How to change from a monthly to an annual 365 subsy

I received an email from Microsoft about changing to Microsoft 365 personal classic. It said that the classic plan was $129/yr. I was on an annual subscription with my previous plan running to July 2026. When changing plan, it is on a monthly subscription for $12/month. How do I change this? The Microsoft help systems have been sending me round in circles without giving me an answer to this issue

    Hi Lorraine,

    You can switch that Microsoft 365 Personal Classic from monthly to yearly right in your Services & subscriptions page.

    Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services with the same Microsoft account that shows the 12 USD per month plan. On the Microsoft 365 Personal Classic tile choose Manage. On the Manage page select Change or Switch next to Recurring billing, then pick Pay yearly and confirm.

    If you do not see the Switch option, first turn Recurring billing to On on that same page, refresh, and the Pay yearly choice should appear before you confirm the change. Microsoft will show the next charge date and the annual amount on screen before you accept, so you can verify it matches what you expect.

    If the Switch option is truly missing after that, tell me exactly what you see on the Manage page. In rare cases the plan was purchased through a mobile app store or a partner and the frequency has to be changed there, but I can guide you once I know the screen you are on.

    Got this today. Anyone who has already switched and had issues with the monthly/annual billing tried it?

    Hello

    The email instruction is very unclear. You actually need to cancel your current subscription, then subscribe to MS365 Personal Classic.

    Here is the instruction:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/switching-to-microsoft-365-personal-and-family-classic-plans-58342e83-38e7-4cda-b63b-88604a8fb7ef

    I quote the section relevant here:

    Downgrade to Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Family Classic

    Go to  Subscriptions  . Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your subscription, if prompted.

    Find your current subscription and select Manage > Cancel subscription

    To downgrade to another plan with fewer features, select Microsoft 365 Personal Classic or Microsoft 365 Family Classic, or another plan that works for you.

    Follow the instructions to complete the switch.

    Your existing subscription might not change immediately, but it will automatically switch to the new plan at renewal. You will not be charged for the new plan until it renews.

    ===========

    Very important, you need to keep auto-renewal on to keep the classic plan in the future. If it gets expired, and you want to get back on MS365 in the future, the classic plan will not be available.

    =============

    As the US market has already gone through this, I want to point out the highlighted section

    “Refund” might not be the right word here. After you cancel your current plan and sign up for the classic version, your existing plan will actually stay active until it expires. Then, instead of renewing at the higher non-classic rate, it will automatically transition to the classic plan you selected.
