A considerable number

There must be a bunch of us out here clinging to our Bibles and our guns. I’m actually sort of amazed. I mean, I consider myself to be pretty reactionary when it comes to the assessment of the current state of the nation, but I work in a building full of engineers, pretty sane, well-educated, staid bunch, no the “good ol’ boys and a pickup truck” stereotypes the Left likes to think we are.

Most people know me to be somewhat on the right side of the political spectrum, but in a corporate environment, one is usually well advised not to spend too much time on partisan politics. The closest I came was a Cthulhu for President sticker on my office cabinet.

Therefore, I am amazed at the fact that in the last couple of weeks a couple of my co-workers have come to me, looked back over their shoulders to see who else was around, and began talking about what’s happening in the country.

I’ve gotten a lot of gun questions lately, as in “if I was going to buy a gun…”

I’ve gotten a lot of “do you think it’s all coming apart?”

I even got a “I read about this in pre-war Germany”.

And these aren’t tattooed skinheads or refugees from a short week at the sawmill types. These are guys who have diplomas on their walls. No, I am in no way implying that this is some formidable armed force that will rise up and recover America to her Constitutional greatness. what I AM saying though, is that I’m seeing a level of dissatisfaction and concern that was not even approached in the years of the Clintons.

  1. I think the reality is beginning to surface. Even the inmates are starting to recognize the madness.

  2. For anyone who doubts the anxiety level of our populace, simply go into any of our popular stores, big-box or local, or use the internet and shop for ammunition. There is a scarcity of it out there that truly boggles the mind. Your colleagues are not the only ones displaying a large dose of apprehension. Would that many of those now concerned had the ability to rescind their vote . . .

  3. I had to laugh when I read this one. Apparently I have also garnered a reputation with my co-workers…though I didn’t realize it until I started getting phone calls from people I work with from California to Alabama, “Hey! Do you think xxxx is a good gun?” “I found xxx for $$$, is that a good deal?” I guess another indicator about genetics and family influence???

I have to second “TD”….all of the on-line suppliers for bulk ammunition that I’ve used for years seem to have depleted their stock several months back. You can occasionally still find some of the popular calibers but not often or it is the “way off brand”.

I also agree that a small number of “the anointed one’s” followers are finally beginning to see through the rhetoric….Can we make it until 2012?

  4. 2010 is close enough if we can cut the DEMs edge in the midterm election. If we can limit the support he has in the House and Senate that’ll do until 2012.

  5. My reputation among coworkers has had them asking me about gun purchases, and a few have asked me questions about mixing household chemicals that would get the DHS very interested.

  6. I think we will be exceedingly lucky to make it to 2010 economically. With ALT-A and commercial paper scheduled to start adjusting later on this year, I think things are going to get much worse. And our current Executive leadership has proven to be the epic disaster many predicted they would be.

  7. Several folks have asked me the which do I buy first question: “Rifle, Pistol, or Shotgun?”

I have even invited a few to the range to shoot with the Presbyterian clergy and Elders who show up on Fridays.

  8. ^^

Oh noes!!!! It’s guns and religion combined. The horror, the horror.

I have noticed a similar thing, with different Obama supporters. You talk to them for a while, they get more and more agitated then you hit them with three questions:

Why are we still bailing out corporations? Why are we increasing the national debt by a very large amount? What exactly has changed?

They can’t answer it, they get quiet for about three seconds, and then they wail “BOOOSSHHH was the worst President ever!!!!”

They used to say “Wait, it’s only the first hundred days.” As things wear on though, they realize they’ve been suckered. Soon we’ll see the conspiracy theories circulating. “They” have something on Obama, “the speculators” are controlling the economy, purposefully holding back recovery. If the GOP wins in 2010 then that will be “an obstacle to progress”. Excuses will be made. Their ideas cannot be wrong, there must be evil actors stymieing the natural progress of history.

Funny thing is, if he’d kept the tax cutting, budget balancing, no more bailouts positions of his campaign, I’d be a supporter. Instead he lied, and now the groundwork is laid for major whiplash. I just hope most of it hits the political class and not the country as a whole.

  9. Rifle, pistol or shotgun? I’d go with the shotgun and build from there…but that’s just me :)

  10. I’d go for the pistol first. You can use the pistol to get the others in a pinch.

  11. I just had an offer of a nice little gun for Mother’s Day. I seriously considered it.

I’m not thrilled with how long it’s taking for the supposedly “more intelligent” voters to finally see what’s happening.

  12. I was amazed to find that every Engineer where I works owns at least one gun and many of the managers either do, or are planning on doing so (helped my manager get a CC permit after his wife got a gun a couple of months ago).

  13. And to think, that back when (ten years ago) that this is the kind of melt down we were heading for, because conservatives were too afraid to speak up and confront the ignorant left, . . . well, now, seems like the “chickens are coming home to roost!”

I do speak up when it’s appropriate. And I can quickly cram down any idea that it’s about race, because I voted for Alan Keyes twice and Herman Cain for Senator from Georgia. So, STFU.

The time for being polite to idiots and suffering fools too graciously has now become more than passe; now it’s dangerous.

Fighter pilots know that the greatest advantage for survival is altitude and speed. You can never have either of those factors when you are flying below the radar.

The best defense is a superior offense.

  14. No, I am in no way implying that this is some formidable armed force that will rise up and recover America to her Constitutional greatness.

Not a “formidable armed force”, perhaps, but a group of people who could gum up the works pretty good by simple non-violent resistance. Grey tribe keeps the electricity on. If they decide it’s not worth doing, how many pink tribe engineers are there? A few, but I don’t think there are enough…

  15. The tide will turn when the Stupid People become aware of the great slide into the socialist pit. Soon my precious…

  16. I actually recommend a carbine – but I invite them to try them all before hand.

  17. The most frequent question I get is this: “Is it going to come to bloody violent conflict?” and “Will I have to physically fight for my freedom?” Civil War or some kind of revolution is what’s worrying alot of people. When, in 6 months, Americans have purchased enough guns to fully supply the entire armies of two small nations; it’s understandable that some folks would start worrying what everybody is preparing for.
Or perhaps it’s not that they’re worried about it, but simply want to know when it’s going to start? What event will be the spark?
