Plans for the week

They’ve been made.

After the Monday morning staff meeting, I get on the road to Houston. No, it’s not my station northwest of there, this time I have to go into the belly of the beast, to the corporate Ivory Tower, abode of the decision makers, the movers, the shakers, and the slugs and the hangers-on. It’s not one of my favorite places.

Tomorrow I meet with one of our engineers and we’re supposed to confer with a vendor about equipment to monitor the condition of our big motors while the silly things are running. This is, in my opinion, a Good Thing.

Following that meeting, I have reservations in a a nearby hotel.

Also heading to the Ivory Tower are my two counterparts from the other divisions of this company, guys who have the same function I do, out on the pipeline, up north. These are guys I know by name, and with whom I’ve talked on the phone and emailed. This week we meet face to face and spend a couple of exciting days poring over company standards and procedures and talking about what’s going on, what works, and what doesn’t. This could be fun. There may well be some after-hours socialization and the imbibing of adult beverages.

However, it may not be conducive to good blogging until it’s all over, so if posting is spotty this week, you’ll know what the reason is…

  1. I can recommend a good golf course and Mexican restaurant. Pappas Seafood off I-45 was great. Bedwell and I knocked out two dozen oysters on the half shell. Good stuff. Later.

  2. Sorry I didn’t see this sooner-I was traveling up in Chi-town the last coupla days–nice horizontal snow Sun. night. Try Pico’s Mex Mex on Belaire Blvd, between 59 and 610–more mole than you can shake a tortilla at. Pappa’s Seafood on I-45 near Hobby is decent, so’s Pappa’s BBQ a little further south as I recall, closer to Hobby, by the Gulf Gate Shopping Center.

There’s also the House of Pies, aka, at the original Montrose location, “The House of Guys” due to substantial gay demographic–does not affect the sheer wonderfulness of the amazing array of pies on offer or the other good, basic diner fare. Any man should cowboy up–ain’t no gay gonna get in the way of me gettin’ my 6″ high slice of chocolate meringue pie!

Ifn you’re on the company dime, I’m a fan of the Omni over on the west side of town–beautiful grounds, complete with white and black swans. Restaurant’s not all that great and spensive, unfortunately.
