Ranena Olivier took to designing and creating garments for SL towards the end of 2008 and took to it quickly! *No purchase required, a free RiFi outfit can be found at the foot of the contest sign in our main store.*

PURPOSE OF THIS CONTEST: Well, truthfully, promotion for RiFi, but also, as a former aspiring model myself, I realize how important self promotion and things to brag about are! So, with that in mind, I’ve focused this contest on the very personal relationship between you (the model) and the product you are showing off (the RiFi outfits). Out and About in a RiFi is all about the beauty you create with your meticulous care of yourselves and your wardrobe. Your professionalism and your dedication. It’s also about promoting YOU along with RiFi! So, the bulk of the prizes are centered around promoting the “Winner”, wearing xyz RiFi outfit.

*THIS IS NOT A POPULARITY CONTEST. A panel of judges (“who” may change from month to month), professionals in the modeling and fashion industries, will review, critique and select the winner each month!!!*

September’s Judges include staff from INFINITE MODELS, INC. (Infinite Magazine)!

WHAT YOU WIN:

to speak!!! When the next winner is announced, you will relinquish your crown (until
next time if you choose) for her turn.

8. You will be invited to model at our store, on either of the 2 runways (1st or 2nd floors),

Tripping into Fall…

SemiCasualThe Outfit: Armidi’s Gisaci Classic Boucle Ash Sweater, Journey Tweed Slacks, Plum Mimi Coat from LeLutka, Au Di Leather Belt, Athena Pearl earrings from Caroline, Diamond Pendant Necklace (Armidi), Armidi’s Daila Pump, and Zuri from Diversity Hair.

The fall season is here and summer wear is out so it was about time for me to get into the mood of things by going out to spice up my wardrobe with a few choice items that just screamed Autumn and Fall. It took me a while to find these pieces or rather to find pieces that fit together so well- two days to be exact [laughs]- but I pulled it off in record time I think. At times I can take up to weeks to complete a new look because I can never make up my mind and am always flipping back and forth to make the best possible look with what I have. As a model I’m very nearly always broke- yes you heard me. Models are broke. We do not make bank in this industry and if I popped your bubble then I guess it’s for the best so that you didn’t walk around with those misguided delusions anymore. But back to my shopping hunt of the past few days.

I’m not a fall type of person, never have been really and I couldn’t tell you why. Maybe it’s the small subtleties of this  period in the season that I didn’t understand on how to incorporate with my own style. I’m not very subtle but I figured it was time to learn something new. I’m an extremist to the core- hot or cold, sad or happy, loving or hating your guts [although I rarely hate people. hehe]- so the fall fashions took me time to learn and to catch on. Yes that’s right; This fashion diva you see before you didn’t know diddly squat about fall fashion sense or how to work this season and it was something I had to learn. So to all those that say that a sense of fashion is something you’re born with well I can tell you here and now that you’re wrong. Women do serious research into their outfits and it’s tiring to hear men and even some women say that they just can’t do it. It’s not that they can’t, it’s that they won’t put the time and effort into it. It can take me days to pick out one outfit and then the small pieces like jewelry, hair and shoes to complete it. So if you think you have no fashion, don’t be discouraged lovelies; there’s hope for you yet!

I knew that I wanted to go for a fall look and I decided not to look at other fashion blogs or talk to anyone else and test myself on whether or not I could pull it off from the things I have learned thus far in this industry. I think I did pretty well to be honest! I started off with a nice pair of slacks- I knew that I wanted to have a dressy casual look that didn’t involve me twirling in a skirt so I found these wonderfully detailed slacks from Armidi. While I was there I decided to take a look around and see what inspiration I could come up with from the various designs painting the walls- or rather the website in my case (I HATE Armidi lag- I compare it to the anti-christ. hehe). As I browsed around I came across this great Ash sweater that hit the tweed slacks just right. I was tempted to go with a gold tone to match the shoes I had in mind but I couldn’t find a toned down version of the one they had so I went with this. The shirt was a bit high waisted but coupled with the belt to hide that little misfortune and a crisis was diverted. [Grins]

Now that I had the basics of my look it was time to head out and add the final details that would just completely make the look. I looked through their jackets but couldn’t find anything that really suit so I moved on to the smaller details. And that’s when I came across these marvelous gold pumps that I just had to have- mainly because I need to update my shoe inventory and it went perfectly with the image I was trying to replicate in my mind. The necklace is a casual piece and the silver matches the color of my hair band. After hours and half a day of searching I came across this beautifully designed coat from LeLutka and I had completed my goal. This is a great look to kick off the fall season and you could even add a nice black or gold purse to it to cap everything off and give it a bit extra flavor.

Two Sides of the Fashion Coin (Part 2)

light and darkShould the designer have to ask and request this of their model nicely and sweetly? It’s a preferred situation, but it doesn’t mean that the designer has to explain their every action and thought to the model on their vision for their clothing. If it gets to the point that they are outright rude- when I say rude I don’t mean just abrupt, but insultingly rude- then that is certainly taking it past an acceptable professional boundary. But having to say, “Oh will you please do this and please do that?” seems a bit much sometimes especially if that model is working for the designer. It would be akin to a business owner asking his/her manager to please hire more staff, to please do his/her work in the allotted time. Does a manager ask why they have to do their job or follow a direction by their boss? I haven’t seen that happen overmuch in my experience.

Now there is certainly a sense of professional courtesy that everyone feels that they are owed and they would definitely prefer that. In a perfect world it would be such, but we don’t live in that perfect world. You will most likely have to deal with difficult personalities. There are some people that just may not be a people-person or have a lot of tact. Oh well, those are the breaks- especially in the fashion industry. Let me make this clear. We are talking about the FASHION INDUSTRY- a world filled with oversized egos, plenty of attitude, and an over abundance of confidence. You will run into a designer that thinks they are “the shit” and you will have to work with them. You will have to compromise and bite your tongue if they aren’t super nice to you with a cherry on top explaining their every thought process to you. It’s the way the world works. You have to do it in real and I have no idea why people thought it would be any different in second life. You have to bite your tongue when your employer tells you to do something or else you would lose your job. What’s the difference here?

Through the Eyes of a Budding Model (Part 2)

And so as I hopped from store to agency to academy and back to stores, I gained tiny tidbits of information before putting them all together to help in my understanding of the industry as a whole. I didn’t get much help from models when I first began, nothing but the cold shoulder and “Sorry, I can’t help you.” or “Sorry, I’m busy at the moment, try BOSL (or some other group)”. As I continue to coach my friend through her budding career I can see once again the struggle of the average beginning and working model out there and it just reminds me of my roots. When you don’t have the funds to buy a new outfit or better hair where do you turn to? What should you do next?

I’ve seen many women that believe that spending more on a product makes it high quality. It’s a mantra that one can hear in SL and RL alike. Why this myth continues to dominate fashion culture of both worlds, I will never understand but I am here to break the mold. It’s not how much money you have, it’s how you spend it! I have yet to spend over 1K on an outfit and I’m not about to start now even if my modeling career is growing, and I don’t believe that others should either. Hell, I’ve seen men and women spend thousands of L$ on their avatar and looked just as messed up as when they started, sometimes even more so! Now if you want and you have the money to burn, it’s up to you of course, but I would advise against it.  But I do advise all models to invest in their avatar, just don’t go bankrupt doing it. If you think you won’t spend any L$ becoming a model then I must disabuse you of that now and apologize if I misled you. There is no way that anyone can make it into the business if they aren’t willing to invest money in themselves. Like every other marketing business in the world- and it is marketing because you are marketing your avatar to your clients to get a job- you have to put money in to it going. You have to recycle your funds back into your business to see it grow. In other words, you have to spend money to make money. If you aren’t willing to invest in yourself, then why would someone else invest in you? Think about it.

Through The Eyes of a Budding Model (Part 1)

As I was listening to a friend and employee of mine discuss their modeling dreams and aspirations, I came to a shocking realization. I have forgotten the struggle it is for new models in the industry and how hard it was for myself to enter this business. Now of course, if you have the funds, fashion sense, and scoop on where to shop for high quality clothing then you have a point above the rest in this exhausting yet exhilarating rat race we call modeling. With this epiphany I decided to take her under my wing and show her the ropes. When I first began, I had no help, no mentor, no one at my side giving me free pointers and knowledge. I would search high and low to understand all there was about the business and all that it really took to become a model, but there was always that price tag attached- a price that was way to rich for my budgeting blood.

I would hop from store to store, stocking up on various items of clothing for different occasions- business, formal, casual, skirts, pants, winter, summer, lingerie, etc. I didn’t understand the point of getting several skins that I would probably never use or various shapes when I was happy with the one I had. I didn’t know why there weren’t as many busty models out there in the industry or understand the real purpose behind that reason. So I set off blindly down alley after alley and profile stalked every model I came across to find out any tips I could. I looked at their picks on good places to shop and also bought several in-world magazines to read up on current fashion news when I came across BOSL, a godsend if there ever was one. It was a beginning of a career…(to be continued)
