Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Is it bad that I want this gun?

- Cool list - the 10 best boxing matches from recent history. Some of these fights I haven't seen (yet).

- Profile of the Trevor Bauer situation. Will be interesting to see what Bauer does next and have to say that Padres pitcher Jacob Nix doesn't come off too well here.

- Tucker Carlson Episode 28. He takes on the "trans industry." Follow the money!

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Not to be mean but some people would be better off continuing to wear masks. Funny enough many of these people also have coexist bumper stickers... Have long held that one of the first steps boxing should take to try and regain relevance is move from being a Summer Olympics sport to a Winter Olympics sport. There's no reason the bouts can't happen during the winter and they would get much more attention as one of the few events that can be scheduled at night. This will help with name recognition for the fighters and maybe get more interest generated in these athletes for when they turn professional... For whatever reason the past few weeks I've heard KISS's Ace Frehley's Back In the New York Groove like a dozen times after not hearing it for years...  At Harvey Weinstein's funeral I wonder how many of his victims will show up just to make sure he's dead or to get a small modicum of justice...

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Feds deny Minnesota aid request. If you take a crap in your own bed you shouldn't expect someone else to have to buy you a new mattress.

- Coronavirus: Why everyone was wrong. Very interesting points.

- Heh Heh

- Another example of why the Patriots are the Patriots.

- Nice appreciation of Marvin Hagler who I agree is the best middleweight of all-time.

- Under the radar but Iran seems to be suffering from an "epidemic of accidents" but strangely all the accidents seem to be place the Mossad would mark as targets.

Ronda Rousey vs Floyd Mayweather

The day after the Manny Pacquiao - Floyd Mayweather fight I said that the UFC should have Ronda Rousey challenge Mayweather to a $100 million winner-take-all fight. Mayweather would have to either refuse or no-comment the offer which would make him look afraid of a woman and make boxing look like a joke. Nothing but upside for the UFC though.

Now that Ronda Rousey is saying that she could beat Mayweather in a "fight" - could this actually be something that could come to fruition? If it did - I'd pay money to watch it and so would millions of others. It would be by far the biggest pay-per-view event in history!

But it won't happen.

It won't happen because Mayweather could lose. That would be the end of Mayweather and the final nail in the coffin for boxing. No matter what the potential payday - the risk is too great.

Too bad because I would have put my money on Rousey.

The Night the Fix was In

Interesting look at the Mike Tyson - Peter McNeeley fight.

Did McNeeley's manager throw in the towel because he had a $1 million prop bet? Sounds like he did.

Don King

Excellent article on Don King who was once one of the most powerful men in sports but is now all but forgotten.

When's the last time you thought about Don King? When's the last time you thought about boxing? I've become ambivalent about both. I always thought boxing was crooked - not so much what happened in the ring but outside - from the promoters like King keeping certain fights from happening to judges ringside giving scorecards which were indefensible to anyone who watched the same fight. Now I don't really think of boxing - or Don King - at all.

The article was a good reminder of what once was. I couldn't help but wonder if we are better off without boxing and people like Don King?

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Watched the Pacquiao-Marquez fight while at a poker game. Everyone who had money on the fight (including me) thought Marquez was going to win this time... On this day in history in 1941 - Bob Feller becomes the first major league baseball player to enlist after Pearl Harbor. More than anything that he did on the field - it was this act that Ted Williams always associated most with Feller (and perhaps the thing he was most jealous of)... Interesting look back at The Sopranos by Alan Sepinwall. Put me in the camp who is more curious about what happened to the Russian that whether Tony lived or died at the end... When Marquez knocked out Pacquiao some at the poker table thought he might be dead. Seriously... Ken Levine decodes Hollywood-speak... Hipsters may think they invented snark but that was the name of author Jack London's sailboat over a hundred years ago...Oyster Pirates would be a good name for a band...

Olympic Boxing

There is very little enthusiasm for Olympic boxing anymore. I think there is a simple solution to help stem or reverse this lack of enthusiasm. Move boxing from the Summer Olympics to the Winter Olympics.

There is no reason boxing has to be part of the Summer Games. It's an indoor sport that can be held any time. If it is during the Summer it has to compete with swimming, track and field, gymnastics and lots of other sports. It were held during the Winter Games it would be a much bigger focus of attention - especially for the first few games where the change would be treated as a major story.

A simple solution . I can think of any reasons why this wouldn't work.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

There should be outrage at the Pacquiao decision but should there be any surprise? It is also funny listening to people on sports talk radio talk about the situation who did not even watch the fight (and no I did not watch the fight either).... Interesting common sense approach to business problems - The 5 Whys. I'm going to try to incorporate this approach into my every day life... The movie Heat would have been much more interesting if Al Pacino hunted Robert DeNiro with just a bow and arrow... My favorite moment of the Belmont was seeing Bob Costas interview jockey Johnny Velazquez. They were eye-to-eye. Man is Bob Costas short... Johnny Damon may not get to 3,000 hits but he already has more total bases than Wade Boggs - 4174 to 4064...
