended up being 74-42. St. John's should have kept Kevin Clark as coach.

Top 5 - Baseball Players from Georgia

Here are who I consider the top 5 baseball players born in Georgia.

1. Ty Cobb - love him or hate him - he was one of the greatest players of all-time
2. Jackie Robinson - do I have to explain?
3. Frank Thomas - certain to be a Hall of Famer. 508 HR and climbing
4. Bill Terry - Hall of Fame 1st baseman
5. Moises Alou - 6-time All-Star

I could have picked pitchers Kevin Brown or Kenny Rogers for the 5th spot but both those guys are jerks.

File this under "You Learn Something New Every Day" - there really was a Crash Davis but he wasn't a catcher.
