Last week on Canton Builders Spotlight, @ShaulKfir joined us. He’s the Co-Founder of @digitalasset, the team behind the technology that powers @CantonNetwork, and one of the original co-authors of libSNARK.

If you’ve seen headlines about institutions adopting Canton, Shaul’s work is a major reason it’s possible.

Our major takeaway from the interview is that Canton’s institutional foundation, of which elements have been quietly being adopted by institutions for 5 years, is now appearing in retail apps and use cases. Here’s some of what we covered:

They’re actually Mr. Miyagi-ing crypto into TradFi

Shaul prefers the Mr. Miyagi analogy to the Trojan Horse one that’s being used these days.

Institutions have been adopting Digital Asset’s stack since 2020, mostly doing what felt like infrastructure plumbing. Settlement. Collateral management. Tokenized cash. They didn’t necessarily understand at the time why it all had to be self-custodial, decentralized, and composable. But the muscle memory built up anyway. Now they’re ready for what comes next.

This is the backdrop for the entire recent news cycle. DTCC’s decision to use Canton for tokenized collateral, for example, to unlock 24/7 liquidity on over $100 trillion in assets, is the “Mr. Miyagi” muscle memory clicking into place.

How does this trickle down to consumer adoption?

We asked Shaul whether Canton is purely focused on institutions, expecting the standard “for now, but eventually…” answer. He came back faster than that. “No, not at all. It’s not purely about institutions. I’ll even say at a personal level, not speaking for DA, but for myself, I’ve never been interested in helping institutions. That’s a means to an end.”

Then he laid out the model.

“For me, it’s all about helping the end users. And that means the retail users, but for the most part, retail users are served by businesses. So I think about it as B2B2C, or maybe network-to-business-to-consumer. Bringing [Canton to] the institutions, and bringing companies in general, is the way to ultimately bring retail users.”

The analogy he used: streaming. Mainstream users didn’t pick up MP3s or BitTorrent. The mainstream got into streaming when iTunes and Spotify launched. Canton is the compliance-ready private network. The companies building on top of it are the iTunes and Spotify of finance. The retail user shows up when the institutions do.

What the consumer experience starts to look like

Shaul ran through a list of the things he expects to come out of Canton over the next few years that touch consumers directly:

Collateralized lending against tokenized real-world assets. If you’re a normal person with assets, your borrowing options today are limited. You can’t really shop the rates. However in DeFi, if you own ETH or USDC, every lender in the world is competing for your business and you can pick the best deal. Canton is going to bring that same dynamic to the assets normal people own. Tokenized stocks. Tokenized money market funds. Tokenized real estate. The same DeFi unlock that made ETH useful.

Easy on/off-ramps into yield-bearing products serving stablecoins. This is HandlPay’s service offering. If you can let someone with a stablecoin balance move between cash and yield-bearing assets on demand, that’s a huge benefit to people who don’t have access to the kind of banking that lets you do that today.

Improved UX. He came back to this multiple times. Canton was designed around institutional needs, and it’s still behind on ease of use. Improving the consumer experience layer is a big opportunity. His exact phrasing: “Figure out how to get your grandmother to use this.”

Reduced exposure to systemic risk: the retail unlock

We asked Shaul directly: are retail users on Canton because of privacy, or because they’re betting on institutional adoption?

Both, plus a third thing. As a user, you get access to financial products and rates that used to be reserved for the wealthy. You also get something most people don’t think about until it costs them: reduced exposure to systemic risk.

He brought up 2008 and the pension funds that were wiped out by undercollateralized loans. The systems built by crypto are more reliable. If built right, of course.

As a builder, you get to build the consumer layer on top of a network that the largest financial institutions in the world are already settling on.

As a holder, you get a stake in a public-good network that he thinks will run a meaningful portion of global finance in twenty years.

What do the “major deal” headlines mean for consumers?

When we asked what the major institutional deals we have been seeing in the headlines look like for a consumer downstream, he gave a great example.

He recently moved to Israel, which is heavily dependent on the U.S. economy. The ability for an Israeli company to access local-currency liquidity by locking up tokenized U.S. treasuries on-chain is, in his framing, “a huge boom” to economies that aren’t dollar economies.

That benefit compounds down to entrepreneurs, startups, freelancers, and ultimately consumers in those countries.”These things will play out over many, many years. I don’t think people fully understand yet the giant impact that it’ll have.”

A note for builders

The next Spotify (or Google or Amazon) of finance is either at seed stage or hasn’t been founded yet. The 20-year giants of this space are being built today, by people who can finally take the underlying technology for granted.

There are major opportunities available for the companies that figure out how to make Canton usable for retail. That’s why we’re on Canton. The trickle-down has started.

HandlPay | Get paid with your social media handle

Only around 8% of the global population has ever interacted with crypto, and of that, barely 1% use it for P2P payments.

Despite stablecoin transaction volume growing 83% year-over-year. The gap between how good the technology actually is and how many people use it for everyday payments tells you everything.

Stablecoins processed more transaction volume in 2024 than Visa and Mastercard combined, yet your average person still reaches for Venmo without a second thought.

Shifting deeply ingrained money habits doesn’t happen because something is technically superior, a new product behaviour needs to feel genuinely better.

That millisecond of doubt you feel before confirming a crypto payment isn’t a minor inconvenience. It’s unnecessary psychological warfare.

It’s this friction that helps keep the 92% away. Nobody abandons PayPal for something that requires a test transaction ritual just to feel safe.

By 2030, stablecoins are projected to handle 5–10% of all cross-border payments, somewhere between $2–4 trillion in value. This number will increase exponentially when platforms solve the experience layer.

Increasing reliability, and reducing stress and effort required is exactly what HandlPay does.

We connected the dots and asked: What if you could reliably send a stablecoin payment to someone’s social media username, with routing and conversion handled automatically?

You wouldn’t have to second guess.

You’d just HANDL that payment. Anxiety free.

HandlPay | Get paid with your social media handle

You use Venmo with a public feed, you pay for everything with a card, and your crypto transactions sit on a public blockchain for anyone to see. So what?

Here’s the thing: no one was really looking. A human scrolling through blockchain explorers can barely make sense of the noise. Even a professional auditor.

That era is done. AI’s ability to scan our data goes far beyond our comprehension. It ingests, correlates, and ultimately, uncovers our story. The infrastructure is already live.

Your payment history is a diary you didn’t know you were writing

Blockchain analytics firms like Chainalysis, Elliptic, Nansen, and Arkham already use AI and machine learning to trace funds, cluster wallet addresses, and build behavioural profiles. Nansen labels over 300 million addresses.

The card payment world is worse because the surveillance is centralized, opaque, and happening behind closed doors rather than on a transparent ledger. (Read more on how card companies are tracking your data in our next article)

“Yeah but I’m not doing anything illegal, so I’m good”

Soon, catching criminals will be the smallest use of these products.

Crypto wise, the moment you touch a centralized exchange, when you on-ramp fiat into crypto or off-ramp back out, your wallet address gets tied to your verified identity through KYC.

From that single anchor point, AI can see your entire transaction history and track behaviour you did not even think to question.

Now ask yourself who might want that profile.

Your government, obviously, tax authorities are already using blockchain analytics at scale. But also your employer running a background check. Your landlord deciding whether you’re financially stable enough to rent. An insurance company assessing your risk profile. A vindictive ex. Amazon when deciding how much to charge you, specifically you, for toothpaste.

Understanding “Surveillance Pricing” will make you care about transaction privacy

If the profiling problem feels abstract, this next part will make it concrete.

We are entering the era of what the FTC calls surveillance pricing. The practice of using AI to sift through personal data and set individualized prices based on what an algorithm predicts you’re willing to pay.

Not dynamic pricing, where everyone sees the same fluctuation based on supply and demand.

Personalized pricing, where two people looking at the same product at the same time see different numbers, because the system knows different things about each of them.

This is already happening.

The FTC launched an investigation into the practice in 2024 and published preliminary findings in early 2025. Delta Air Lines revealed it was testing AI-driven pricing through a partnership with Israeli startup Fetcherr, with plans to expand algorithmic pricing to 20% of its fares.

When the Delta president told investors they would use personal information to set an increasing share of prices, it triggered Congressional scrutiny and a letter from three U.S. Senators warning that the practice would push fares toward each customer’s personal “pain point”.

The AI models powering this don’t just use your browsing history and location. They correlate purchase habits like browsing time and abandoned carts to other details like device type, and whether your phone battery is low.

A Consumer Reports investigation found eggs priced at five different levels at a single Safeway location.

Booking.com

uses modeling to decide which users get special offers, reportedly driving a 162% increase in sales.

Here is where it gets really dangerous: we are on the doorstep of AI agents making purchases on our behalf.

When AI shops for you, privacy becomes everything

In February 2026, Coinbase launched Agentic Wallets: wallet infrastructure specifically designed for AI agents to autonomously hold funds, trade tokens, and make payments without human approval at every step.

Days later, MoonPay launched MoonPay Agents, Visa has introduced a Trusted Agent Protocol. PayPal and OpenAI are partnering on agent checkout. Google’s AP2 standard is gaining traction for both fiat and crypto agent payments.

The idea is simple: you tell your AI agent what you want, set parameters like a spending limit, and it handles the rest. Finding options, comparing prices, executing the transaction.

But think about what this means in a world of surveillance pricing with transparent financial data.

The merchant’s AI knows your agent is coming. It can see your wallet’s transaction history. It knows your financial behavior across months or years of on-chain activity.

It doesn’t matter that you set a strict $800 budget for that ($700) laptop, the merchant’s pricing algorithm has already calculated that you’d actually pay $780 based on your on-chain profile, and it prices accordingly.

You “saved” $20 against your budget. You overpaid by $80 against what someone with a private financial history would have been offered.

Scale this across every purchase your agent makes. Groceries, subscriptions, services, digital goods. You’re bleeding value constantly, invisibly, because your financial life is an open book.

Even with strict parameters, your agent is negotiating from a position of total informational disadvantage. The merchant’s AI has perfect visibility into your financial profile. Your agent has whatever budget ceiling you set.

So yes, you do have something to hide. Now go hide it already.

AI blockchain analytics are becoming more sophisticated every quarter. Surveillance pricing is spreading across industries. AI agents are being given wallets and spending authority.

Your public transaction history is the single most valuable dataset for anyone who wants to take more of your money.

The common argument, “I’m just buying coffee or a memecoin, who cares” misunderstands the nature of AI pattern recognition.

It’s not about any single transaction. It’s about the aggregate. Thousands of small transactions paint a detailed portrait of your income, your habits, your vulnerabilities, your vices, your schedule, and your willingness to pay.

You can’t see the portrait by looking at individual strokes. AI can.

Transaction privacy on crypto payments isn’t a feature for criminals. It isn’t a nice-to-have for the paranoid. It is becoming a basic financial necessity, the equivalent of not handing every store you walk into a complete copy of your bank statements before you start shopping.

The people who figured this out early will have paid fair prices, kept their financial profiles private, and maintained their negotiating power in an AI-mediated economy. Everyone else will wonder why everything seems to cost them a little more than it should.

You don’t care about transaction privacy today. But your AI agent will wish you had.

HandlPay | Get paid with your social media handle

The following IPOs are worth watching as they will significantly influence the future of how money moves globally.

The 2026 IPO wave will push blockchain payment rail adoption

After a multi-year drought following Coinbase’s 2021 debut, crypto firms raised $3.4 billion through IPOs in 2025. Now 2026 is shaping up to be even bigger, with several payment and infrastructure companies targeting public markets.

Kraken, The Heavy Hitter

Target: Q1 2026 | Valuation: $20 billion

Kraken filed confidentially with the SEC in November 2025 and is targeting a Q1 2026 listing on NASDAQ or NYSE. The San Francisco-based exchange has evolved beyond just crypto trading:

Record financials: $648M revenue in Q3 2025 (up 50% quarter-over-quarter), projected to exceed $2.5B for full-year 2025

Expanded offerings: Now includes commission-free stock trading alongside crypto, positioning as a full financial platform

Strong backing: $800M raised at $20B valuation from big institutions including Citadel Securities, Jane Street, and Apollo Global

What it means for payments: Kraken’s diversification into traditional equities alongside crypto signals convergence between traditional and digital finance. Their IPO could accelerate institutional adoption of crypto payment rails.

Consensys (Metamask), The Infrastructure Play

Target: Mid-2026 | Valuation: $7 billion

The Ethereum infrastructure giant behind MetaMask wallet has tapped JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs to lead its IPO. With 30+ million monthly users, Consensys offers pure crypto-infrastructure exposure:

Product ecosystem: MetaMask wallet, Infura node infrastructure, and Linea Layer 2 network

Recent wins: SEC dismissed lawsuit over MetaMask’s staking features in February 2025

Strategic positioning: Added Bitcoin and Solana support in 2025 to become a true multi-chain wallet

What it means for payments: MetaMask’s ubiquity makes it a default payment gateway for Web3. A successful IPO would validate consumer-facing crypto wallets as essential financial infrastructure.

Ledger, The Security Angle

Target: 2026 | Valuation: $4+ billion

French hardware wallet maker Ledger is preparing a NYSE listing with Goldman Sachs, Jefferies, and Barclays:

Market position: Over 6 million hardware wallets sold globally

Growing revenue: Triple-digit millions in 2025, driven by record crypto hacks pushing demand for self-custody

Institutional shift: Expanding from consumer devices to full-stack institutional custody solutions

What it means for payments: As merchants and freelancers accept more crypto, secure custody becomes critical. Ledger’s IPO highlights that wealth is moving on chain and there is high demand to protect it.

BitGo, Already Public

Listed: January 22, 2026 | Valuation: $2.08 billion

BitGo became the first crypto custody company to go public in 2026, pricing at $18/share (above the $15–17 range) and raising $212.8 million:

Services: Custody, wallets, staking, trading, financing, and settlement for institutions

Growth: Revenue estimated at $16B for 2025, up more than 5x from prior year

Market reception: Shares rose ~25% on opening day

What it means for payments: BitGo’s successful debut proves institutional demand for regulated crypto custody and settlement services.

Why This Matters for Payment Processors

1. Institutional Validation: Wall Street banks like JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs leading these IPOs signals crypto is no longer taboo which will improve it’s perception for Web2 users.

2. Regulatory Clarity: The SEC’s dismissal of cases against Consensys and improved regulatory framework under the current administration is creating a more predictable environment that new users feel comfortable in.

3. Payment Infrastructure Maturation: These companies are building the plumbing for a new financial system (custody, wallets, settlement, stablecoins).

4. Customer Demand Signal: Record revenues across these firms indicate growing consumer and institutional appetite for crypto services.

5. Integration Opportunities: As these platforms go public, they’ll have more capital to build merchant-friendly payment tools and partnerships.

The crypto IPO wave of 2026 will significantly improve crypto’s perception and adoption institutionally which will quickly trickle down to its adoption by merchants and end users. Infrastructure for digital payments is a compelling play and has true product-market fit. For businesses in the payment space, this represents both opportunity and competition as traditional and crypto finance converge.

HandlPay | Get paid with your social media handle

The idea that “someone could be monitoring/stalking their payment behaviour and history” is not a concern that registers in their nervous system because it was never an issue before.

So please tell us how the crypto industry plans to onboard billions of users with these glaring, massive, tsunami sized red flags standing in the way.

They can’t. Unless everyone starts to adopt the privacy “narrative”. But it’s not just a narrative.. It’s basic product roadmap common sense.

Every payment rail needs to be private. (Unless it is relevant for it to be public such as in charity or government spending use cases).

We at HandlPay commit to implementing a privacy layer in our routing system and the upgrade is in the works.

We specifically chose to build on Canton Network because their chain has a specific approach to privacy that we prefer. They appeal to institutions and not to anti-establishment utopians. On Canton, the data is available on a “need-to-know basis”. Banks and regulators have access to information to help prevent fraud and maintain compliance.

Providing institutional-grade privacy to all crypto related payment products is key to onboarding the next generation of users. They eclipsed Visa and Mastercard’s combined volume ($23.7 trillion in 2025) and handled roughly a third of the entire U.S. ACH system’s transaction flow which was $88–92 trillion in 2025.

Galaxy Digital predicts stablecoins will surpass ACH in 2026.

For those who don’t understand what this means, ACH (Automated Clearing House) is the U.S. electronic payment network that processes direct deposits, bill payments, tax refunds, and business-to-business transfers.

It’s essentially the backbone of American domestic payments.

Market cap exploded from $205 billion in January 2025 to $318 billion by January 2026.

Emerging Markets Led the Revolution

While developed markets debated frameworks, billions of people in emerging markets simply adopted the better technology.

Nigeria: $24 billion in annual stablecoin flows. 26 million users (12% of the population). Nigerian exchanges now quote prices in USDT by default.

Argentina: $93.9 billion in stablecoin value in 2025. With 140% inflation and the peso down 90% since 2020, stablecoins represent 3% of the entire M1 money supply. People pay rent and receive salaries in USDT.

Turkey: $63 billion in stablecoin payments (3.7% of GDP). With the lira down 80% since 2018, merchants accept digital dollars for B2B transactions.

Brazil: $318.8 billion (one-third of all Latin American crypto activity!)

The Remittance System Collapsed Overnight

Traditional remittances charge 6.65% on average for a $200 transfer. Sub-Saharan Africa pays 7.9%. Transfers take 3–7 days.

The old system is dead. Though traditional remittance companies are aware of this and are working to penetrate this market via collaborations and aquisitions.

Ether’s Profit is Absurd

Over $10 billion profit in the first nine months of 2025 alone. That’s more than Bank of America ($8.9B) and rivals Goldman Sachs ($12.56B), with only 150 employees.

Tether now holds $135 billion in U.S. Treasuries, making it the 17th largest holder globally, ahead of South Korea. It serves 500 million users with $174 billion USDT in circulation.

Meanwhile:

Visa debuted stablecoin settlement in December 2025

Standard Chartered and Amazon are exploring launches

USDC transaction volume ($18.3T) overtook USDT ($13.3T) in 2025, despite smaller market cap

Regulation Accelerated Adoption

The GENIUS Act passed in July 2025, establishing the first comprehensive U.S. framework for payment stablecoins under FDIC supervision. The EU’s MiCA came into full effect. Hong Kong passed its Stablecoin Bill. Twelve countries introduced frameworks by mid-2025.

Why Stablecoins Won, Its Obvious

Faster: Instant vs 3–7 days

Cheaper: 0.1–2% vs 6–8% fees

More stable: USD vs currencies losing 80–90% of value

More accessible: Smartphone vs bank account & physical branch

Its Time For Consolidation Now

The next battleground is user experience especially for B2C. Solutions that abstract away blockchain complexity will capture mass adoption.

The winners will be platforms that make hundreds of stablecoins feel like one seamless balance, where users never think about routing, bridging, or which chain they’re on such as with HandlPay.

We’re building cross-chain aggregation, automatic pooling of received payments, and frictionless sending across any network.

The revolution already happened. Now comes the race to make it invisible.

HandlPay | Get paid with your social media handle

No independent team should go about their launch all alone. Coinbase’s new x402 protocol enables direct on-chain payments triggered automatically by code, scripts, or AI agents in this case.

This is the rise of the “agent-to-agent” payments, or “A2A”.

You asked, can this be leveraged by HANDL? Yes.

Here’s the angle, AI agents aren’t going to talk through complex payment flows with humans. They’re not sitting in chats clarifying IBAN numbers or downloading payment apps on your behalf/passing human verification tests.

They must be able to simply execute.

We are really well positioned here. All an AI needs to do is aim a payment to someone’s social media username. We take care of the ideal routing and on/off-ramps. Finding solutions to make your transfer history completely private is now one of our key focuses. We’re fans of Canton because their chain has a very different take on privacy than others, which we prefer.

For example, other chains obfuscate privacy everywhere end-to-end. This does not work well for institutional needs.

On Canton, the data is available for those who need to know.

Banks can have access to the transaction details of their customers (very important). They can also share this information with each other to flag frauds.

Regulators have access to a compliant ready audit trail.

What is great is that Canton is uncomplicated.

The shielded transactions you find on other chains? Privacy and usability do not meet here. We’re building something that matters.

Private & simple stablecoin transfers = real impact, this is what matters to us.

Better money technology is found here.

HandlPay | Get paid with your social media handle

The Canton Network
