The Book of Nyx (2025)

And here I'd thought McFarlane had given-up the comic books for toys.

Spawn #300 - J Scott Campbell Variant

Spawn #300 Variant
J Scott Campbell Variant
These days especially, few titles make it to their 300th issue.  While Spawn remains popular, and even has a film adaptation in the works, most titles have been "rebooted" numerous times over the years.  Sometimes (though not always), if they are successful, their original numbering replaces their "reboot" numbering, making it difficult for collectors to figure out which comics belong in what order!

20 Years Spawns Homages

Spawn #220In 1992, Spawn, a new kind of superhero, stepped onto the comics stage under the banner of the newly formed Image Comics. Twenty years later, Todd McFarlane’s creation has become an iconic character in the superhero world, spawning into spin-offs, toys, an animated series, and a blockbuster movie. But the SPAWN comic book series has always been at the center of that empire.

In celebration of SPAWN’s 20th anniversary, McFarlane will return this June as cover artist on his flagship title for the remainder of 2012. McFarlane will also take lead writing for this commemorative issue, SPAWN #220.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Image Comics, the first of these nine covers by McFarlane, SPAWN #220, depicts “Savage Spawn,” referencing the first issue of SAVAGE DRAGON by Erik Larsen. (Cover B - APR120410)

SPAWN #220 will also have a variant cover paying tribute to Rob Liefeld's YOUNGBLOOD #1 (Cover C - APR120411), as well as an original cover from McFarlane himself (Cover A -
APR120409). A black-and-white variant of each of the covers will be available as an incentive for retailers.

In addition, current SPAWN artist Szymon Kudranski has created a cover based on the original SPAWN #1 cover by McFarlane for the SPAWN: 20th Anniversary Collector's Special (APR120418). This special edition of SPAWN #220 publishes Kudranski's interior art in black-and-white along with additional content featuring a look back at a sampling of TODD McFARLANE's inked pages from SPAWN #1. It is limited to 2500 copies.

McFarlane has embarked on this seven-month tribute not just to celebrate SPAWN's and Image Comics’ 20th anniversary, but also to honor the rich history of all comic books.

“Early in my career one of the things I looked forward to after I finished the interiors on a book, was to sit back and try and come up with a single image that would catch the fan’s attention,” said McFarlane. “I had a pretty decent run with some of the Hulk, Spider-Man, and Spawn covers, and I’m going to come back and see if I can draw a few covers that will intrigue everybody.”

SPAWN #220 will be available for order in the April issue of Previews and in stores on June 6th.

Michael Golden to Cover Spawn

Spawn #213Beginning this October, Todd McFarlane's long-running creator-owned series SPAWN will welcome comics legend Michael Golden to the team as he signs on as the series' regular cover artist.

Revered amongst comic book pros and fans alike since bursting onto the scene in the mid-'70s, Golden is perhaps best known for his work on Micronauts and The 'Nam. He has worked on virtually every major character in comics from Superman to Spider-Man, from the X-Men to the Avengers – and well beyond, when you add his amazing cover work to the tally.

"I've been a fan of Michael Golden's almost as long as I've been a fan of comic books. He’s been a huge influence on my artwork over the years ," said McFarlane. "After having the pleasure of inking him on the 200th Anniversary issue of SPAWN, I knew I wanted us to work together again in the near future. When the opportunity presented itself soon after, I knew he was the perfect choice for cover artist. Don’t miss his debut in this month’s issue of SPAWN!"

Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson added, "Between getting back on schedule and a fresh creative team that's pushing the story into new and exciting places, SPAWN has been at the absolute top of its game this year. Adding a powerhouse like Michael Golden to the mix is only going to strengthen an already top-notch series."

Since his new life as the Hellspawn began, Jim Downing has been at-odds with himself. Now, following his confrontation with Clown, Jim is ready to step from the shadows and claim his place as a new messiah for the Digital Age.

SPAWN #213, a 32-page full color comic book for $2.99, will be in stores November 2nd and will be available to order in the September issue of Previews. SPAWN #210 is on sale now.

Todd McFarlane

Spawn #200In 1992, Todd McFarlane co-founded the world's greatest creator-owned comics company, Image Comics, and released his own best-selling comic book, SPAWN. On January 12th, 2011, SPAWN becomes only the second independent series in history to reach the 200-issue mark!

To celebrate, McFarlane will be signing at Golden Apple Comics in Los Angeles, the same store where McFarlane launched the first issue of the groundbreaking SPAWN series.

"On June 2nd, 1992 I sat in a store called Golden Apple Comics and launched the first issue of my new series, SPAWN." says McFarlane. "That day literally set the stage for all the success this book has had since. To honor that monumental beginning, I'll be returning to my roots, so to speak, with the release of the 200th issue of SPAWN, almost 18 years later."

Fans of SPAWN and McFarlane's work can meet him on January 12th, 2011, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Golden Apple Comics, 7018 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA. The signing will be limited to two items per person. The signing will also feature an array of special surprise guests!

Spawn #200

Spawn #200SPAWN, already the best-selling independent comic of all time, celebrates the release of its 200th issue in January! What was once slated as a 27-page story has now ballooned into a staggering 53 pages of artwork. With double the story, the 200th issue benchmark is simply too large to contain! The book may be bigger, but the price remains the same -- only $3.99 -- making it the best value in recent comic book history.

SPAWN will celebrate its 200th issue in high fashion, with the return of series creator Todd McFarlane to the interior artwork. McFarlane has called up an all-star team of award-winning comics luminaries to help him make SPAWN #200 the best issue yet: Greg Capullo (HAUNT, THE CREECH), David Finch (CYBERFORCE, Batman), Jim Lee (All Star Batman and Robin, Batman: Hush), Rob Liefeld (YOUNGBLOOD, Deadpool), Marc Silvestri (THE DARKNESS, CYBERFORCE), Danny Miki (SPAWN, Avengers) and Ashley Wood (HELLSPAWN, Zombies vs. Robots) all contribute to this landmark issue!

Robert Kirkman -- creator of THE WALKING DEAD, the comic book on which the Golden Globe nominated TV series is based -- provides an origin story for Omega Spawn. But he doesn't just write the story -- he draws it, too! Finally, new series artist Szymon Kudranski, who takes over art duties with issue 201, provides a stunning epilogue, giving fans a taste of what's to come in 2011!

"In 1992, Image Comics was formed, and a handful of new titles came out of the chute," says McFarlane. "Spawn was one of those titles. At that time, none of us thought any of the titles we were releasing would hit 200 issues. Yet here we stand, 18 years later, with the 200th issue of Spawn."

McFarlane continues, "I'm glad to be joined on this book by some of the great creators in our industry -- Jim Lee, Robert Kirkman, Marc Silvestri, Rob Liefeld, Michael Golden, David Finch, Ashley Wood, Greg Capullo, Danny Miki, and FCO Plascencia. We look forward to giving you what I believe will be the best value comic you'll buy this year. Spawn #200 has now grown to over twice the size of the original, but the price remains the same."

"This marks only the second time an independent comic has reached the 200-issue mark," says Image Publisher Eric Stephenson. "Few ongoing series from any publisher have the longevity and permanence SPAWN has. Todd has made it into the record books once again, but more importantly, he has created a series that has an enduring place in the hearts and minds of fans all around the world. This milestone issue is a perfect example of why the series so richly deserves its accolades, and after seeing what the creative team has planned, I guarantee you, the best is yet to come."

In SPAWN #200, the most ruthless villain in the Spawn universe returns. Can Jim Downing survive a face-to-face confrontation? Downing will battle his most fearsome opponent yet and get answers from an astonishing source, as two fan-favorite characters make a glorious return in this double-sized issue.

SPAWN #200, a 56-page full-color comic book, celebrating 18 years of the hit independent series with an all-star lineup of comics creators, will be in stores January 5th, 2011, for the obscenely low price of $3.99!

Further, 2011 will be a big year for SPAWN: New series artist Szymon Kudranski is already several issues ahead. Issues 201-205 will be coming out bi-weekly, to build on the momentum of the landmark 200th issue.

Gaiman v. McFarlane Case to be Heard Today

Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane are still in legal battles over characters in McFarlane's Spawn title which Gaiman says he created and should own. According to Gaiman's attorney, McFarlane "...just took some of the characters Neil was a co-creator of and just gave them different names." Which is not at all what Image founders who previously worked at Marvel did when they established the comics house in the early 1990s.

Gaiman worked with McFarlane on a single issue of the title early in its run, in which several, minor, characters were introduced. In 2002, Gaiman filed suit against the Spawn creator, demanding compensation for the revenue those characters he created. Gaiman won the suit and the two agreed to decide upon a figure, but one has yet to emerge. Gaiman has now filed suit for three more characters, which he claims are based on the characters he created.

McFarlane, Liefeld: Spawn #196

Spawn #962 November 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - For the past year, SPAWN: ENDGAME has riveted readers with its game-changing storyline featuring the death of Al Simmons and Todd McFarlane's return to illustrating his seminal creation. In November's SPAWN #196, ENDGAME concludes with a bang as McFarlane shares art duties with fellow Image Comics founder, Rob Liefeld.

"I was looking for good artistic help, and remembered inking over Rob on his New Mutants covers back in the Marvel days, and most recently a little bit of IMAGE UNITED," McFarlane said. "I thought it would be a fun experiment to see what Capullo layouts, Liefeld pencils, and my inks looked like together on a handful of pages."

In the conclusion of SPAWN: ENDGAME, reporter Marc Rosen connects the miracle patient stories to the new SPAWN, Jim Downing, as detectives Sam, Twitch, and Rowand discover the association between Downing's awakening, Bill Winston’s suicide, and the Nortego crime syndicate.

SPAWN #196 (JUL090355), a 32-page, full-color comic book for $2.95, will be in stores November 25th, 2009.

Savage Dragon #15323 September 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - This October IMAGE UNITED begins with a four-part prelude backup-feature, revealing the secret history of the highly anticipated Image Comics founder crossover in SAVAGE DRAGON #153, WITCHBLADE #131, INVINCIBLE #67 and SPAWN #195!

"These backups are not a preview, this is completely original material not collected in the upcoming mini-series," writer Robert Kirkman said. "The IMAGE UNITED PRELUDE will debut Whilce Portacio's new character, FORTRESS, and set up his role front and center in the overall Image Universe. Plus, there's a surprise that's going to shock an awful lot of fans. It'll be your first hint the crossover isn't limited to the seven characters we've seen."

The IMAGE UNITED prelude will be a four-part adventure featuring participants of IMAGE UNITED, illustrated in the unique jam comics style the crossover is already known for. All four chapters come in addition to the full-length features of each issue, starting with SAVAGE DRAGON #153's set up for the upcoming 'Dragon War,' WITCHBLADE #131's all-new status quo, INVINCIBLE #67's conclusion to the Cory Walker illustrated two-parter, and finally SPAWN #195's series farewell to artist Whilce Portacio.

Pictured above is (obviously) Savage Dragon. We will feature the covers to the other comics in the Prelude series singly. The only reason we didn't do this for SD is because we needed an anchor and it is first in the series. - MD

Spawn: Endgame

Spawn #19213 May 2009 (Berkeley, CA) - SPAWN, the long-running superhero saga recently relaunched by series creator Todd McFarlane and fellow Image Founder Whilce Portacio, kicks off the second half of its series-altering storyline 'Endgame' with a distribution-level sell-out making way for the upcoming collection.

"Our goal is to slowly build up momentum and the sellout of issue #191 is another indication that we're accomplishing that goal," McFarlane said. "With a majority of our single issues out of print, the release of the first Endgame collection couldn't be more timely."

SPAWN's current storyarc, 'Endgame,' has seen the original Hellspawn, Al Simmons, end his life as the amnesiac Patient 47 awakens with Al's powers. Soon after, new horrors and allies have come into play with familiar faces, including Al's widow, Wanda, and his worst enemy, The Violator. The next several issues promise to conclude Patient 47's transformation into SPAWN as the truth about his identity is finally revealed. Readers eager to read the entire first half of 'Endgame' can do so in the June-shipping tradepaperback. All fans are advised to check with their local comic book store to see if copies of SPAWN #191 are still available.

SPAWN #192 (MAR092463), a 32-page full color comic book for $2.95, will be in-stores June 3rd, 2009. SPAWN, VOL. 1: ENDGAME PART 1 (APR090346), a 160-page, full-color tradepaperback for $14.99, will be in-stores June 24th, 2009.

Read Spawn #185 - FREE Online!

Spawn 18524 November 2008 (Berkeley, CA) - Image Comics and MySpace have teamed up to release Todd McFarlane and Whilce Portacio's SPAWN relaunch as the second issue sells out at a distribution-level!

"Todd McFarlane Productions is excited to be partnering with Myspace Comics to bring the fans Spawn #185," McFarlane said. "Myspace Comics is the wave of the new generation. Many fans have turned to this form of modern communication. I hope you enjoy looking at a medium that is challenging how things have been traditionally done."

SPAWN #185 shocked comics fandom with its series-altering death of Al Simmons, lead of the series since its debut in 1992, and the mysterious awakening of the long comatose Patient 47. While the link between Simmons' death and Patient 47 is still unknown, this past week's #186 gave the first hints and resulted in yet another immediate sell-out. While limited copies may be available through your local comic book store, a new printing will soon be available.

SPAWN #185, a full-color 22-page comic, is available to read online for free at the link above. Copies of SPAWN #185 2ND PTG (SEP088230), a full-color 32-page comic book for $2.95, are still available.
