i'm a recovering asshole, and a recovering coward.  In my late teens, just as i was becoming optimistic about the future, something really awful happened. Someone like me was martyred, by strangers, and for a long time i blamed YOU for it- you're a stranger to me, and i blamed every stranger- and i hated y'all for it.  i withdrew, i numbed, i distracted myself, i told people i wanted the world to get better and told myself a meteor wiping y'all out would do the trick.  "People are trash, they're monsters- fuck 'em!"  All the while thinking i was "the good guy," because i knew pain, and i was angry. i was the most wrathful, righteous, alienated victim in the world, yo. Sound like anybody you know?

i've lived through the age of "terror," and through the world seeming to get uglier, dumber, poorer, meaner, more desperate; but in my fear and my anger and my hatred i was practically unfazed- i could shrink from the world. i could not-care about people, i could shrug and plot my own mere survival. What was it all to me? Hell, i wanted a fight, i wanted an excuse to explode, bring it all on!  But then shit got real. The best person i ever knew- my heart outside my body, my mom- got sick, and needed help. i had to start softening a little. Spending more time seeing how she lived, and wondering how she seemed so happy. Then she got worse. We both knew she'd be gone soon. And i wanted her secret. i asked her how i was supposed to go on- how could i avoid disappointing her- and my friends know well by now what she told me, because i share it pretty freely. Because i'm sincerely so much happier, trying to be dutiful to what she said, to keep her memory alive. You wanna' know what it was?

Mom said "just don't think that you're better than people, and try to be kind." Guy i was, hearing that... was i supposed to defy her, on behalf of my anger? The next day, she was gone. i had a freshly broken heart, and thinking to do. i started trying to understand it all through sharing stories. And then there was a plague, that threw ALL our stories into chaos, but also helped clarify a lot about this society: how it divides, exploits, and discards us- HOW it MAKES us. How my hard heart was a product of it, and how much needed to change. So... i've changed. i'm still angry, but some of it has returned to what it should be- sadness- and it makes such a difference. i'm trying to be kinder, and i've met people who humble me with their courage, so i try to learn from them, and find i'm less afraid. i'm friendlier & less lonely. i want so much now to be helpful, without being a pushover (though, not being a pushover has a cost). And i'm happier. Radically so. So. You need any help?

If you've come this far maybe you trust that i'm for real (or at least i'm trying to be). Maybe you've seen me about town, looking weird, but yo- in a sick, cowardly anti-society like ours, someone cultivating healthy courage *would* look kind of weird though, wouldn't they? i'm not the strongest dude, or the smartest, i'm pretty much broke as shit so until that changes i can't do much money-wise. But i've got two hands; i usually have a first aid kit and i have some training; i might have some basic tools on me, and i'm always down to try to solve a problem; i know some really good people; and yes, i'm often wearing armour- besides the compression being calming, it just makes it easier to talk to people when you FEEL protected. i'm so used to it by now that even if you could just use a calm presence, well... IF i might be able to be of help, please don't be afraid to ask. Like my fav rapper says: "if you ain't an asshole, i'm with you." Wanna' practice being not-assholes together?
