Sydney Dennison is a New York-based theatre director who grew up on a defunct farm in upstate New York, witbh a sprawlingly large family who yelled about their day across the dinner table. This is where her love for storytelling, ensemble work, and vulnerability was born.  With a BA in Theatre Directing from Marymount Manhattan College, she’s now pursuing her MA in Applied Theatre at CUNY School of Professional Studies, focusing on collaborative, community-driven performance.
Known for her ensemble-driven process, Sydney’s rehearsals are collaborative, rigorous, and human-centered, emphasizing emotional rhythm and accessibility. She works in a utilitarian, epic/dialectical theatre framework, if you want to get fancy. Her theatre challenges the intellect while staying deeply connected to the emotional core of the story, always with a touch of humor, and a couple swear words in there to stress out her mother.

Sydney’s work blends dialectical technique with emotional specificity and a subversive edge, often delving into themes of mythology, memory, grief, technology, and the end of the world. While her style is always in flux, she  crwate worlds where surrealism, movement, and sharp humor provoke as much as they reveal. Her process begins with a piece’s social and political context, deconstructing the text to highlight its structures and themes, then amplifying them through movement and visual storytelling. Laban-informed movement shapes the physicality of her characters, while the spectacle of ballet infuses her work with both grace and tension, creating a dynamic between the ethereal and the grounded.
She leads with curiosity, clarity, and care. Her process is ensemble-driven, with a strong focus on structure, emotional rhythm, and audience accessibility.
Her work is her last stand against heartbreak and a love letter to what is coming next.
