Godel, Escher, Bach

Just started the book Godel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter. A book which has long sat on my books to read pile but honestly I was a bit intimidated by it.

GEB is nominally a book about a mathematician, an artist, and a musician but as the author writes in the 20-year anniversary edition, "In a word GEB is a very personal attempt to say how it is that animate beings can come out of inanimate matter." Or to the point, "I have tried to weave an Eternal Golden Braid out of these three strands: Godel, Escher, Bach."

The book is structured in an unusual way: as counterpoint between Dialogues and Chapters. Math is hard enough but this structure tends to lessen the burden. I'm resigned to not fully understanding the math in my first reading. The book is essentially about "Strange Loops" with perhaps the most pressing today being can intelligent behavior be programmed? The author puts forth that this seeming contradiction is no contradiction at all. I guess we'll see.

The book has been called the bible of artificial intelligence since it first came out who's to argue.

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Mississippi eliminates income tax. This is the way!

- VDH: From profanity-chic to terrorist-porn.

- I actually never realize Jonathon Turley was once a Democrat. This new shift is turning a lot of people away. (HT Cultural Offering)

- The stress-energy tensor explained. I've read-read it but still don't fully comprehend but that's OK - it makes watching an ocean wave all the more miraculous when you realize how difficult it is just to describe a single molecule of water - never mind the entire wave. EDIT: Part II has been published. BTW - like the term "potential energy field" instead of spacetime.

Linly Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- The Jokes Liberals Used to Make. Proof of the facts that celebrities should never read the comments and if you try to go woke there's no lengths you can go to please some people.

- I want to take this class.

- The utility of math. Hope this link works. Fan of math (not very good at it but wanting to be better).

- Argument that DOGE is good but not good enough. I argue that DOGE is a great start. A good plan executed today is always better than a perfect plan executed sometime in the future.

More Linky Links

More stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Reconsidering the spiral. Its given me some new thoughts.

- Hamas achieves Pyrrhic victory with ceasefire agreement. I can see why Israel would release the 1,300 terrorists with the thought "we caught them once - we'll catch or kill them again."

- David Lynch dead at 78-years old. I thought the director was timeless and would live forever. Still not a fan of Eraserhead.

- Sadly also passing is Bob Uecker aged 90. Another one I though would live forever.

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Why some US Border Agents are contemplating suicide. Heartbreaking to this think this crisis is happening on purpose. If you are a single issue voter - this is your single issue.

- Michael Cohen's credibility takes a big hit. So when does Red Finch sue him to recover stolen funds?

- 10! is the precise number of seconds in 42 days (! is the factorial)

- Seems about right
