“She’s even got a cat”, Keria Metz whispered.
And I bet it’s black.”

“Only You Understand Me”
The Greek goddess Hekate is one of the earliest symbols of a witch and her cat. (We will be celebrating the Night of Hekate next month.) Goddess of witchcraft and Magick, her kinship with cats is legendary.
As Goddess of threshholds between the living and the dead, Hekate shares this unique connection with cats, for it’s said they traverse this Veil as messengers – and at Samhain this Veil is at its thinnest.
During the Witch Trials of Medieval Europe, the cat endured an especially strange reputation for shape-shifting from witch to feline and back again. The poem “Cat Nights” by V. Neumann speaks of a little-known Irish legend which said that a witch could turn herself into a cat eight times, but on the ninth time she couldn’t regain her human form. The saying “A cat has nine lives” can probably trace its origins to this legend.
It’s not so easy to knock the life out of a cat or a witch.
– The Tower of SwallowsThe cat has been revered as sacred but has also been cast out of the home, eyed with suspicion by society, and, at various times in history, condemned by the Church as the incarnation of the Devil himself.
Like the Witch, cats are viewed as outcasts. Independent Rebels.
‘Kayso, today we are celebrating National Witch Day. What’s up Witches! I have mentioned before that I’m a Hedge Witch. Hedge witchcraft is usually practiced by solitaries (as opposed to witches who belong to a group or coven) like me, and involves deep study of plants and the natural world. They find magickal intent in day-to-day activities and are intensely connected to Nature and animals. We are mostly self-taught. Additionally, a type of witch who can “hedge jump,” or travel between different worlds. (Although I haven’t experienced this since I took acid in High School.) My aptitude for divining through Tarot most likely is tied to my Irish Traveller ancestry. Also cursing.
Ireland’s got its fair share of famous witches, too.

Those who had been toad [placed under a spell] were altered in some way that was irreversible.
– The Book of Magic
It’s hysterical what people did (do?) to ward off Witches.
- Witch cakes (which look like a spiky bagel) were crafted and suspended behind the door.
- Butter churns were made from mountain ash because many farmers believed that the wood of the mountain ash, or wiggin,” would keep their farms safe from witches’ mischief.”
- Leave a broom lying across the doorway.
- Witch bottle
- In the British Isles, it was believed that the Rowan tree protected against witchcraft and enchantment.
In closing, I’ll leave you with this. It is a character in the novel Triad which is about a woman named Branwen who is possessed by a witch named Rhiannon. The song was written by Stevie Nicks.

Bat Appreciation Week: October 24-31, 2024

What would Bat Appreciation Week be without a Vampire bat. Most of the photos on the web had them baring their fangs. I guess the point was to show-off their unique teeth but I hated all of them. Although the Vampire bat (there are actually three species) is not the prettiest, this pup was absolutely adorable and I couldn’t resist sharing.
Here’s a post that has some very cool information on these amazing little bats:

You’re gonna need file cabinets. A lot of them.

I’ve said this before. I’m a Shapeshifter in the metaphorical sense that I write about anything and everything. Wherever my heart, mind, and curiosity leads me; I have an endless amount of subjects on which I can (and do) write.
For example, more strange stuff happened last week. First Ramses loses his collar (the second one that’s gone missing) somewhere in the house. What I’ve seen happen is when he and Brandon are tusseling Brandon latches onto Ramses by his collar using his hind claws and sometimes it unsnaps (breaks away). We usually find it lying on the carpet in a conspicuous place. I’ve ransacked the place looking for this one because his pentacle charm was attached to it. (No luck.) Then on Saturday my Pentagram necklace somehow broke while we were at the 24th Annual K-9 Search & Rescue event at The Quarter Note (more on this in another Post). I didn’t notice it wasn’t around my neck until we got home that evening. WTF?? Tim and I joked that we’d wake up Sunday morning to find our respective tattoos had mysteriously disappeared. (We breathed sighs of relief to find them intact.) I have since ordered another necklace. But… WTF??? Now I have to hunt down another charm and a non-breakaway collar for The Prince.
Here’s something interesting I stumbled upon today:

I am opinionated but not combative and I have been known to change my perceptions. Someone said “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.” I very often say, “I don’t know shite.” But don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad about the way you feel or what moves you.
Look at this! One of the half-dozen buds I have on my Stapelia gigantea has opened and is being pollinated by flies.
Nature is amazing! I have NEVER had this many strong buds on that plant in the 10+ years I’ve owned it. Good juju. Speaking of the Concrete Jungle, it’s squirrel-nut-burying season which means the little butt heads spend some of their time digging in my pots. Not necessarily burying anything, just being destructive. However, they always appear during the day and are easily deterred so their actions are not nearly as destructive as those of the roof rats.
How about a little pre-Samhain humor?

One of my passions, too. For you Heavy Mëtal Rockers out there (Yeah, you!) here’s a late nod to Frankenstein Day which was last Friday.

Eye of newt and toe of frog… A little bit of this and a little bit of that. This site in a nutshell.
