Thoughts AFTER Bastille Day…

Yesterday, July 14, was Bastille Day. That was the momentous event of the French Revolution where the mobs stormed the Paris prison housing political prisoners. the ensuing French Revolution was a blood bath that saw thousands killed by mobs in the name of “liberte’, egalite’, fraternite'”.

It has always struck me as notable that the French Revolution would degrade in such a manner and ours did not. Even with the Civil War, America has never backed up from its goal of freedom. France, on the other hand, has had several retreats into monarchy and dictatorship, and lastly, in WW II, surrender and collaboration.

They look at us, and they can but hide their jealousy with arrogance…

911 works too good…

Twice in the last couple of months or so, the 911 system and I
have had “issues”. A while back, early in the workday, Chrissy at the
office dialed up one of the tech’s pagers to make sure it was
working. It beeped. A couple of minutes later, I walked to the
front door just in time to see a Sulphur city police officer
approaching the door, and a second police unit pulled into the parking
lot right after him. Naturally, I opened the door and asked what the
problem was. “We had a 911 call from this address.”

After assuring him that we had no emergencies, he insisted that
they’d had a 911 call. Since by now, me, the two techs and Chrissy were
ALL in the foyer to investigate the commotion, we assured him that
nobody here had dialed 911. Well, almost. the last four digits of the
pager Chrissy dialed were 6-9-1-1. Maybe the system hiccupped?

The response time was great. Our office has TWO donut shops within three blocks…

And then, today: I’m at home after work and I misplace my
cellphone, so I decide to dial it up from my home phone so I can locate
the ring. I do. I find th phone. A few minutes later there’s a vigorous
knock on the door.

I open it to see a deputy sheriff there. He swears that they got a 911
call from this address. I assure him that I and three cats are safe and
I don’t know HOW they got a 911 call. My cell phone number begins
9-1-2…
