Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Life Lessons from a Board Game. Learn something every day - the name of the person in Operation is Cavity Sam.

- The Lesson from Murder's Row, Two Layers Deeper. A lesson from WW II we need to relearn today.

- Jonathan Turley: Yale Medical school accused of racial discrimination in admissions. This is my shocked face.

- Massachusetts demonstrates the futility of gun control.  And yes Mass is run mostly by dumbasses.

More Linky Links

More stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Interesting - the evolution of the modern chicken. Who knew crocodiles were related to chickens?

- Jonathan Turley: Brown threatens student journalist. While sympathetic with Brown to a degree - wouldn't the student also be covered by whistleblower laws?

- As a Mass taxpayer - I didn't vote for this.

- NFL 5th year options tracker for 2022 1st round draft picks. What will New England do with Cole Strange?

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- US GDP by State. I'm competitive and want Mass to catch and pass NJ. On the bright side - our GDP is higher than Sweden's.

Midnight Run turned 35-years old this week. Never realized that Danny Elfman wrote the music for the film.

- This was a very sad night for me. Still is.

- Jonathan Turley on the attempt to censor Jason Aldean and his video Try That in a Small Town. Amused he mentions CMT maybe becoming the next Bud Light (although he doesn't call the Streisand Effect by name). Just an example of minds thinking alike.

Animal Rights Laws

Reason has a brief article on Animal Rights Laws in CA and Mass. I was unaware of both of these laws.

In Mass people travel to NH to get menthol cigarettes (they were outlawed in Mass) and people in RI go over the border to Mass to buy legal weed. Now people from Mass may have to go to either of those states to get an omelet.  What a crazy way to do interstate commerce.

California and Legal Weed

California legalized weed five-years ago. Why is the illicia market still thriving? The short answer is because politicians and bureaucrats in California could screw up a wet dream.

In Massachusetts legalized marijuana seems to be working out fine. In Worcester pot dispensaries are as common as liquor stares (aka "packies") with each dispensary paying a pretty good amount in new taxes that would not have existed prior to legalization. And prices still seem reasonable plus a ton of new jobs have been created. Would be interesting to see what the unemployment numbers would look like in Mass if you took away the pot related jobs.

Mass also allows the growing of six plants per adult for personal use. This has created a literal home-grown market for individuals to make a little side money clipping buds off their well-cared for personal plants. This has become a big hobby for many and their dedication to the craft is admirable. I'd bet that organized crime in Mass has gotten out of  or greatly reduced their role in selling illegal weed in the State.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Theory I've heard a few times now - Governor Charlie Baker is waiting to fully open up Massachusetts until after Saint Patrick's Day because he doesn't want to risk drunken idiot super spreader events. My theory is Charlie Baker is waiting to open up the State because he doesn't own testicles... Andrew Cuomo's Covid-19 policies of putting infected people in nursing homes may have killed 5-times or more people than the number who died in the Twin Towers on September 11th. How is this not a bigger scandal?... For all the angst on the Left about orange man bad Donald Trump - you never hear anyone pining for Hillary Clinton do you? No "Hillary would have done this" or "Hillary would have done that." Isn't that weird? Or very telling?... Phrase of the day, "Drinking with Godot" - drinking while waiting for friends who may or may not arrive... Do you remember back in July when Andrew Cuomo said, "We now have people coming to New York, fleeing other states because it's the 'safe' state." Do you remember that? I do...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

With Rhode Island changing the State's official name because of perceived connotations of "Providence Plantations" - should Mass change their official name from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to the Republic of Massachusetts to avoid any perceived socialist connotations? One can only hope... Always remember, "Journalists aren't neutral - they're the cavalry in the culture wars." - Naval Ravikant... I think one of the reasons that statues haven't really come under attack in Massachusetts is because history is a big tourist attraction here (Freedom Trail, etc.). And the local politicians know that... "In order for men to do great evil, they must first believe they are doing good." - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn... Neural Darwinism can be cured by taking long walks. So many smart people throughout history made taking long walks a part of their daily routine. This was just a fancy way of saying long walks (especially in nature) help keep your brain fresh and active...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Keep seeing that Elizabeth Warren came in third in her "home state." Let's be clear - Warren is not from Massachusetts. She's a carpetbagging Harvard professor... If science showed that one of the side effects of the corona virus was penis enlargement - what percentage of men do you think would be willing to purposefully risk infection?... I think a one-man show of Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea starring Erik Estrada would be so bad its good in a Springtime for Hitler type way... "In America, the young are always ready to give to those who are older than themselves the full benefits of their inexperience." Oscar Wilde in 1887 explaining Bernie Sanders popularity with the American youth of 2020... Just a reminder - we know exactly who President Obama picked each year in his NCAA March Madness pools we still don't know where he was the night our embassy in Benghazi was attacked...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Reminder "Joe Biden" is an anagram for "I Need Job"... Heh heh - very clever... For what it's worth I know multiple groups of guys who car pooled from Massachusetts to attend the Trump rally in Manchester, NH. I'm starting to think that Trump may carry liberal Mass in the general election... "Facts don't cease to exist because they are ignored." - Aldous Huxley... The Mookie Betts trade is giving me flashbacks to when the Bruins traded Joe Thornton who went on to win the NHL MVP award that season. Like the Betts trade the Bruins got back three prospects for Thornton. None of them really panned out and now Joe Thornton will go into the Hall of Fame as a member of the San Jose Sharks... Birds of Prey is flopping at the box office. Is it because it's a "woke" feminist vehicle? Is it because there's no Joker in the movie (which is in no way chauvinistic - it's just that Harley Quinn is joined at the hip with Joker in the DC Comic universe)? The movie has an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score so it's not a bad movie. Is it because this isn't the DC universe movie that James Gunn is directing (that would be next year's The Suicide Squad)? Not sure the reason but I'm in no hurry to see the flick. Based on the box office I guess I'm not alone...

Saying What You Believe.

I'm highly amused by this stunt. Bravo to whoever thought it up.

Even funnier are the people who try to explain why the sign may be offensive to them. Without their "woke" talking points many in Bluest Blue Massachusetts are left confused about what they believe and what they can say.

I can easily say that the Catholic Church is wrong about birth control and same-sex marriage. See nothing difficult about that. Doesn't make me anti-Catholic.

But then again I think for myself. And have no problem stating publicly what I believe. Islam is wrong about women - see not that freaking hard to say.

That task seems much more difficult for those who can't or won't think for themselves.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

If Justin Beiber made a Christmas album - I'd give it as a gift to people I hate... Murphy Brown reboot cancelled after historically low ratings. Who could have seen this coming?... Confession: I have never seen the movie A Christmas Story. Have no plans to see it this year either... "A hero is one who knows how to hang on one minute longer" - Novalis... Not sure if this was just a Massachusetts saying but when I was a kid "book it" meant to run away as in, "the cops are here - book it!" Because kids in Mass naturally run away from books maybe?... Heh Heh... Speaking of Massachusetts things - I think Hollywood should remake a bunch of John Wayne movies but with a Mike Dukakis look-alike in the lead. I would definitely pay to see The Quiet Dukakis or She Wore a Yellow Dukakis...

4. The Verdict
5. (tie) The Departed (tie) The Town

The Paper Chase, The Boondock Saints, The Perfect Storm, The Brinks Job and The Last Hurrah almost made the list but I gave no consideration to Love Story. A lot of good movies based in the Bay State.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The best Twitter reactions to Joe Biden not running for President... If  you polled Star Wars geeks waiting in line for the new movie - how many would be able to tell you exactly what NASA stands for? Greater then 50% or less than 50%?... Heh heh... OK I'll say it! Those Louisville dancers / whores really weren't that great looking! No wonder Kentucky has been beating the Cardinals in recruiting... For Massachusetts residents looking to honor veterans this November... BTW - NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration (but you knew that didn't you)... Heh heh... OK I'll say it! I feel bad for the ESPN employees who have been let go but I'm disappointed the layoffs didn't include any on-air "talent"! There are quite a few I was hoping I'd never have to watch again... What will be the larger amount - the amount the NFL ends up fining Cam Heywood for honoring his dad who died of cancer or the amount the NFL will actually donate to cancer charities via their Pink October BS?...

Top 5 - Movies Based in Massachusetts

1. JAWS
2. Good Will Hunting
3. The Departed
4. The Thomas Crown Affair (w/ Steve McQueen)
5. The Verdict

Just missing the cut were The Paper Chase, The Boondock Saints, The Perfect Storm, The Brinks Job and The Last Hurrah. I gave no consideration whatsoever to Love Story. It will be interesting to see if Black Mass (the Whitey Bulger biopic) makes the list.
