Earthquake Engineering Maths
Take 2:
Structural Engineer Ron Klemencic explained on the Discover News that a simple rule of thumb for calculating skyscraper sway was to simply divide the buildings height in by 500 because the building codes demand the building fit a 1:500 sway ratio.
The tallest building in the world at 2,716 feet (828m), the Burj Khalifa, Dubai, would sway back and forth about 5.5 feet or 1.7 m.

Ahhhhhhhhh! But you would have to drag Mathspig onto the 168th floor screaming.
But mathspigs you can work out the sway on the top ten tall buildings in the world.

I Can’t Sleep Math: Caffeine Maths METRIC HERE.

Sensitivity to caffeine varies for individuals, but in healthy adults the half life for caffeine is approx 6hrs meaning your body eliminates half the caffeine you have drunk in 6 hrs. Ref: Caffeine Pharmacology
Caffeine interferes with sleep. One study found that consuming caffeine 6 hours before bedtime reduced total sleep time by 1 hour.

The Half life equation is an exponential function.

The Mayo Clinic advises up to 400mg Caffeine a day for adults, which would be;
10 black teas
7 instant coffees
4 cappuccinos
2 dark roast brewed
less than one cup of Black Insomnia Coffee.
Approx half this amount of caffeine for 14 yos.

Mathematicians can make mountains out of mince pies, but in this case Dr Eugenia Cheng, who is Professor of Pure Mathematics at the University of Sheffield, UK, makes it look fun. The video clip includes some great Middle School Maths that you can eat.

Here is the Harry Potter Text:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, J.K. Rowling
“Have you ever seen anything quite as pathetic?” said Malfoy. “And he’s supposed to be our teacher!”
Harry and Ron both made furious moves toward Malfoy, but Hermione got there first – SMACK!
She had slapped Malfoy across the face with all the strength she could muster. Malfoy staggered. Harry, Ron, Crabbe, and Goyle stood flabbergasted as Hermione raised her hand again.
“Don’t you dare call Hagrid pathetic you foul—you evil—”
“Hermione!” said Ron weakly and he tried to grab her hand as she swung it back.
“Get off Ron!”
Hermione pulled out her wand. Malfoy stepped backward. Crabbe and Goyle looked at him for instructions, thoroughly bewildered.
“C’mon,” Malfoy muttered, and in a moment, all three of them had disappeared into the passageway to the dungeons.
“Hermione!” Ron said again, sounding both stunned and impressed.”

Middle school maths challenge
Algebra & texting
or LGbra & txtN
According to a Nielsen Survey the Average US teen sends 3,000 txt messages a month. Averages don’t tell us very much. As this fab post at Maths PLUS explains. The average number of ears on 5 people is 1.8 if one dude has one ear. The Nielsen study did show the averages by gender.

This is the maximum cost per txt for pre-paid phone cards. Anyone who sends this many txt messages a month would be crazy if they didn’t use a monthly phone plan.

HELP ME!

Some txts are serious. Very serious.
The 24/7 CRISIS TEXT LINE in the USA has helped many teenagers in crisis.
The phone no. in the USA is
741741
the numbers down the Left of the phone.
OR from outside USA add code here. You can find details of the Crisis TEXT LINE in R U There? By Alice Gregory, The New Yorker (9 FEB 2015)
………………………………………………………..
Ha Ha!
Some txts are NOT serious.

Would you pay for this?
