Today in History – September 1

1532 – Lady Anne Boleyn is made Marchioness of Pembroke by her fiancé, King Henry VIII. Sort of like a Kennedy going to Congress.

1666Great London Fire begins in Pudding Lane. 80% of London is destroyed. FEMA slow to respond. Bush widely blamed. Sean Penn shows up with Madonna’s old douche bag to fight the fire.

1752 – The Liberty Bell arrives in Philadelphia. Without its famous crack. That comes later.

1799 – Bank of Manhattan Company opens in NYC (forerunner to Chase Manhattan). Immediately starts foreclosing on widows and orphans.

1865 – Joseph Lister performs first antiseptic surgery, insurance refuses to pay for experimental procedure.

1870Franco-Prussian War: Battle of Sedan is fought, resulting in a decisive Prussian victory. Yeah, they captured the French “Emperor” Napoleon III and a 100,000 French soldiers by the next day. I’d say that qualifies as “decisive”.

1901 – Construction begins on New York Stock Exchange. Bodies of the poor and homeless used for mortar.

1914 – St. Petersburg, Russia changes its name to Petrograd. The communists believed in the separation of church and state just like the ACLU, so after the Bolshevik Revolution, the name is changed to Leningrad, because heaven knows, Lenin is more worthy of having a city named after him than Saint Peter or Peter the Great.

1923
– The Great Kanto Earthquake devastates Tokyo and Yokohama, killing about 105,000 people. That’s a conservative estimate.

1939 – World War II: Nazi Germany attacks Poland, beginning the war. Hitler’s not worrying about Russia objecting because he’s already signed a treaty with Stalin to split Poland between the two dictators. As the war progresses, both sides slaughter Poles by the thousands.

1939 – Hitler orders extermination of mentally ill. The dimmocrats would NEVER put anything like this in the ObamaCare bill. The mentally ill constitute one of their major voting blocs and two-thirds of their congressional delegation.

1974
– The SR-71 Blackbird sets (and holds) the record for flying from New York to London in the time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds.

1983 – Cold War: Korean Air Flight 007 is shot down by a Soviet Union jet fighter when the commercial aircraft enters Soviet airspace. All 269 on board die, including Congressman Lawrence McDonald.

1985 – A joint American-French expedition locates the wreck of the RMS Titanic. Yep! there it is, right there! It’s sunk!

  1. 1666 – Isn’t Madonna’s old douche bag Sean Penn?

1983 – My ship (USS Callaghan) spent nearly a month on scene helping with the search for the black box, trying to keep the Russians away from hindering the search effort. Several tense moments.
