Pleiades:  This titled form was invented in 1999 by Craig Tigerman, Sol Magazine’s Lead Editor. Only one word is allowed in the title followed by a single seven-line stanza. The first word in each line begins with the same letter as the title. Hortensia Anderson, a popular haiku and tanka poet, added her own requirement of restricting the line length to six syllables.

Background of the Pleiades: The Pleiades is a star cluster in the constellation Taurus. It is a cluster of stars identified by the ancients, mentioned by Homer in about 750 B.C and Hesiod in about 700 B.C. Six of the stars are readily visible to the naked eye; depending on visibility conditions between nine and twelve stars can be seen. Modern astronomers note that the cluster contains over 500 stars. The ancients named these stars the seven sisters: Alcyone, Asterope, Celaeno, Electra, Maia, Merope, and Tygeta; nearby are the clearly visible parents, Atlas and Pleione. The poetic form The Pleiades is aptly named: the seven lines can be said to represent the seven sisters, and the six syllables represent the nearly invisible nature of one sister.

Tanaga Submissions

One more day to submit your Tanaga poetry for the June issue of Voices of Poetry and Prose!

Broken Promises (eX Poetry)

Within Forever
eliminate obsidian regrets
armoured broken promises dissolve
unveiled opaline destinies
are claimed

So, this form is based simply on the fact that Kirsten Uninterrupted lamented the fact that there are no Poetry Forms begin with the letter ‘X‘! So she thought I might come up with .. something! And of course, Fantasies of a Forlorn Fairy is an Expert at getting me to include a ‘Director’s Cut‘ for an explanation of my poetry! Oh, you two always inspire me!!! Thanks to both of you!

So, where is the ‘X’? Okay, bear with me!

Well, since ‘X’ is the 24th letter in the alphabet, and it is also a perfect multiplier of 2, 3 and 4 the number of words in each line should be ascending and then descending….

2
3
4
3
2

So that when you go up or down, to the middle, it multiplies out to .. 24!

2 x 3 x 4 = 24
4 x 3 x 2 = 24

And there must be 5 lines…so a nice little ‘hidden’ sequence of 2,3,4,5 all in a nice short poem! Ah, the math teacher in me … emerges!!

And to make it a bit more interesting, the ‘HEART’ of the poem, which are the middle 2 words of the heart of the poem, should also be .. THE TITLE of the poem! So above, ‘…broken promises…’ are the middle 2 words of the ‘heart’ of the poem, hence, the title!

And by now, the hidden theme within the ‘X’ of the poem should reflect … an EX relationship, or as I would like to call it ‘ eX Poetry’ with the capital letter, on the X, not the e!!!

And if possible, an optimistic ending for ALL OF US who have experienced an ‘eX’ of any kind!

Just playing around! Hope you like it!

And I just realized, silly me, if you change the order to 4,3,2,3,4 … you almost get an ‘X‘ pattern, and with same rules!

Within Forever
eliminate obsidian regrets
armoured broken promises dissolve
unveiled opaline destinies
are claimed

(the original above and below, a slightly different, inverted version using 4,3,2,3,4)

Armoured broken promises dissolve
eliminating obsidian regrets
broken promises
reveal opaline destinies
claim no random Fate

This is just a sample of the poetry you will find in Voices of Nature. There are dozens more poems for you to savor.

You can buy it here for only $.99 for Kindle – it also available in paperback ($7.19) on Amazon.

Poetry gives voice to what the eyes see and the heart hears.

Inspiration exists all around us. Beauty can be found in the laughter of a child or the blooms of a tree. Poems are one person’s interpretation of the world seen through their eyes and felt in their heart. Poetry is soul food – plain and simple.

Voices of Nature is a collection of poems that reflect the inherent splendor of nature all around us. This book utilizes a variety of poetry forms to paint word pictures.

One review said “The sheer variety of styles in this poetry book is amazing. Haiku, triple haiku, acrostic, rondeau, and so many others. Even better is that they explain the poems in the back, which is a great service to the curious reader.

Each poem is clear and paints a perfect picture of nature. Though, I have an odd feeling that both poets were tired of winter since that had the most amount of poems out of the season sections. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I did love the ‘Thunder and Lightning’ acrostic for the imagery and ‘New Day’ for the complicated style and bringing an odd sense of serene closure to the book.

I would highly recommend this poetry book. Even if you’re not into poetry, the pieces for every season will probably have you going ‘I thought the same thing.’

Pamela previously released a collection of love poems titled Dreams of Love with several five star reviews. She has been writing for a short time, but pours her soul into her poetry.

You can actually try modifying this exact magnetic poem yourself – HERE ! (You can’t hurt it!)

I wanted to try something different with Magnetic Poetry Online. So why not Binary Poems, each a Fib, and try to make each poem stand alone, but also … try to make ONE combined poem, read horizontally!

So, read the two Magnetic Poems separately. Then, below the magnetic poetry, I have combined them into one poem, as if read ‘horizontally’ into one single poem, hopefully a bit different! Very challenging and probably more like free verse than anything! And feel free to try switching the entire poem around too! Just click … here!

Untitled II – Poetry Workshop

From the shadowed depths of a
distant mountain lair(s)
Wings spread far to mask
the dull sky above (and)
(Prismatic!) Rainbow colours (bands) beneath
outstretched talons
This Wyvern rides storms
to their thundering (thunderous) displeasure
Past ^weathered^ lighthouses offering
their own luminous noise
beckoning Travellers to
avoid or adhere to their
singular paths
Ever circling within
a vortex of sound
Wyvern effortlessly maps
cyclonic trails
leaving wispy contrails of
dissipating mist and dew
Clockwise
Always & forever clockwise
For t’other would be … unwise
especially for … him
Fast(er) approaching yon lighthouse
Parallel to her beam
Synchronous to her rhythm
He pitches, rolls, yaws
She can do nothing but illuminate
Finally Intersecting her beam
Rainbow explodes …..

This is the second post describing a free Poetry Writing Workshop I attended at our public library. My first poem is at Untitled I – Poetry Workshop if you are interested.

Our second exercise was even more challenging!

We were asked to describe Victoria with words that described what was good and bad about Victoria. What was best and, well, not necessarily worst, but what we didn’t necessarily like about living here!

Then, pick 3 from each column, and … write another poem … IN 12 MINUTES! My 3 choices for ‘Best’ is the left column, although I actually like the storms here! And my word was lighthouse!

Again, I am including a scan of my notebook, of my real time  ‘purple digital scratchings‘, of this poem. I didn’t include any breaks or indents this time though. And yes, I actually didn’t use ‘mountains‘, as I only needed one!
