Happy Easter!

I usually post a favorite work of Easter art, but this year I've decided to do something a little different and post music instead. Enjoy!

Happy Easter 2016! Χριστός ἀνέστη!

Best wishes to all for a happy, contemplative, and restful Easter!  This year's art of the Resurrection comes from Baroque Venetian painter Sebastiano Ricci and dates around 1715-16.  Currently it resides in the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London.  Click the image to enlarge for better detail.

Usually for holiday art postings I go for something from the Renaissance, but Ricci's vision has such a wonderful sense of color and composition.  Immortal angels and all-too-human soldiers alike are stunned by the sheer power of the figure of Christ risen in sublime glory.

Happy Easter 2015! Christos Anesti!

Happy Easter, everybody!  This year's Easter art is a painting (c. 1511) that was only recently identified as a work by Titian, one of the artistic giants of the Italian Renaissance.

Happy Easter! Χριστὸς ἀνέστη!

Veteran readers of this blog know that every Easter Sunday I post a great master's artistic rendition of the Resurrection.  This year's art is a piece of the masterful Averoldi Polyptych by Titian.  Dated 1520-22, the polyptych resides in the church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Brescia, Italy.

If you'd like a little artistic journey through the past, you can see my curated Easter art from 2010 (Fra Angelico), 2011 (Michelangelo), 2012 (Veronese), and 2013 (Michelangelo again).

PS: Cool factoid: This year everybody celebrates Easter on the same day - Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant.

Happy Easter: Fried Cadbury Eggs?!

Yes, you read that right.  FRIED CADBURY CREME EGGS.  Good thing this holiday's about resurrection, because I'm pretty sure this recipe is going to kill me instantly.

Cultural Illiteracy at "the Newspaper of Record"

This is why I don't take "serious" newspapers seriously.  Besides, here is a quotable observation: "It’s difficult to take the Times' copious critiques of Catholicism and religion in general seriously when it is as illiterate as this on the most fundamental of Christian doctrines."  Well, DUH.

Happy Easter!

Every Easter I post a work of religious art for the occasion.  Usually it's a painting, but this year it's a sculpture.  I give you one of my favorite underappreciated works of the great Michelangelo: his beautiful, triumphant Risen Christ (1519-21) in marble, now in the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome.  By the way, Michelangelo's work is a heroic nude; the bit of drapery was added later in the Baroque period.

Oh, it's Easter.  Here's something fun from a previous celebration.

Χριστός Ανέστη!

Happy Easter to all of MM's Orthodox friends.  Christos anesti!  Remember last year's gloriously musical flash mob by Lebanese Christians?  UPDATE: Via text from the lovely La Parisienne: "Happy Real Easter."  Good thing I saved one Cadbury Creme Egg from last Sunday!

MM in the Kitchen: Easter Lamb

It's not Easter without yummy lamb.  Try a pot roast shoulder of lamb with ale and young vegetables.  I'd put some baby potatoes on the side too.

LOL: Hey Girl, It's NYC's Gosling-Themed Easter Egg Hunt

I laughed out loud.  Creative fandom can be pure comedy.  Or, as someone mused, does Ryan Gosling have the best guerrilla PR team in the world?  Oh, who cares?  This Twitter-pated silliness is absolutely hilarious. It did make me forget all that recent nastiness. PS: Mashable has found the brains behind this holiday fun, so kudos to Jenna Livingston for making us laugh.  UPDATE:  Someone just tweeted a photo of the egg that she found.  Oh, my!

Disgustingly Cute Easter

Happy Easter to Everyone!

Awesome: Singing Easter Flash Mob in Beirut Mall

Easter was last Sunday, but this video from Lebanon is too delightful to be passed over.  Watch as a flash mob in a Beirut mall bursts into song, singing "Christ is Risen." It's also a reminder of the deep historical roots that Christianity has in the Middle East -- a fact that is all but forgotten.  Now enjoy the show!  Great job, everyone!
