What’s Your Strength?

What is Your Strength?

by Eliza Mint

I truly do not believe being an SL model is something anyone is “born” with.  It’s not RL where we are born beautiful with perfect bone structure and skin, etc, etc.  Here in SL, we all have the possibility to become excellent models.  Does everyone have what it takes?  Of course not.  We’ve all met a couple people along our modeling travels that just simply do not “get it”.  They simply do not take the time to scrutinize themselves or take advice well or simply are not professional enough to do well in the SL modeling world.  Could they change and improve?  Sure, with some work.

Some people are “natural” SL models.  Perhaps they were serious gamers in a previous life and can strut along the runway just as easily as they can walk on their own two RL feet.  I, personally, was never a gamer and as a noob, I could barely walk up staircases.  One good friend used to be so kind as to teleport me to tops of stairs, I was so challenged.  I’m still impressed by models who can glide up and down complicated runway structures, stopping on a dime.  Over my 2.5 years in SL, I’ve gotten better.  Other people were builders in SL before coming to modeling.  They know their way around prims.  I’m proud to say that I once ran a clothing shop and while I truly kind of stunk at designing, it taught me a lot.  I can make simple pieces to finish a styled outfit or edit jewelry to get it just how I need it.  This is not something that comes naturally to me, but the more I work at it, the better I get.  Some people are fashionistas in RL and it translates well into SL.  They can make any outfit “flow”.

There is a saying, “Fake it until you make it” and it certainly holds true in SL modeling.  What’s your strength?  We all have one.  Maybe you are great at picking poses; being a little daring to get just the right pose to rock that outfit on the runway.  Maybe you have a great attention to detail and have the patience to cam around yourself a million times, editing and rotating those clothing pieces until they are perfect.  Maybe you’re a brand new model and all you have is some Lindens and your personality.  🙂  Well, that works too.  Then be the professional and sparkling personality you know you have and work it!  We’re all not perfect.  Not in RL and not in SL.  Most of us are still learning, day by day.

I haven’t been modeling very long.  I started my first class in January.  I’ve taken two courses so far and I’ve been friendly enough to make a good number of friends I can count on.  I think they have been my greatest asset in the modeling world.  People I can say, “Where can I get a light purple ponytail hair with sparkles?” and they give me some clues or LMs.  Friends I can brainstorm outfits with.  It’s only from each other that we learn.  We learn of new styling products, new modeling tools, and new techniques.  A friend that can give us a final look over and remind us that we forgot to shrink our ass!

You have a strength…and you’re not perfect.  How can you use the skills you currently have to grow as a model?  What strengths can make you stand out?  Only you can answer that.  So the next casting you have or class you attend, go in thinking positively about the ONE skills you have that no one can take from you.  Even if it’s “I’m friendly enough to make one friend today in class,” or “I know every prim on my avatar is perfectly placed”, then do it!

Among The Daisies

As I was walking around enjoying some of the spring filled sims around SL.  I decided to share with you a look that I often wear while enjoying a day out with friends, a romantic day picnic with my honey, or just a relaxing day at a beautiful nature park while reading my favorite novel. On this day, I am found frolicking through daisies wearing a cute spring dress in pink, my favorite color, accented in grey and white colors. The black belt with a silver buckle cuts the pattern of the dress giving it a separate shirt and skirt feel. I paired it with my favorite black and white ballerina flats. I am wearing a causal up do with big curls and falling wispy hair I love the black band that accents the hair.   It completes my day look and if an evening date happens after my day out, this style can be worn with a gorgeous formal dress.

Clothing for the more discerning customer.

Already Established as an African Home Decor Designer, Cococurious MacBain is now setting the scene with her new line of women’s clothing. Coco has been on Second Life now for two years and is taking the game by storm with her beautiful designs. Her store, named Gemini Concepts Clothing is described as affordable clothing for the mature SL woman. One of our newer models Dreamybrneyed Fairey interviewed the illustrious owner and this is what she found out about this up and coming designer.

DF: WHEN DID YOU PREMIERE YOUR FASHION LINE?
CM:The Summer of 2010

DF: WHO (IF ANYONE) INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER?
CM: A Good friend Woo Nitely inspired me with her stylish dresses and we were suppose to begin “Gemini Concepts” before she had to leave SL for RL demands.

DF: WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR STYLE OF FASHION?
CM: I create clothing that I would wear in RL and clothing that compliments a womans look without being too overly revealing. Most of the clothing I have seen drips SEX and leaves nothing to the imagination. Sometimes more rather then less can be just as Sexy .

DF: WHO ARE YOUR TARGET CLIENTS?
CM : As a “mature SL woman” I began targeting the mature older ladies of SL, however, women from all age groups, races and economic status have shopped at my store . Gemini Concepts is for all women.

DF: WHAT ARE YOUR ULTIMATE GOALS AS A DESIGNER?
CM:Quality at an Affordable Price. I enjoy doing Custom work. With an idea, I have found that I can let my imagination create something beautiful for my customers at their request which is a one of a kind design.

DF:WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR PRODUCT LINE GOING HERE ON SL?
CM:Presently working on offering my Clothing as an affiliate vendor in order to get my work out to many more places all over SL.

DF:ANY WORDS OF ADVICE FOR OTHER DESIGNERS ATTEMPTING TO DO WELL HERE IN SL?
CM:Go with what you feel. Create things that you would like to wear. There is nothing in my clothing line that I would not wear. Remember, just like in real life everyone is not going to like everything you create, but you will be surprised at the ppl that have the same taste and style that you do. Never stop learning. A critic is a good thing.

Coco is an approachable designer who takes her business here on sl seriously. Although she is just starting her line of clothing she is quickly becoming a known name within the designer community. Located on the Island of Lost Dreams, CocoCurious Macbain has certainly found her dream here on sl and is definitely an up and coming designer to watch.

My must have frock – Bluebell.

My must have frock for the season has to be ….”AMERICAN BEAUTY ” from Vitas Boudior . I have to say it is the most exquisite , beautiful dress I’ve ever seen on Second Life , if you wear this you can guarantee to stand out from the crowd .
The plunging neckline of the bodice has a texture like the finest silks which hug every curve of your body beautifully . The skirt is smothered with the most sumptuous cascading roses in the most opulent shades of red ,this dress looks as thought it has been made from tulle and silk and when u move the dress flows with you . It’s a dress that will take your breath away and is worth every penny , every women deserves to feel like a princess once in a while and with this I can guarantee you will do.

Santa Clause is coming to town.

Well it’s that time of the year again. People are dusting off the christmas decorations, the trees are being trimmed and we are spending copious amounts of money on things other just don’t need. But on the plus side comes lots of parties and celebrations, occasions to enjoy and times to remember. Sitting snuggly here in front of the fire with all my presents wrapped the cooking almost done except for the big day and my cards all made and sent. I sip on my glass of wine and wonder what I will be wearing to the office christmas do or to that party I am attending in the new year. With the onslaught of the festivities one needs to have that perfect number to wear for special occasions and so over the next week and a bit I will present to you some choices of great outfits both formal and more informal that would wonderful for these occasions. The first outfit is for the more formal of occasions and a great colour in time for winter. Please take a look and enjoy. Would love to hear if any of you have the perfect outfit for that New Years party.

Gifts Aplenty – G Field

Now I don’t know anyone around second life or even real life that does not enjoy a great and high quality gift from their favorite designers. I know I sure do. But the winter season is still here and I intend to milk it for all it is bloody worth. I can’t deny that the new season is going to be soon upon us but I want to send the winter season off with a bang and really make sure I get my money’s worth. Too many times do I purchase winter season outfits and see them taking up precious space in my inventory as they are never worn or used again until the time comes that I clean out my inventory and suddenly find them.

I know that I’m not the only one that this occurs to but this happens especially often with group gifts that I recieve on a daily basis and never have the time or bother to open and take a look. This is such a shame for those awesome gifts that end up being thrown aside and the talent used to create them goes to waste. But one of my new years resolutions was to change this around and make this a new day. I recently recieved some awesome group gifts from “G Field” and if you have never been here I urge you all to stop by and take a peek at their great designs and amazingly cheap prices that makes a great wardrobe affordable for anyone! I hope that you all enjoy your gifts and know that not all freebies are for noobs! [Winks]

Oh So casual chic

Well today was a  pretty slow day. I’m sure we’ve all had one of those moments in our lives when we have absolutely no idea what to do with ourselves and you can’t even find the energy to really veg out on the computer or in front of your television set. Well that’s what I was feeling like today and so my boyfriend really tried to get my hopes up by taking me out shopping and sharing some of his new spots. Needless to say I didn’t really find anything suitable to my tastes until my friend Rev hooked me onto this store Zenith. I decided to give it a try after she promised that I would be ready to buy out the entire store the minute I stepped foot in there and since I’ve only ever felt like that with Leezu’s designs I had to take up the challenge and take a peek.

While I didn’t get the insane urge to drop all my lindens on the outfits in the store but I did find a few pieces that really tempted me to pinch my wallet and make it whine a bit. But I chose a really cute and flirty dress and decided to really punk it up just a bit without going over the top with some sheer fishnet tights and some hot buckle boots from G Field that sales the greatest footwear for such affordable prices that I encourage everyone I see now to go check it out and get at least one pair. This is a major steal!
