Breaking News: Cindy Sheehan May Challenge Pelosi for House Seat

“Peace Mom” Cindy Sheehan, mother of slain soldier Casey Sheehan and one-time “face” of the U.S. anti-war movement, is threatening to run as an independent for Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)’s seat in the House of Representatives–unless she introduces articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush within two weeks.   Does she have a chance?  It’s hard to say.  Until she became Speaker of the House, Pelosi was wildly popular in her district in San Francisco, which is heavily Democratic.  However, when Pelosi took impeachment (and even most judicial investigations) “off the table” within hours of becoming Speaker, she angered much of her district and a large section of the Democratic base which believes (as do I) that President George W. Bush and VP Richard Cheney have commited “high crimes and misdemeanors” that deeply violate their oaths of office to uphold the U.S. Constitution and that both should be impeached, tried for impeachment in the Senate and, once removed from office, indicted and tried for crimes against U.S. and international law.

I do not know whether Ms. Sheehan would make a good Congressperson, but I applaud her attempt to encourage people to run against politicians of all parties who put their own careers ahead of “doing the right thing” for the common good.

Now, here’s an interesting question: Considering that Bush and Cheney have already repeatedly defied congressional subpoenas and other legal actions, if they were impeached and found guilty, would they leave office or refuse to go? Would George W. Bush, who believes he is above the law, and Dick Cheney, who thinks he is an entirely separate branch of government (!!!), order the National Guard to surround the White House and/or the VP’s residence and fire on any U.S. Marshalls or FBI agents who came to remove them after they refused to go voluntarily?  What kind of Constitutional crisis would THAT involve??
