Linky Links

Some stuff I found interesting and thought I'd share:

- The blizzard fridge

- Tweet of the Day - from @JimGaffigan:
The Hummer limo is really the douche bag chariot.

- Behold the power of gravity!

- Idiot Cuts Electric Cord with Scissors

- Jimmy Johnson used to compete at the highest levels of college and pro football. Now he's competing with Smiling Bob "the big wood". This is both sad and funny at the same time.

- Tweet of the Day (Part 2) - from @BorowitzReport:
Rielle Hunter believes that someday she & John Edwards will "be together." She's right, if she means in Hell.

- Verlander deal makes Lester a steal. Kudos to the Red Sox for their forethought in signing Jon Lester when they did.

Life Imitates Men in Black

Many people are commenting about how traditional media went into a partisan tank for John Edwards regarding his "love child" story. The National Enquirer had the story while traditional "old media" giants like The New York Times sat on their hands. The movie Men In Black had the truth back in 1997 (quotes via IMDB.com):
[after telling Jay that they're going to check the "hot sheets," Kay pulls up to a newsstand and buys a pile of supermarket tabloids]
Jay: *These* are the hot sheets?
Kay: Best investigative reporting on the planet. But go ahead, read the New York Times if you want. They get lucky sometimes.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Jay Gibbons was released by the Orioles even though he was still owed $11.9 million. My initial though was "I guess the Orioles thought he was worth the money when he was on the juice but now that he's off it - not so much." Most times you should go with your first gut feeling. I would have to do the math but I think that the Orioles may actually end up paying as much to players who won't suit up for Baltimore this season than Tampa Bay will pay in total payroll... Remember yesterday how I said John Edwards may be angling for the VP slot with his 26 committed delegates as bait? Well read this article and tell me you don't come away thinking the same thing... Michael Gee has an excellent look at Bill Belichick's relationship to the Boston media. Well worth the read.... I haven't seen the History Channel's new show Ax Men but every time I see a commercial for the show I think of John Steinbeck's quote about lumberjacks: "Years ago when I used to work in the woods it was said of lumber men that they did their logging in the whore house and their sex in the woods." That quote has always just stuck with me.

The Democratic Convention

Karl Rove has an excellent look at what may happen at the Democratic convention and what steps the eventual winner should be taking.

One point I found interesting is the fact that John Edwards still has 26 delegates committed to him and those delegates could just prove decisive. It is possible that the price of those delegates may be Edwards inclusion on the ticket as VP. This could win the battle for the Democratic nominee but lose the war. Edwards is not looked on favorably by too many people. He is viewed as a phony ambulance chasing lawyer.

If Edwards is the VP choice then John McCain is a lock to win.

Presidential Election Odds - Democrats

It should be no surprise that (according to Bodog.com) Hillary Clinton is currently the prohibitive favorite to win the Democratic Presidential nomination.
Hillary Clinton 1/6
Barack Obama 12/5
Al Gore 5/1
John Edwards 8/1
Dennis Kucinich 20/1
Joe Biden 30/1
Hillary is the big favorite but Barack is within striking distance and interestingly (or more accurately - alarmingly) John Edwards' promises of seizing powers Hugo Chavez style are improving his chances.

Personally I'm amused that the "serious" Joe Biden is given less chance than "tinfoil hat" Dennis Kucinich. I attribute that more to the relative hotness of Kucinich's wife but also to the relative blandness of Biden in general.

A Question

It just occurred to me that John Edwards and Larry Craig served in the US Senate at the same time. While they were in the Senate together - I wonder if John Edwards was ever nervous that Larry Craig was going to try and "snake" him?

Someone should ask Edwards this question out on the campaign trail.

WSOP, POB and John Edwards Getting Snaked By a Gay Man

I've been meaning to remind people that now that the World series of Poker has begun (I think they are on the 4th event) and that THE best place for WSOP info and stories is over at the Tao of Poker. Nobody does poker better than Dr. Pauly.

I was reminded to post my reminder by a post over at Steve Silver's blog. No Steve was not posting about poker - he was posting about John Edwards almost getting "snaked" by a gay man. Now I'm not up on my gay terms - so I just assumed the gay guy wanted to do something to Edwards with his "snake".

This in turn made me think of the term POB (penis on back) which is not a gay term but in fact a poker related term. This made me think of Dr. Pauly and that's what prompted my reminder to check the Tao of Poker for all your WSOP updates.

If you aren't familiar with the term "POB" - read this post about the infamous Captain Tom and his wayward penis.
