Clothing for the more discerning customer.

Already Established as an African Home Decor Designer, Cococurious MacBain is now setting the scene with her new line of women’s clothing. Coco has been on Second Life now for two years and is taking the game by storm with her beautiful designs. Her store, named Gemini Concepts Clothing is described as affordable clothing for the mature SL woman. One of our newer models Dreamybrneyed Fairey interviewed the illustrious owner and this is what she found out about this up and coming designer.

DF: WHEN DID YOU PREMIERE YOUR FASHION LINE?
CM:The Summer of 2010

DF: WHO (IF ANYONE) INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER?
CM: A Good friend Woo Nitely inspired me with her stylish dresses and we were suppose to begin “Gemini Concepts” before she had to leave SL for RL demands.

DF: WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR STYLE OF FASHION?
CM: I create clothing that I would wear in RL and clothing that compliments a womans look without being too overly revealing. Most of the clothing I have seen drips SEX and leaves nothing to the imagination. Sometimes more rather then less can be just as Sexy .

DF: WHO ARE YOUR TARGET CLIENTS?
CM : As a “mature SL woman” I began targeting the mature older ladies of SL, however, women from all age groups, races and economic status have shopped at my store . Gemini Concepts is for all women.

DF: WHAT ARE YOUR ULTIMATE GOALS AS A DESIGNER?
CM:Quality at an Affordable Price. I enjoy doing Custom work. With an idea, I have found that I can let my imagination create something beautiful for my customers at their request which is a one of a kind design.

DF:WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR PRODUCT LINE GOING HERE ON SL?
CM:Presently working on offering my Clothing as an affiliate vendor in order to get my work out to many more places all over SL.

DF:ANY WORDS OF ADVICE FOR OTHER DESIGNERS ATTEMPTING TO DO WELL HERE IN SL?
CM:Go with what you feel. Create things that you would like to wear. There is nothing in my clothing line that I would not wear. Remember, just like in real life everyone is not going to like everything you create, but you will be surprised at the ppl that have the same taste and style that you do. Never stop learning. A critic is a good thing.

Coco is an approachable designer who takes her business here on sl seriously. Although she is just starting her line of clothing she is quickly becoming a known name within the designer community. Located on the Island of Lost Dreams, CocoCurious Macbain has certainly found her dream here on sl and is definitely an up and coming designer to watch.

An opportunity to do some vendor and media work with Identite

A good opportunity for new models and trainee models alike – best of luck.

Hello beautiful girls!

We will be soon opening our Shapes store ‘IDENTITÉ’ and we need girls with or without experience for Graphic purposes. The work consists in posing for us and being our releases models in our vendors, media and merchandise inside and outside our store. We are a team of Graphic designers in RL and are in this platform since 2007 (with our other avatars). We also work with skins, clothes, sculpted objects and shoes and owned a skins and fashion store last year named Photon.

What the model earns by posing to us?

We arent offering payment in Lindens or accessories once we are working only with Shapes at this moment. The payment is our offer of a mini portfolio , consisting of 3 to 5 pics only ABSOLUTELY FREE as a courtesy and way to say thank you for your time. The pictures will be retouched using our Graphic Design knowledge and experience in graphic softwares and will be given full perms to the model and also will be posted in our stores Blog as divulgation material of our releases and also your work as a model.
It’s a good opportunity to the beginners who need professional pictures for a portfolio, to start with a good quality material and without paying anything! Come and show your beauty to our cameras!

Whats the minimum we need from you?

We need you to have good quality skins of ‘not so old stores skinlines’, for example (those ones that are in permanent sale in a store and looks too old and “Ive already seen it”) we don’t want freebie items at all, because we will be working with ‘Style Notecards’ and will need your full look information as where you bought your skin and clothes. Yes, we need you to have some cool clothes too. You dont need to have thousands of skins and/or outfits though. In each new release we will be announcing whats the model profile we are looking for. For example: models to pose with top model Shape and able to show us an ‘Avant Garde’ outfit. You will be requested to show us what you have in your wardrobe.

So girls, your beauties will be shown with your own personality, except for the fact you will be wearing our Shapes, which we will be gifting you with. Shapes will be given no Mod. You will be asked to match clothes and will be selected after a short selection. Don’t worry everything will be as fast as possible and you will get professional pics and divulgation in exchange!

If you got interested or have any more questions please send a notecard to Mellanie Adamski

hugs ♥

Lelutka Goodies – Gotta Love it

Now I’m sure that everyone loves to get free goodies from their favorite designers. I mean not only having quality but getting it for no cost to you?? What more can you ask for?! I’m also fairly certain that everyone received a ton of great free items, gifts, great dollarbies, etc. over the christmas and new year holidays. If you didn’t think you weren’t in the right groups and need to get with a friend to fix that asap! Now as a self certified fashionista I love to shop as much as the next girl but even more than shopping I love shopping and finding that bargain! So I was minding my own when what seemed to drop unexpectedly into my lap? These wonderful gifts from lelutka that I just fell in love with the minute I got dressed.

Now I rarely wear gowns except for those special occasions or at a ballroom but these outfits are just so fabulous that I ended up wearing them all through the day! I encourage everyone to join the Lelutka group to get updates and free gifts that are given out periodically. No matter what your style is you can’t deny the quality and sensuality of these gowns. I admit that my favorite of the two is Lelutka- Constricted (first gown) because it gives off that romantic period feel and the corset brings great attention to your waist and adds height and slims you down. The way it nips you in the waist like a lover’s caress just makes it feel luxurious and expensive. The skin I’m wearing was also free from Glance in the Peace On Earth Hunt (ended) but it’ll be back next year so keep on the look out!

Outfits:
Lelutka Ultra Constricted/Romantic (group Gift)
Lelutka Ultra Cylinder Pink (Group gift)
Skin: Glance Adriana Gold (Peace On Earth Hunt)
Hair: Truth Amy Jane (Dollarbie) (1st outfit)
Hair: Truth Dakota Blacks (2nd outfit)
Accessories: Paper Couture Faceted Dark Garnet

FAQ’s….My Answers (continued)

4. I want to join an academy to get formal training but how do I make sure that they are not a scam that will run off with my money?

Gawd that’s the worst. There are so many scams in SL because everyone wants a quick buck and it’s hard to know the legitimate companies out there but it’s not impossible! If you have a school or schools in mind be sure to drop by their location to check out the grounds. Take a look at their application (don’t fill it out yet) and the classes they are offering and the topics that it covers. Talk to the owners and/or instructors about the course and how intensive it is, how does the scheduling go, do they have any post graduate help, etc. Another good idea is to ask for a few alumni of their academy and/or current students to get their take on things and their experience with it. Agency Report is also a great resource tool to see reviews of that school or program to make sure you are getting your money’s worth.

5. I’m looking for an agency to sign with, how do I know what to look for or which ones are the right ones to join?

This is actually a very simply answered question albeit a long one. As I said above talk to the staff and models that are signed with that agency. Take a look at Agency Report to get reviews, things can be quite revealing on that site and it’s a gold mine of information. Be sure to check out how long they have been open but also how active they have been. What have they done recently- shows that they have put on, jobs that they have gotten models, etc. Visit their agency in-world to take a look around- a lot can be said to how much care is put into their building and location.

6. Do models make a lot of money in SL?

Hmm…how best to answer this question of yours…How about I get all the rest of the models to say it with me: No Way in Hell! You’ve heard me say it before and I’ll say it for those in the back with cotton in their ears, you will not make a ton of money being a model in second life- it’s a fact of life. Whether you get paid in L or items depends on the agency and their budget and revenue. It can take quite a bit to run an agency- paying staff, tier fees, advertising, (maybe models). And well established models will tell you that you can get paid anywhere from 0 (the outfits that you wear) to 1K per show, photo shoot, or in-store modeling.

7. Why do we need tons of skin to be a good model?

I’m assuming that if you asked this question then you are REALLY to not only this industry but SL as well. If you haven’t noticed by now, skin in SL comes in varying shades and make up options- facial hair for men- so you have to choose several skins to get a variety of make up to fit the outfits that you wear. For instance, you do not want to wear a sunny yellow dress with a pale-as-computer-paper goth skin. That may be your every day look but it won’t work for that particular outfit so you have to change things up. It’s just like wearing your hair up with an elegant gown- it accentuates the design you’re wearing. So it’s necessary to have at least 5 skins in your inventory 10 to 20 is better. But we all know how expensive those things can be so buy wisely and I suggest buying ones that you can use for many different outfits and save the eccentric looks for later when you actually need them if you are on a budget.

7. Is there really a big deal with using AO poses and static poses on the runway?

Okay…Ao poses are cute for the runway but bad for photos which is why a lot of models choose to use static poses instead. There are always photographers at runway shows snapping pictures so you don’t want to get caught in the middle of your AO pose doing something very awkward that ruins the photo. I tend to use AO poses rarely or very discreetly, choosing posses with a lot of time between transitions. My advice is: Choose wisely!

Well I hope that these questions have cleared up a few misconceptions for those that are looking to be a model or had some confusion over this industry or even how to begin their career. I wish you all the best of luck!

Two Sides of the Fashion Coin (Part 4)

light and darkI have my thoughts to eliminate any problems between designers and models, or at least improve communication. One such solution would be to have that model take a picture of what they will be wearing and exactly how they will be wearing it in a show and the designer would say what they would like changed and what is okay. This eliminates any last minute problems and unnecessary situations or miscommunications that could be avoided at the last minute. Also, a model is paid to do a job. You may not get the perfect designer you would like to work with who has the greatest bed-side manner but you have to learn to deal with the different types of personalities that will be presented to you on a daily basis in this industry. We’re all adults and we should be able to deal with it without much drama.

Designers, if a model doesn’t wish to compromise to your vision and you are paying them good money for their services, terminate their contract. It’s as simple as that. Again, I know I may sound harsh but this is not a sugarplum fairy kind of industry where everyone is oh-so-nice and accommodating. It’s a business, so run it like one. Just say that it’s nothing personal but I’m looking for a flexible model to see my vision for my clothing realized. Ask for your product and payment back and if they refuse then you have a reason to get upset. This is also to the models- taking their merchandise and money for a job that you never did gives them ammo to smudge your reputation. It doesn’t matter if it’s not destroyed and people still work with you. There will be those that will listen and see that your work ethic is not up to their standards and you will find yourself lost out on a potential client/employer. That’s something you don’t want. Designers, if a model does this to you, then you have every right to complain to the agency that they are signed with for their behavior and lack of ethics in my opinion.

Every side has their individual rights, designers and models alike. It’s only a question of where one ends and the other begins. What is your personal or professional boundary? Have a question or opinion to share on this thought provoking topic? Then please feel free to share. Just know that I have tried to be completely unbiased in my article and show both sides of the argument and industry as I hope you have seen and understood. [Smiles]

Two Sides of the Fashion Coin (Part 2)

light and darkShould the designer have to ask and request this of their model nicely and sweetly? It’s a preferred situation, but it doesn’t mean that the designer has to explain their every action and thought to the model on their vision for their clothing. If it gets to the point that they are outright rude- when I say rude I don’t mean just abrupt, but insultingly rude- then that is certainly taking it past an acceptable professional boundary. But having to say, “Oh will you please do this and please do that?” seems a bit much sometimes especially if that model is working for the designer. It would be akin to a business owner asking his/her manager to please hire more staff, to please do his/her work in the allotted time. Does a manager ask why they have to do their job or follow a direction by their boss? I haven’t seen that happen overmuch in my experience.

Now there is certainly a sense of professional courtesy that everyone feels that they are owed and they would definitely prefer that. In a perfect world it would be such, but we don’t live in that perfect world. You will most likely have to deal with difficult personalities. There are some people that just may not be a people-person or have a lot of tact. Oh well, those are the breaks- especially in the fashion industry. Let me make this clear. We are talking about the FASHION INDUSTRY- a world filled with oversized egos, plenty of attitude, and an over abundance of confidence. You will run into a designer that thinks they are “the shit” and you will have to work with them. You will have to compromise and bite your tongue if they aren’t super nice to you with a cherry on top explaining their every thought process to you. It’s the way the world works. You have to do it in real and I have no idea why people thought it would be any different in second life. You have to bite your tongue when your employer tells you to do something or else you would lose your job. What’s the difference here?

Through the Eyes of a Budding Model (Part 2)

And so as I hopped from store to agency to academy and back to stores, I gained tiny tidbits of information before putting them all together to help in my understanding of the industry as a whole. I didn’t get much help from models when I first began, nothing but the cold shoulder and “Sorry, I can’t help you.” or “Sorry, I’m busy at the moment, try BOSL (or some other group)”. As I continue to coach my friend through her budding career I can see once again the struggle of the average beginning and working model out there and it just reminds me of my roots. When you don’t have the funds to buy a new outfit or better hair where do you turn to? What should you do next?

I’ve seen many women that believe that spending more on a product makes it high quality. It’s a mantra that one can hear in SL and RL alike. Why this myth continues to dominate fashion culture of both worlds, I will never understand but I am here to break the mold. It’s not how much money you have, it’s how you spend it! I have yet to spend over 1K on an outfit and I’m not about to start now even if my modeling career is growing, and I don’t believe that others should either. Hell, I’ve seen men and women spend thousands of L$ on their avatar and looked just as messed up as when they started, sometimes even more so! Now if you want and you have the money to burn, it’s up to you of course, but I would advise against it.  But I do advise all models to invest in their avatar, just don’t go bankrupt doing it. If you think you won’t spend any L$ becoming a model then I must disabuse you of that now and apologize if I misled you. There is no way that anyone can make it into the business if they aren’t willing to invest money in themselves. Like every other marketing business in the world- and it is marketing because you are marketing your avatar to your clients to get a job- you have to put money in to it going. You have to recycle your funds back into your business to see it grow. In other words, you have to spend money to make money. If you aren’t willing to invest in yourself, then why would someone else invest in you? Think about it.
