Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Can you launch a paper airplane from space that won't burn up on re-entry?

Adam Vinatieri - WTF? We've all seen linemen who slimmed way down after retiring. Who knew kickers bulked up like this after hanging up their cleats?

- Posted without comment

- Red Sox sign Raffy Devers to an 11-year $331 million contract. For many Boston fans though it is too little too late.

Haiti

I've long been fascinated by the differences between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

One of the most remarkable economic divergences in the world.

In 1950, Haiti was as rich as the Dominican Republic.

In 2018, Haiti was POORER than it was in 1950, while the D.R.'s GDP had increased by a factor of TEN.

These countries are two halves of the SAME ISLAND. - Noah Smith

Geography-wise Haiti and the D.R. are the combined size of Vermont and New Hampshire. Imagine if they spoke French and were so much poorer in Vermont while in New Hampshire they spoke Spanish and were doing much better financially than their neighbor to the west. That's Haiti and the D.R. in a nutshell.

Perhaps the fundamental cause for the differing financial fortunes is the fact that they play baseball in the D.R. and in Haiti they play soccer. One is a sport of individual achievement (just look at the stars like David Ortiz or Pedro Martinez) while the other is a sport of faking injury whenever anyone so much as touches you.

Perhaps all this woke crap and cancel culture in the US is due to the fact that we've started having our children play soccer. We should fundamentally return to baseball and tackle football for the good of the nation before it's too late. Just saying.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Interesting cautionary tale from a start-up software founder.

- Omega-3 supplements offer some significant benefits. I've been taking Omega-3 (Krill Oil) supplements for 2-months now and have no plans to stop.

- Glenn Greenwald: The Media Lied Repeatedly about Officer Brian Sicknick's Death. The media has no shame - and once again the NYT is front and center among the worst offenders.

- That was quick - proposed Super League collapses.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Am I wrong or is the new plan to pull the troops out of Afghanistan before the troops are pulled out of Washington DC? That's pretty messed up and it's like nobody's paying attention... The Great Barrington Declaration and Ad Hominem Augmentation. True - if they had a case to make they would instead they attack the signers... Remember a few years ago when Coors released a new drink - Coors Light Iced Tea but nobody in marketing thought through the acronym (CLIT)? "Hey guys let's go out and grab some CLIT" - you don't see that product advertised anymore (for some reason)... Unpopular Opinion: I see people talking about getting the vaccine and being relieved that they can now spend time with their family, friends and loved ones again. Truth is you could have been doing that all along... Not a soccer fan but I understand the outrage over the new proposed Super League. As a way to confront that threat to history and tradition I offer a simple recommendation: any player under contract to any team in the Super League would not be eligible for a World Cup roster. You could easily get Britain and Scotland to support such a measure and I'm guessing Spain and Germany would come on board as well. That would take the steam out of the Super League from the get go...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Not sure if there's any truth to the rumor that CNN has moved to using Chat Roulette as their internal video conference system of choice... Heh Heh... Recently re-watched Avengers: Endgame and now I can't stop wondering about how awesome Professor Hulk would be at golf. Bruce Banner would be able to instantly analyze the correct choice for the physics of any shot and the Hulk's strength would easily allow him to drive the green on any hole - even the longest of par five's. The PGA may have to make a ruling on this... No offense to soccer fans but I think the only way I'd find the sport interesting is if they used two balls at the same time... Think it would be cool if someone remade a video of the song What a Wonderful World  with images of the recent Middle East Peace deals...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

When I saw President Trump's tweet about LeBron James - my honest first thought was that Trump either consciously or unconsciously wants to be a one-term President... God help me but I laughed at this... If Donald Trump ever goes on trial for anything in his life one of the jury pool selection questions will now have to be "Are you a fan of LeBron James?" If the prospective juror says yes then they will be shown the door... Turns out that $32.6 TRILLION cost for Medicare for All over 10-years was a best case scenario. Anyone who argues for this has no idea how the world works... "God will not have his work made manifest by cowards." Ralph Waldo Emerson... For no reason I'm suddenly curious if a reggae version of The Band's Up On Cripple Creek exists... I'm curious how President Trump going after LeBron James polls in Miami and Ohio. Sure it will poll poorly in Akron but what about in Cleveland?...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I don't know anything about soccer but I do know class when I see it. This was 100% class... It still blows my mind that Ronald Reagan was the first choice to play Rick Blaine in the movie classic Casablanca... 15 secrets of commercial divers. I always wanted to be a commercial diver... 80% of all insects live in the jungle. Ergo I will never live in the jungle... I ALMOST do this all the time. It happens when you're not really paying attention on a call... Next season on Game of Thrones a great wizard and conjurer will be introduced. Some call him Tim... Heh Heh - very clever...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The first mission of the US Space Force should be to occupy the moon (just as foretold in the prophecies)... So woke it hurts (from laughing)... "Estimare" should be be a word for when an estimate goes way over budget and becomes a fiscal nightmare... Who knew? "Soccer" is actually the more authentic word to describe the sport... "If you have everything under control, you're not moving fast enough" - Mario Andretti... The world's poorest people are getting richer faster. "In 1820 94% of the world's population lived in extreme poverty. In in 1990 34.8%, and in 2015 just 9.6%." So historically things have never been better... Heh heh...

I hope to find something I enjoy as much as Rod Stewart enjoys drawing balls for soccer match-ups.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Heh heh - this reflects my attitude to US soccer and the World Cup almost exact. As an aside - 99% of the time you see the word "whinging" in print it seems to be in relation to soccer. That's an indictment all on its own.

- I was Tony Gwynn's bat boy

- Interesting - whatever happened to OJ Simpson's white Ford Bronco?

- Tim Duncan's greatness in historical perspective. (I guess they would need a whole second picture to show all the trophy's and awards Bill Russell won)

- Heh heh - speaking of Tim Duncan and the Spurs

- The Blackhawks (15/2) and the Bruins (8/1) are the opening line favorites to win next year's Stanley Cup

Soccer Match Fixing

Interesting look at how easy it was/is to fix World Cup exhibition games. Can't say I'm surprised. When you have an organization so obviously corrupt like FIFA - it is almost expected that the whole of the organization would be corrupt. As they say a fish stinks from the head down. Two years to even begin investigation allegations. No permanent suspensions or criminal charges in obviously fixed games. Way to go FIFA!

- In Canada's Dreams

- 5 Second Films are awesome!

- Very cool - dad waves kid goodbye on bus every morning dressed in different costume

- Pure badass - Nepalese soldier single-handedly kills 30+ Taliban fighters. Here's my question - he was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC) which is the second highest award for bravery. What the heck would he have had to do to get the highest honor (the Victorian Cross)?

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

On the bright side of the NFL lockout - this could be record Fall for apple orchard owners as men no longer have an excuse not to apple pick on Sundays... The rug really ties the whole picture together... During his speech at 1964 Democtratic National Convention - LBJ never once mentioned Vietnam... People love Christopher Walken for the More Cowbell sketch but the Colonel Angus skit makes me laugh just thinking about it... I'll steal the joke - Do you think the Players will hire the law firm of BenJarvus Green & Ellis for their antitrust suit?... Involuntary Collaborations - very cool... With the Red Sox ownership also owning Liverpool and the New England Patriots owners also owning the New England Revolution - I wonder if Liverpool and the New England Revolution ever have a home and home at Fenway and Foxboro?... Of the Congressmen to vote against the 1964 Civil Rights Act - 74% were Democrats... Just awesome... Did you know that Georgetown's blue and gray colors were chosen in 1876 to support “unity between the Northern and Southern boys of the College”... I was never bothered by the picture of Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam Hussein. If he shook hands with Dan Shaughnessey then that's another story... Both retired 4-years ago - I think Bernie Williams has a better chance of returning to baseball than Tiki Barber has returning to football

Qatar and the World Cup - the Day the US Stood Still

Honest to god - my first thought when I heard Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup was, "Gort! Qatar barada nikto!"

The correct pronunciation of Qatar falls between cutter and gutter, but not like guitar. Their oil and natural gas revenues have enabled Qatar to attain the second-highest per capita income in the world - only Luxembourg is higher. You can bet that some of that revenue went to "buying" the 2022 World Cup. Then throw into the mix that Qatar is slightly smaller than Connecticut.

So in short you have the 2022 World Cup going to a place that is smaller than Connecticut, is 95% sand, where a monarchic despot rules with a religious ban on alcohol and is a place that nobody is really sure how to pronounce.

Perfect!

On a serious note - it is probably a good thing the US didn't get the nod. These things are often more trouble then they are worth.
