rainbow lorikeets
cheeky visitors

Rainbow lorikeets are common birds here in Australia, and they can become very bold, like a pair who came right to the glass door of the place I was housesitting and peered in at me, chattering non-stop, until I relented and gave them some food… a practice I don’t normally do for wild birds, but one they were used to by the home owner and clearly expected. It did give a lovely opportunity though to snap some close photos.
island parrots
Magnetic Island mid-way off the Queensland coast teems with parrots, including these Rainbow Lorikeets.

Lorikeets are small to medium size parrots coming in around 25-30 cm. They have brush-tipped tongues for gathering nectar and pollens from flowers and will happily share blossom rich trees with other species. This pair are part of a small flock that visit my mother’s garden in Sydney, Australia, many of whom have gotten bold enough to settle in the sun on the verandah railing.
feather fest
This very cute pair of Rainbow Lorikeets decided it was fun to submerge themselves in the bird bath. While birds like to bathe it is usually a quick foray into shallow water before jumping out again and checking out the terrain for possible threats. This pair were quite at ease and rolled around keeping only their heads above water as if pretending to be submarines. Rainbow Lorikeets are prolific in certain parts of Australia and like to hang out in large groups. Their crowd can make an incredible amount of noise as they perch atop native trees stripping them of flowers and seeds, but the high pitch screeching is so full of goodwill and zest for life that you can’t help but enjoy it.
is she looking?
These cheeky Rainbow Lorikeets where playing peek a boo with me from one of the banksia trees opposite my back deck.

The Rainbow Lorikeets are small parrots with long necks, pointed tails and brush-tipped tongues for gathering nectar and pollen from flowers. They are around 25-30 cm and screech noisily while in flight but when feeding make a pleasant single note… a bit like our ‘yum’ ‘yum’ ‘yum’. This one is about to hoe down into the tasty banksia flower.

These aptly named Rainbow Lorikeets are common birds in Australia and travel in large noisy flocks. This pair are taking advantage of the bird bath in my mother’s garden in Sydney, Australia. I love the way the feathers are ruffled up and the way the blue feathers make such a distinct face mask….such beautiful birds!
