Preakness favourite, Barbaro, pulls up injured

The favourite going in to the race, Barbaro, showed nerves and skittishness before the race. It first broke through the magnetic lock in a false start—a feat requiring considerable strength. Then it pulled up lame near the beginning of the race, favouring its right rear leg. The jockey, Edgar Prado, gently eased the horse out of the race when he felt its gait falter. The horse, sweating heavily, was surrounded by a concerned ring of handlers, then taken off the field in a horse-sized ambulance.

Is this when it happened?

Dr. Larry Bramlage, the attending veterinarian for the race, said Barbaro suffered a fracture above and below the ankle, “It’s a serious fracture. This will require pretty major surgery.”

Some of the remaining horses streak for the finish.
