WINTER BLUES

It's been a long, long week. I was overjoyed when Friday finally rolled around. The new showroom set up has been a stressful one. And if you guessed I was a bit happy then to do nothing all weekend, you'd be right. We had some of the coldest temperatures this winter yet, at least with the gales we had. My thermometer read 18 today at around 1pm. The only time I ventured out was to fill the bird feeders and put out new suet's. It has been a frenzy too with the birds. I was able to have dinner one night with a friend in Pine Grove Furnace... but other than that, I have kept my social schedule cleared for my own alone time. A selection of very obscure films were viewed this weekend, and just a few oink fest. But there is always time to catch a few snaps around town.

I have always been intrigued by the Frankenberger Tavern. Other than rumors of hauntings, I didn't know much about it till a few years ago. The tavern is recognized as the oldest building in the borough. It was built by George Frankenberger in the forest then, now Main Street, between Harrisburg and Carlisle, in 1801.The place offered passing cattle drovers and farmers a place to get a warm meal and a place to sleep. The guest would sit by the fireplace and share the news from where they had traveled.

I pass this church on the way to work. The Peace Church was built in 1798 by a reformed congregation. It's a historic structure of limestone in Georgian style. In 1806, the local Lutheran congregation was invited to share the building " in peace" for their services. The church's builder was Martin Rupp. The interior of the church is notable for its wine glass pulpit, a balcony that's wraps around three sides and a Conrad organ that was installed in 1807. It looks so charming in all seasons.

If one is familiar with Mechanicsburg; there seems to be a church on every corner! I have no idea how they all stay as active.

Pine Grove Furnace State Park

Our public library, the Joseph T Simpson Library, I'm a member there and the Camp Hill Library alike, but this locating is a pleasant day spent for a getaway to escape. The building was an amazing repurpose. The renovated stone grain warehouse dates back to the 1840's...and has found new life as a gorgeous library of three floors of books, resources, DVD'S, and music and other library services like story times. poem readings, and other events all free for residents.

I was a swell place to grow up in. And since being back, I have learned more about the history of the little hamlet, that I didn't take much time in my youth to learn about.

WINTER SHADOWS

It been another cold, cold weekend. I let Sophie out the other night around 1am and noticed these very cool, no pun intended, shadows from the tree branches cast on the back garden from the moon.

Today, nothing but sunshine, but deceiving. It's still only 23 degrees. But what a view out the middle bedroom windows!

The bluebirds have been out in force all week!!!!
The hearted bird bath has been a favorite.

SNOW QUEEN

The Snow Queen finally visited!!!

Yes, I'm happy! Mind you, our snow removal guy is out currently as he is getting a knee replacement. I suspect we got between 8-9". Nothing I couldn't handle. I love it. It peacefully, quiet, and not a sole on the road or to be seen.

And yes! I did indeed take out some "refreshment" while shoveling!!!

Sophie went out numerous times, once even without her little coat. She dashed around a bit before having enough. Now she is out cold, sleeping. I already have a half day tomorrow. It's been a nice day all told, and now awaiting a New England Pot Roast to come out of the crock pot, with some red wine. Some candles lit. A beautiful card received yesterday made me smile from the wonderful Tundra Bunny, who also informed me she made a nice donation of a soft stretcher in Buster's memory to her local humane society.

 Isn't she sweet!

SNOWFALL

It's been a relaxing weekend, some baking of bread and biscuits, and we finally got a nice little snowfall. The first few pictures were taken last night before I turned into bed around 3:30am. I love snowfalls at night.

Today was just as pretty.

Nothing going in the gardens.

What weekends are for!!!! After the quick shoveling...I came in for a bucket of coffee and my homemade biscuits and sausage gravy! And after losing 15lbs I didn't feel a bit guilty either.

USUAL SUSPECTS

It's been a while since we have seen some of the Usual Suspect out in the baren garden and grounds. I was able to finally get out yesterday, and a few times the last few weeks or so with the canon, while I collected many felled twig and branches, what with all the strong gales we've had lately. Not to mention the bird feeders are emptying quick this time of year. I have contemplated getting a heated bird bath, as many birds have a hard time finding a water source this time of year...but will not bite the bullet yet, not to mention I shut the outdoor water off in the winter. For now, I continue with my special mixture of bird seeds, dried fruit pieces and suet bricks. And a week had passed since any more carriage from the hawk. With the drab of winter, and no color at all. no life in the garden except for my rosemary for all things...it looks bleak. Thank heavens for the birds...they are adding the life currently...among others. So many too. They are others I couldn't get a snap of.

I love hearing the chipping of the Juncos.

I heard a new call this week I didn't recognize. Look everywhere till I finally spotted the suspect. Turns out it's a Yellow-Bellied Sap Sucker. Since then, I spotted a what might be a couple.

Meanwhile, speaking of perches...Sophie Lucille in one of her usual spots. I think she must adore the tree. She always lays on the end of the sofa next to the tree. I think she overheard me yesterday saying it will be coming down by week's end.

Thats right...breath it all in my child.....
