wonga pigeon
Image Posted on Updated on
We have resident Wonga Pigeons who while endearing do test the boundaries of civility with their early morning, daytime and dusk repetitive ‘woo-woo-woo’. They are a large slate grey pigeon with a white forehead and black spots on the flank. Quite common on the lower east coast of Australia.
white pigeons in China
One of the reasons I have been off WordPress for the last couple of months is because I was training as an ESL teacher and then went and volunteered at an International Kindergarten in Ronggui Subdistrict in Guangdong Province.
The trip included a week in Yunnan Province as well and it was here I spotted these white pigeons atop a Buddhist temple. There seemed to be an inordinate number of white cats, white guinea pigs and white dogs in China kept as pets .. I don’t know if a white animal means something special to the Chinese .. maybe someone can tell me? I’ll be posting some photos and comments about my time in China in the near future.
brown cuckoo-dove
These lovely doves are a beautiful rusty-brown with a long tail. They are very fond of wild tobacco where this one was feeding. They are common residents in the rainforests and woodlands but only along the edge of Australia’s eastern coast.

This capture shows the beautiful russet-brown feathers and part of the lovely long tale. These birds love the wild tobacco tree and seem to swallow the berries whole as in this past capture.
brown cuckoo-dove
This beautiful russet-brown bird is quite large, growing up to 43cm. It is a type of pigeon that has a long tail and a loud call. Its habitat is the rainforest and forest on the edge of Australia’s east coast from the top end (Cape York) down south to the Victorian border. This one is attracted by the wild tobacco plant of which they seem particularly fond.
sweet lovers
These two crested pigeons were acting so sweetly on the grass out the front of my place. She was resting and he was covering her with ‘kisses’.
crested bronzewing
I’ve been off the bird watching radar lately with the demands of finishing an Arts Degree circumventing most attempts, but I spotted this darling Crested Pigeon walking on the driveway and have to admit they are a real favourite with their contemporary ‘punkish’ eye makeup and ‘gelled’ hair. The Bronzewings are a group of ground feeding pigeons that are common through out most of Australia and they are certainly prolific in my locale.
rock dove
In keeping with the name this rock dove was living with a small flock on the rocky sandstone ledges around Dee Why Point on Sydney’s northern beaches.
