Vampyres, Witches, and Queen B’s Oh My::Carolyn Jones

None of these fascinating women should be called “Scream Queens”. (You won’t find Fay Wray here.) Each captured my imagination in one way or another, even at a young age. Perhaps they only starred in ONE horror movie yet that role would linger in my memory long after I’d seen the film. Some I EQUATED with a particular movie. The one thing they all have in common? They’re all bewitchingly beautiful.

Carolyn Jones

I was so envious of her hair and Widow’s Peak.

Well this one should come as NO surprise to those who’ve been reading this series! And it should come as NO surprise that Morticia Addams – as played by Carolyn Jones – was a very influential Archetype when I was growing up.

Ms. Jones was a successful actress whose film career included The Big Heat (1953), The Seven Year Itch (1955), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), 1958’s Marjorie Morningstar (for which she won a Golden Globe Award), King Creole (1958), and How the West Was Won (1962). She even starred in three horror films: The War of the Worlds (1953), House of Wax (1953), and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956).

However, Carolyn Jones’ most famous role was that of Morticia Addams in the TV series The Addams Family which ran from 1964 to 1966.

(I wonder if this is where I subconsciously
formed my love and fascination for carnivorous plants…)

Marla English

Sporting that cute Italian hairstyle
that was all the rage back then.

I’d forgotten how fascinating Ms. English was in The She-Creature (1956) until I re-watched it recently. The movie was so-so, elevated by Marla’s hypnotic (No pun intended.) presence and, of course, her alter-ego, the She-Creature herself.

WITCH.

‘Tis the season to Bewitch-y

Our cats come back to live again in different bodies,
nine full lifetimes for our little ones. Our familiars.
It means they can stay with a witch throughout her entire life,
living side by side.
Because a witch and her familiar is a bond for eternity.

9 of Pentacles, The Chariot, and a Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse

Yes, indeed. Magick and Mayhem ARE afoot. I can feel it in the air…

What energy does this Full Moon possess?

Since Major Arcana (Trump cards) represent life lessons, karmic influences, and archetypal energies that are affecting you right now, and set the scene in a spread – with the other cards relating back to that core Major Arcana meaning – let’s start with The Chariot.

As The Chariot races across the full moon-lit sky is it spreading Magick and Mayhem? Magick, yes. Mayhem…not so much, especially given the other card is the 9 of Skulls. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

The Chariot is the Trump card of Cancer and is ruled by the Moon (as is Cancer). Willpower. Victory, conquest, and triumph. Maintaining order in chaos. Holy Warrior. This card is linked to the Priestess for they are both ruled by lunar energy. The charioteer is her champion and messenger, and his chariot is drawn by a chimera made-up of the four totem animals in the deck: Black panther (my Spirit Animal), serpent, crow, and wolf.

Symbolizing the Willpower and courage needed to defeat obstacles and enemies, The Chariot also represents triumphant victory. It shows you are keeping pace with the changes happening around you. Progress is being made in the quest to find your place in the world.

“Pure intention and inspired motivation are key to The Chariot,
which represents the feeling of triumph in achieving our ambition and the victory of our Will.”
– Phantasmagoria

Now let’s move on to the 9 of Skulls (Pentacles) which is ruled by Venus in Virgo. Crystallization of Matter. Smelling the roses. The 9 of Pentacles is one of the most uplifting and encouraging omens in the suit. When this card appears, you are likely to be feeling a great deal of spiritual peace and happiness. It represents a belief in abundance and plenty, growth and gain.

One of my favorite Tarot cards. I simply adore the imagery.
(9 of Pentacles from the Everyday Witch Tarot)

Additionally, although full moons are an excellent time for letting go of negative energies, a full moon eclipse is NOT the best time to perform release rituals. (Save them for the next full moon.) Instead meditate on all you have to be thankful for. Send blessings out to those who have paid you a kindness – and don’t forget to Howl like a Banshee!

Kim Novak

To say that Kim Novak as Gillian Holroyd in Bell, Book and Candle (1958) was a major Archetypal influence on me growing-up would be an understatement! Gillian dressed really cool and had a cat as her familiar. (‘Natch) She and I also had have the same “quirk”: going barefoot.

Bell, Book and Candle came on the heels of Picnic (1955) (A personal favorite of mine.) and Vertigo (1958) – the film for which she is best remembered.

This Blogger found dress patterns similar to the fabulous fashions Ms. Novak wore in the movie! (I wonder if they come in my size…)
