Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

If he were still playing - would Tony Romo be one of the top 15 QB's in the NFL? Seeing some of the people starting these days - I'd have to say YES... I admit to being bothered by the election results in Vermont. Kanye West only got 1,269 votes (0.34% of the total) while white write ins received 1,942 votes (0.53% of the total). Clearly the only explanation is that Vermont is racist!... Who will be our Moses who stands up to the petty tyrants and says, "Let my people go (out to dinner and maybe see a movie)"... Have you seen that commercial about the couple chasing their runaway dog in the rain in their car? Yeah - those people shouldn't have a dog. They really shouldn't have a kid either... There's an outside chance that Tom Brady could lead the NFL in either passing yards or passing TD's - he's currently 4th in both categories. Equally intriguing is the chance that new Patriots QB Cam Newton could lead the NFL in rushing TD's (he's currently tied for 3rd) despite missing time this season due to a positive COVID-19 test...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I did not watch a single second of last night's Gonzaga/UNC game. Looks like I didn't miss much... Heh heh... I don't know how Tony Romo will do as a football announcer but I do know he has to be better than Phil Simms... Doesn't seem right but it is true... It needs to be asked - are the Harlem Globetrotters the best professional basketball team in NYC right now? Looking at you Knicks and Nets... I think one of the reasons I did not watch the game last night is because neither Gonzaga nor UNC covered the spread when I bet on them Saturday. Screw those guys...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Just saying but the cure to the common cold and the answer to who let the dogs out are the two most enduring mysteries of our age... The great Sally Jenkins on DeflateGate II... I can't wait for Donald trump to name the Iron Sheik ambassador to Iran. It will break the Internet... A reminder of what Goodell said about deflated balls... There's a niche available for a magazine covering cool stuff and technology now that Boing Boing has abandoned those subjects in favor of Trump Derangement Syndrome... Thanks Obama!... Joe Biden just raised his speaking fees by 200% by intimating he'd run for President in 2020... I'm calling it right now - Tony Romo is the starting QB for the Miami Dolphins next season...

- Heh heh - good question.

- Theranos is to the medical device companies what Enron was to energy companies and Theranos fraud was basically exposed by one man.

- Heh heh

- I think Tony Romo is nothing but class but this made me chuckle.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- The NHL and the Dallas Stars get it. The NFL prevented the Cowboys from wearing similar stickers honoring the fallen police officers.

EDIT: The NFL might not get it but Bill Belichick certainly does.

- 69-years ago today. Here's the recreation of Yeager breaking the sound barrier from The Right Stuff

- Holy crap. I'm a bad person for laughing at this but I keep picturing Tony Romo's reaction innocently opening an attachment from a couple of "fans".

- A day late but Happy 241st birthday to the US Navy

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Weird stat - Tony Romo is 21-3 as a starting QB in the month of November. Too bad playoffs are not played before Thanksgiving... I see wild turkeys all the time. I had no idea that they were re-introduced to Massachusetts after I was born... Notre Dame haters will point out that Brian Kelley is lucky he inherited Charlie Weiss' decided schematic advantage on defense... Speaking of the big Notre Dame / USC game - has any other team started as a pre-season number 1 in the polls only to finished unranked? USC looks like they are about to accomplish this dubious feat... Would Reach-Around Elmo be a good fantasy football or band name?... Who knew? There are 293 different ways to make change for a dollar... Fact that really makes you think. Every human originally spent about half an hour as a single cell. If you murder that single cell - do you murder the human?...

Football Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous football thoughts and observations.

OK - I'll say it. The Patriots are not a Super Bowl team with Matt Cassel at quarterback and for the long run they are better off missing the playoffs this year. To some that seems like an obvious statement but others have had their reason clouded by a couple of 400-yard passing days by Cassel. I'm not down on Cassel because of yesterday's performance - it's just the way it is. Tom Brady does make this team a Super Bowl contender (if not favorite) and a higher draft pick this year in the long run is more beneficial than making the playoffs this season... The Patriots are a completely different team with Tom Brady at QB. Same too the Cowboys with and without Tony Romo. I just wanted to mention that I first heard of Romo when he was at Eastern Illinois where he won the Walter Payton Award his senior year (2002). I say this because Dominic Randolph of Holy Cross could very well be the next Tony Romo. Randolph is one of the 16 finalists for the Walter Payton Award this season. I've been on the Randolph bandwagon for a long time. Remember where you first heard his name when he gets drafted by an NFL team this spring... I can easily see the Eagles dumping both Coach Andy Reid and QB Donovan McNabb and replacing them with Patriots' Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels and free agent QB Matt Cassel. Reid and McNabb have brought that team as far as they can and everything else is going to be downhill. McDaniels and Cassel would bring a fresh energy to the team and the fanbase. I think Philadelphia would be a Super Bowl contender with the new duo. They have a better overall team than New England. They have a better defense and they have Brian Westbrook (Walter Payton Award winner in 2001). Romeo Crennel may also be available to be McDaniels' Defensive Coordinator at the end of the year. Tell me Philly fans wouldn't get excited about those changes?... Remind me not to bet on a game where either the Denver Broncos or New York Jets are involved. You never know what team will show up... Plaxico Burress has played his last game for the New York Jets. Maybe the strict Catholic Tom Coughlin had his prayers answered? "Dear God - can you please do something about Plaxico Burress? I don't want him hurt bad but I would really appreciate it if you could get him out of my life."

NFL Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous NFL thoughts and observations.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rested their starters the last game of the season and now they are out of the playoffs. The Giants played the last game as good as they could with all top players playing and they will be in the NFC Championship. The Colts rested their players the last game of the season and now they are making tee times. The Patriots played all of their starters in the last game of the season and now they will be hosting the AFC Championship game. Yet next year some "experts" will be suggesting teams rest their players the final game of the year instead of staying sharp... Don Banks says that Sunday's biggest winner was the Patriots. Now the Pats get the banged up Chargers instead of the Colts. Sunday's biggest winner is actually the Packers since now they get to host the NFC Championship game instead of having to go to Dallas - a place where Brett Favre never wins. I don't even know how you could argue otherwise... Tony Romo now has two postseason strikes against him. One more first-round loss next season and he automatically becomes the NFL's Alex Rodriguez - a player who puts up great regular season stats but who comes up short in the playoffs and who fans have turned against because he's got a big contract and is just too perfect. Dallas fans will give him one more strike otherwise Romo's new nickname will be Mr. October... In my head I heard Suzy Waldman screeching at the the end of the Dallas / Giants game; "Of all the dramatic things that I've seen. Tony Romo's just thrown an interception."...

Belichick You Magnificent Bastard!

Jim Nance (actual pre-game question to Tony Romo): Did you prepare for this [game] by reading some of his [Bill Belichick's] books?

Tony Romo (the answer I wished he gave): Who am I? Patton? Belichick you magnificent bastard! I read your book!

Tony Romo
(actual answer): I didn't go out and get them this week or anything. But just in the past, I wanted to read about great coaches. I think he tries to think like the quarterback thinks. I think he wants to say, what does this quarterback do to allow himself to have success? If this quarterback has tendencies to do this or this, he'll try to take those away.

Wade Phillips to Coach Cowboys

The news that Wade Phillips will be the next coach of the Dallas Cowboys has been met with cynicism that Phillips is just a placeholder for a year until someone better is available. For me the first thought I had upon learning Phillips would be the next coach was that the comparisons of Tony Romo to Rob Johnson will be unavoidable now.

Others have speculated that Terrell Owens will run roughshod over the team now that a "players" coach has been hired.

My prediction is that the Cowboys will have a fine season and will make the playoffs. They may even win the NFC East. However, they will lose in the first round of the playoffs but the loss will be blamed on injuries and a bad match-up. The sentiment that comes with success will be strong enough that Phillips will be back for his second year. Meanwhile Bill Cowher and the other top choices next year will find jobs and the Cowboys will be looking at the same usual suspects when Phillips flops in year two.
