 If challenging the legitimacy of an election is tantamount to fascistic disinformation, Democrats have been running the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda for the past five years.

Let’s face it: Greene is a rank amateur at playing the Nazi card. We have been drowning in reductio ad Hitlerum.

“Don’t compare Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler. It belittles Hitler,” noted a Washington Post op-ed. “I’m beginning to see what happened in Germany,” said four-time Godwin’s law champion Jim Clyburn. Jerry Nadler is no slouch on the matter, either.

Is Barack Obama white? Well, according to the NY Times, the answer has to be "yes."

Referring to an article in the NY TYimes about an american Nazi, Tony Hovater.  Follow the logic:

Oddly enough, though, what is not incensing anyone is the Times making it okay to deny Obama his only actual accomplishment — being America’s first black president.

“Mr. Hovater was incensed by the media coverage of the Trayvon Martin shooting, believing the story had been distorted to make a villain of George Zimmerman, the white man who shot the black teenager,” Fausset matter-of-factly writes.

Did you see what the Times did there? In order to continue to fuel the lie that a white man killed Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman, the Hispanic man who shot Martin in self-defense, is blithely referred to as “the white man who shot the black teenager.”

Here are the facts:

Yes, George Zimmerman’s father is white.

Now meet Gladys Zimmerman, George’s mother. She is a first-generation immigrant from Peru. She is Peruvian, which means she is Hispanic, which means George is Hispanic. George looks Hispanic and correctly identified himself as Hispanic when he registered to vote — as a Democrat. According to George’s brother Robert, George voted for Barack Obama in 2008.

In other words, it was not a white man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin in self-defense, it was a Hispanic, Democratic, Barack Obama supporter.

But the fiction our corrupt media continues to spread, and for obvious reasons, is that Zimmerman is white. The only problem with this fiction is that — when you lay that template over Barack Obama, born of a white mother and black father — the former president comes up white.

Richard Fausset appears to be a white man. So what you have here is a white man stripping a Hispanic man of his racial identity. “A Voice of Hate” indeed.

Now, let us try to imagine if Tony Hovater and his ilk began to matter-of-factly and incorrectly refer to Obama as white, if they began to question whether or not Obama truly deserves his place in history as America’s first black president.

What would the left’s argument be to stop them? With the imprimatur of no less than the editorial standards of the New York Times on the side of the Obama Is White Campaign, nothing could stop them. The New York Times built that.

What you won't learn in the press: the Nazis were Socialists and hated capitalism

The Big Lie Press would have you believe that the Nazis were right wing.  It's a great example of the Big Lie.  They were Socialist, lie Bernie Sanders and so many in academia, the press and the media.

On the contrary, it’s a racially charged, dehumanising expression of class contempt by well-connected white people, and some non-whites, for the wrong kind of white people: bad whites; unthinking whites; the dim or undeserving poor; or what used to be known, in times when vile elitism at least had the decency to be honest, as ‘the underclass’....

When commentators talk about ‘low-information white people’, and those obsessed with gun rights, and those who aren’t sure about immigration, do you think they’re talking about the rich white guy in a suit in Florida who voted Trump? Please. We know very well who they’re talking about. They’re talking about the same people who ... are the objects, not the subjects, of every modern political initiative, be it ‘nudge’ policy, the nanny state, or education schemes on how to have sex, how to raise children, how to treat women, and basically how not to be scum. They’re talking about those people. Them. Those whites. The other whites. The inhabitants of the Dark Heart of America, the gruff speakers and unhealthy eaters of the north of England. The insensitive, the ungrateful, the unlearned. Oh for the honesty of the old elitists, who said what they meant: the racially inferior, morally inferior underclass. That’s who they’re talking about.

For all the hysterical talk about Trump being a Nazi, the real believers in the "superman,"  the "master race"  who are here to rule their inferiors, are the mobs in the streets, the demonstrators on college campuses who shout down those who have the "wrong" ideas, the reporters and editorial writers who lined up with Hillary to defeat Trump because he gave voice to the "underclass."

Man Arrested in Scotland for Facebook Posts About Refugees

Police in Scotland said that a man had been held under the Communications Act, which bans “grossly offensive” and “menacing” posts on online platforms.

The Facebook posts in question, which were not released to the media, allegedly concerned comments about Syrian refugees from Rothersay, on the Scottish Island of Bute, where several refugee families have settled as part of the UK government’s settlement program.

A spokesman from the the Dunoon police station in Argyll said, “I hope that the arrest of this individual sends a clear message that Police Scotland will not tolerate any form of activity which could incite hatred and provoke offensive comments on social media.

Nazis did not become popular by promising to start world War 2, and lose.  He promised jobs and the restoration of pride.  The Communists didn't promise mass starvation, the Gulag and show trials. They promised food, land and the end of war.  Totalitarians always put a veneer of "goodness" over their demand for power.  This is the way the world works.  And to have this done in Europe is an ominous sign.

And in this country, Twitter is doing its best to swing the election for Democrats in 2016 with the tactic of "shadowbanning."

Rumours that Twitter has begun ‘shadowbanning’ politically inconvenient users have been confirmed by a source inside the company, who spoke exclusively to Breitbart Tech. His claim was corroborated by a senior editor at a major publisher.

According to the source, Twitter maintains a ‘whitelist’ of favoured Twitter accounts and a ‘blacklist’ of unfavoured accounts. Accounts on the whitelist are prioritised in search results, even if they’re not the most popular among users. Meanwhile, accounts on the blacklist have their posts hidden from both search results and other users’ timelines.

For weeks, users have been reporting that tweets from populist conservatives, members of the alternative right, cultural libertarians, and other anti-PC dissidents have disappeared from their timelines.

JANE MAYER AND THE NEW YORK TIMES DIVE INTO THE GUTTER

Recent media reports have highlighted a series of false and inaccurate claims about Koch made by Jane Mayer in a book that will be released later this month. As we have told the media, we declined to participate in her book and have not read it. If its content is anything like Ms. Mayer’s previous comments about the Koch family, Koch Industries, or the Kochs’ political involvement, then we expect to have deep disagreements and strong objections with her interpretation of the facts and their sourcing.

Of the many false and inaccurate claims that have leaked out so far, the implication that Fred sympathized with one of the most tyrannical regimes in history is reprehensible and represents the lowest form of journalism. Ever since the New York Times reported on this allegation, we have conducted an extensive archival search to collect the facts and share them with you. We firmly believe that you deserve to know the truth about the history of the company you represent.

Between 1928 and 1934, Winkler-Koch Engineering handled more than 500 projects. Of these, 39 involved signed contracts to build cracking units. One of those units was included in a refinery in the port area of Hamburg, Germany, built for Foreign Oil Co. of Boston. During this period, Winkler-Koch worked on hundreds of other international projects, including work in England, Scotland, France, Canada, Romania, the Soviet Union, Persia and India. Winkler-Koch also worked on similar projects throughout the United States, including in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Wyoming, Illinois and Ohio.

Winkler-Koch’s contract with Foreign Oil was signed on Sept. 8, 1933, and the refinery became operational March 23, 1935. That signing was nearly six years before Germany invaded Poland. Meanwhile during that same period, many iconic U.S. companies were doing business in Germany, including Coca-Cola, General Motors, Ford and IBM. While this was Winkler-Koch’s one and only project in Germany, some of those companies continued to do business in Germany throughout World War II.

Simply put, this cracking unit was just one element in the composition of a single refinery. To state that Fred Koch was “hired to build the third-largest refinery in the Third Reich, a critical industrial cog in Hitler’s war machine” is an outrageous assertion. To cherry-pick one project among hundreds during this time frame and then use it out of context in order to further an agenda-driven storyline is grossly inaccurate.

It is a sad commentary on today’s political and media environment that we even have to address such a false and horrific charge. Many of the other claims made about the Koch family are even more preposterous. Suffice it to say, Fred Koch opposed all forms of tyranny. He was a great man who built a great company. Under the leadership of his son Charles, we are proud to continue his legacy.

The occupation comes to America

The headline in the Virginia Pilot this morning:

How politically correct of them.

What segment of the American people did not immediately think of Muslims committing Jihad when we first heard of the mass murders in San Bernardino?  It’s not as if it’s an isolated case.  The Religion of Peace is keeping track even if the media is averting its eyes.  Or treating it as casually as they do the daily slaughter in the Black neighborhoods of Chicago.   Paris, Beirut, Chad, Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan,  Central African Republic, Yemen  .... this list goes on.  Over 26,000 attacks since 9/11/2001.  In the U.S. we have had a small number of murders and attempted murders.  For those who don't remember:   SEVEN ISLAMIC TERRORIST ATTACKS IN USA IN SEVEN YEARS FOR OBAMA ADMINISTRATION.

But we were warned by our security services and Islamic terrorist have promised to come to our shores.   Yet the Obama Administration and the Liberal establishment continues to tell us how successful they have been and how safe we are.  Feel safe now?

The San Bernardino attack is practically a textbook case of Islamic terror.  

• Mass shooting by hooded killers at a soft target, check.  
• Indiscriminate killing for purposes inspiring fear or terror, check. 
• Nothing personal, you're just part of the crowd, check. 

The only things missing were shouts of “Allahu Akbar” while their victims were being killed and that none of the killers were named Mohammad.    

For years since 9/11 students of Islamic terrorism have been warning about this kind of attack in the U.S.  We have seen similar attacks throughout the world, most recently in Paris.  The presumed target is always soft and a place where people congregate.  Many of the predictions assumed that the target of Muslim Jihadis would be a crowded shopping mall or a sports stadium.  So far, many of the devout Muslims who carry out these attacks in the U.S. are not terribly sophisticated, a beheading here, an ambush shooting there.  This time they were prepared with guns, ammunition and bombs.  They saw an opportunity, a large Christmas party of fellow workers, and decided that this was good enough for a first strike. 

It was only the Liberal part of America, represented here by the members of the media, who wanted fervently to place the blame elsewhere, anywhere, except the obvious.  Building on the narrative that anti-abortion rhetoric was responsible for the shootings in Denver, some hoped it would be a Planned Parenthood attack, noting that an abortion clinic was only 1.3 miles away.  CNN, HuffPo, MSNBC Rush to Connect Shooting to Planned Parenthood.

They “knew” that it had to be some crazed Right Winger.  If he were a Tea Party member who supported Donald Trump it would be icing on the cake and a confirmation of their fervent desires.  A few got ahead of themselves.

Despite the fact that California has enacted all of the gun control laws that a Liberal could love, they immediately began blamed guns rather than the people who used them, calling for more gun laws. 

Despite his recent visit to Paris, Barack Obama spoke one of his classic lies:  “We have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world.”   (Except for the 26,000 since 9/11.  Check out the Religion of Peace website, Barry).

But back in Realville.  Most Americans who were not Left wing ideologues knew that this was terrorism in the name of Islam almost from the start.    Yet even today, the media and other Liberals will not – or dare not – speak the truth.  It's terrorism-that-has-nothing-to-do-with-Islam.   And if you disagree, if you take the devout Muslim Jihads at their word you're a bigot, racist, nativist hater who is afraid of women and little children

I've had a visitor the last few weeks, my older sister.  She was born in the Netherlands and was a teenager when Hitler invaded her country.  She sees many ugly similarities between America and Europe today and those terrible years of occupation.  The Netherlands has a long history of classical Liberalism, Libertarian-ism and soft Socialism.  America’s Pilgrims first came to the Netherlands from England to freely practice their religion.  Soft drugs have been legal in the Netherlands for decades, as is prostitution.  Euthanasia is legal and widely practiced while guns are virtually unavailable to everyone except criminals.  

The Occupation has shaped my sister's views of history and current events.  While stories abound of heroic struggles by extraordinary people against the Nazis in the occupied countries, the vast majority kept silent and tried to get on with their lives.  Few spoke out when the Jews were rounded up and sent to their deaths.  They knew that speaking the truth was dangerous.  In the Netherlands you could be denounced by members of the NSB (National Socialist Beweging) – Dutch Nazi sympathizers.  That kind of mind control is evident in Europe and America today.  That's evident in the Virginian Pilot headline.  People who are not afraid to speak the obvious don't wait for the FBI  to call an act of terrorism for what it is.  Must we be afraid to say what's paralyzingly obvious until a government agency gives us permission?  Or are the editors of the Virginian Pilot really that oblivious to what's going on around them?  

You are not going to get rounded up for expressing your support for the Constitution, or for publicly worrying about Muslim terrorism.  But the threat is there because the Liberal media will savage you.  And if you say it loudly enough, the Obama Justice Department under Loretta Lynch will come calling.  So like a good Dutchman under Nazi occupation, it’s best to keep quiet, to keep your head down and hope that this too shall pass.   

Except this time, there is no America who will liberate you from the occupation.  Because the occupation has come to America.  

Mark Steyn: The Stupidity of Sophisticates

College professors are the stupid sophisticates.

Last week, I swung by the Bill Bennett show to chew over the news of the hour. A few minutes before my grand entrance, one of Bill's listeners had taken issue with the idea that these Supreme Court decisions weren't the end and, if you just got on with your life and tended to your garden, things wouldn't be so bad:

Claudine came on and said that's what Germans reckoned in the 1930s: just keep your head down and the storm will pass. How'd that work out?

David Kelsey writes from the University of South Carolina to scoff at that:

In one corner, we have government recognition of marriage contracts between gays. In the other corner, we have Jews, Catholics, gays, their sympathizes [sic] and other undesirables being put in Nazi concentration camps.

One of these things is nothing like the other, unless you're a lunatic. Maybe the reason conservatives keep "losing everything that matters" is because they really can't tell the difference. Which causes increasing numbers of people to recognize them as lunatics.

Since you call me and Claudine "lunatics", allow me to return the compliment and call you an historical illiterate. If "one of these things is nothing like the other", it's because that's never the choice: It's never a question of being Sweden, say, vs being the Islamic State (although, if you're a Jew in Malmö, they're looking a lot less obviously dissimilar than you might think).

All societies exist on a continuum. Neither Claudine nor I said a word about "concentration camps". But you give the strong impression that that's the only fact you know about Nazi Germany: Nazis = concentration camps, right? No wonder you think everything divides neatly into opposing "corners". In the world as lived, there are no neatly defined corners. Things start off in the corners and work their way toward the center of the room.

Claudine and I were talking about Germany in the Thirties - before the concentration camps and the Final Solution, before millions of dead bodies piled up in the gas chambers. So you need to have an imaginative capacity. It's not clear from your email that you do, but give it a go: Imagine being a middle-class German in 1933. No one's talking about exterminating millions of people - I mean, that would be just "lunatic" stuff, wouldn't it? And you belong to a people that regards itself as the most civilized on the planet - with unsurpassed achievements in literature and music and science. You might, if you were so minded, call it Teutonic Exceptionalism. And you're "progressive", too: you pioneered the welfare state under Bismarck, and prototype hate-speech laws under the Weimar republic. And yes, some of the beer-hall crowd are a bit rough, but German Jews are the most assimilated on the planet. The idea that such a society would commit genocide is not just "lunatic", it's literally unimaginable.

So don't even bother trying to imagine that. Instead try to imagine it's early 1933. The National Socialist German Workers Party is the largest party in parliament and thus President von Hindenburg has appointed its leader, Herr Hitler, as Chancellor - not der Führer, just Chancellor, the same position Frau Merkel holds today. And the National Socialist German Workers Party starts enacting its legislative programme, and so a few weeks later the Civil Service Restoration Law is introduced. Under this law, Jews would no longer be allowed to serve as civil servants, teachers or lawyers, the last two being professions in which Jews are very well represented.

But that wily old fox Hindenburg knows a thing or two. So as president he refuses to sign the bill into law unless certain exemptions are made - for those who've been in the civil service since August 1st 1914 (ie, the start of the Great War), and for those who served during the Great War, or had a father or son who died in action. And the practical effect of these amendments is that hardly any Jew in the public service has to lose his job.

Paul von Hindenburg died the following year, and his amendments were scrapped.

That's Germany's civil service in 1933. What of America's civil service in 2015?

The logic of the 1933 Civil Service Restoration Act is that the German public service will be judenrein. The logic of the 2015 Supreme Court decision is that much of the American public service will be christenrein - at least for those who take their Scripture seriously. That doesn't strike me as a small thing - even if one thought it were likely to stop there.

Bud Norman mentioned this Battering Rams in Wisconsin about the Nazi-syle reign of terror in Wisconsin against those who sided with Scott Walker.

This is America, where a citizen is free to express opinions and participate in politics without fear of retribution. That’s the way it’s supposed to be, but the ideal seems to be slipping away. The diminution of fresh speech is not just a matter of the increasingly confined parameters of polite opinion, enforced by boycotts and restricted career opportunities and the howling of mobs, or even the usual heavy hand of government, such as the harassment of conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service or the politicized prosecutions by the Department of Justice or the extra regulatory scrutiny applied to those businesses donating to the wrong candidates. It has now come to the point that armed agents of the government have been invading homes, seizing property, and bullying ordinary citizens into silence for no reason other than their political beliefs.

If this sounds like the most far-fetched sort of paranoid right-wing fantasy, we’d urge you to read David French’s chilling article, headlined “Wisconsin’s Shame: ‘I Thought it Was a Home Invasion,'” at The National Review. Although there had already been scattered reports about the outrageous “John Doe Investigation” that a renegade prosecutor and a rubber-stamping judge had launched against various groups that supported Gov. Scott Walker’s efforts to reform the state’s collective bargaining laws regarding public sector unions, a fishing expedition which was eventually halted by a higher court that rightly considered it a clear attempt to intimidate the prosecutor’s political opponents into silence, only now are those targeted in the investigation coming forward with stories about doors being broken down with battering rams, computers being confiscated, children being terrified, neighbors being scandalized, and dozens of heavily armed police officers shouting warnings that no lawyers were to be contacted and no was to be told. The descriptions evoke Nazi-era Germany or the Soviet bloc, but it happened in Wisconsin, the birthplace of the “progressive movement.”

Norman notes that even though there has been some coverage of these outrages against innocent citizens exercising their free speech rights, the media - never a supporter of conservatives - is either spiking this story or continues to spread the smears of wrongdoing against Walker and his supporters.  That's why the rogue prosecutors and judges in Wisconsin went ahead with this, the media had their backs.

Via Stacy McCain we find that Belgian insurance companies will not insure Jewish institutions.  Insuring Jews in Europe entails too much risk.  They are a magnet for terror attacks.

Wait, I though we had defeated the Nazis?

Sixty years after the Allies defeated Hitler, why should European Jews have to live with this kind of fear every day? Why should Christian students in Kenya have to fear being shot or beheaded by a gang of bloodthirsty Muslim fanatics? And why should Pamela Geller’s American Freedom Defense Initiative have to fight court battles — and media smear tactics — to run its advertisements in Philadelphia?

You may say that European insurance companies are biased against Jews.  but you may be wrong. Dana leaves a comment:

Businessmen don’t have the luxury of thinking with their hearts; they use cold, hard facts in assessing their decisions, because if they don’t, they are very likely to fail in business. And when businessmen in much-more-liberal-Europe won’t sell insurance to a Jewish kindergarten, because the risk of a terrorist attack is too high, you know that that was the result of a cold assessment of the risks.

So, sixty years later, it's getting risky to be a Jew in Europe.

In the US where Muslims are a smaller part of the population, it's mostly Liberals who have begun the persecution of Jews and Christians.  All across academia Jews are despised and disinvestment in Israel is all the rage.  If you want to get death threats, your business shut down and the media gang up on you, tell the leaders of the the Church of What's happening Now you don't want to participate in a gay wedding, but only if you're Christian.  

The regular people of the US are still firmly opposed to persecuting Jews and Christians, and have contributed nearly a million dollars to the pizza shop family that was hounded by the media and the rest of the Left, but the Ruling Class is working to put a stop to that.

That is how the Holocaust really happened.

As the Nazis were gearing up the Final Solution, the Liberals throughout the world denied anything was going on.   The press gave us "nuance."

Media coverage emphasized distinctions between the radical and moderate Nazis. (Hitler was, of course, a moderate.) Nazi grievances were treated as legitimate. Their crimes were lied about and covered up.

In 1933, the Associated Press’ wire report claimed that the persecution of Jews had already ended. Another wire story headlined “Jew Persecution Over Says Envoy” cited Secretary of State Hull’s relief that the Hitler regime was doing its best to curb further persecution of the Jews.

Hull would later apologize when the Republican Mayor of New York City referred to the Fuhrer as a “man without honor”. Mayor LaGuardia might have been suffering from Fuhrerphobia.

Jewish protests were treated as shrill and baseless alarmism.

“U.S. Investigation Shows No Cause for Protest,” the AP headlined its coverage.

“Notwithstanding assurances given by German government leaders and by Hull that the Nazi excesses against the Jewish race had ceased in Germany, Jewish leaders went ahead with plans for mass protest meetings,” another wire story read. “All requests that these meetings be canceled fell on deaf ears.”

A week before the story, the first official Nazi concentration camp of Dachau had opened.

The media coverage should sound familiar. It’s how Iran’s nuclear buildup is being covered. It’s how Muslim violence against Jews is covered. It’s discussed reluctantly and immediately dismissed. Jews are written off as pests who refuse to listen when Kerry, like Hull, tells them there’s nothing to worry about.

That is how the Holocaust really happened.

Auschwitz just shows us the final stage. It doesn’t show us the sympathy for the Nazis, the willingness of some on the left to see them as allies in overturning the existing system and the anger at the selfishness of the Jews in putting their own desire not to be killed ahead of world peace.

Auschwitz requires more context than just Hitler. It requires that we understand why so many countries and so many world leaders enabled him. And it is not a difficult thing to understand. All we need to do is look at the response to Muslim attempts to kill Jews before and after the Holocaust.

It was easier to appease the Nazis. It is easier to appease the Muslim world. The Jews were not seen as a canary in the coalmine; instead, like the Czechs and then the Poles and then everyone else, they were an obstacle to making a deal with the devil. Today it’s the Nigerian Christians, the Burmese Buddhists and a long list of others around the world including the Jews of Israel who stand in the way of peace.

The Holocaust and the entire war happened because everyone wanted peace with Nazi Germany and refused to accept that Nazism was innately aggressive.

Eichmann envisioned Nazis and Muslims as victims.

“Who are the aggressors here? Who are the war criminals? The victims are Egyptians, Arabs, Mohammedans. Amon and Allah,” Eichmann wrote of the 1956 war.

That's exactly what's happening now. The Jews in Israel are being demonized as the "real Nazis" by the campus Left. When they defend themselves against Arab aggression we are being told that their reaction is "disproportionate," as if Israelis should be killed at the same rate as the Hezbollah attackers.  The professors are going along with it.  The press will deny there's anything going on while demonizing Israelis who want to survive.   And if there is another Final Solution, the press will pretend to be shocked, shocked, and blame the Republicans.  Obama wouldn't mind if the Israel disappeared and Hitler's grand vision came true.  It would make his grand rapprochement with Islam so much easier.

On 16 June 1941, as Hitler readied his forces for Operation Barbarossa, Josef Goebbels looked forward to the new order that the Nazis would impose on a conquered Russia. There would be no come-back, he wrote, for capitalists nor priests nor Tsars. Rather, in the place of debased, Jewish Bolshevism, the Wehrmacht would deliver “der echte Sozialismus”: real socialism.

Goebbels never doubted that he was a socialist. He understood Nazism to be a better and more plausible form of socialism than that propagated by Lenin. Instead of spreading itself across different nations, it would operate within the unit of the Volk.

So total is the cultural victory of the modern Left that the merely to recount this fact is jarring. But few at the time would have found it especially contentious. As George Watson put it in The Lost Literature of Socialism:

It is now clear beyond all reasonable doubt that Hitler and his associates believed they were socialists, and that others, including democratic socialists, thought so too.

The clue is in the name. Subsequent generations of Leftists have tried to explain away the awkward nomenclature of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party as either a cynical PR stunt or an embarrassing coincidence. In fact, the name meant what it said.

Hitler told Hermann Rauschning, a Prussian who briefly worked for the Nazis before rejecting them and fleeing the country, that he had admired much of the thinking of the revolutionaries he had known as a young man; but he felt that they had been talkers, not doers. “I have put into practice what these peddlers and pen pushers have timidly begun,” he boasted, adding that “the whole of National Socialism” was “based on Marx”.

The Left, of course, smears the Right with the term Nazi and the "authoritarian" label:

One of my constituents once complained to the Beeb about a report on the repression of Mexico's indigenous peoples, in which the government was labelled Right-wing. The governing party, he pointed out, was a member of the Socialist International and, again, the give-away was in its name: Institutional Revolutionary Party. The BBC’s response was priceless. Yes, it accepted that the party was socialist, “but what our correspondent was trying to get across was that it is authoritarian”.

In fact, authoritarianism was the common feature of socialists of both National and Leninist varieties, who rushed to stick each other in prison camps or before firing squads. Each faction loathed the other as heretical, but both scorned free-market individualists as beyond redemption. Their battle was all the fiercer, as Hayek pointed out in 1944, because it was a battle between brothers.

Authoritarianism – or, to give it a less loaded name, the belief that state compulsion is justified in pursuit of a higher goal, such as scientific progress or greater equality – was traditionally a characteristic of the social democrats as much as of the revolutionaries.
