red-winged blackbird – morning call
Yesterday’s Phenology: A sudden moment of nice weather. Cloudy all day, and the temperature peaked I think in the upper 60s. Delightful. Noticed a couple of large sized birds flying together above the river early this morning. No idea what they were. Eagles? Possible, but too far away to say.
Song of the day: Tom Waits, Blue Valentines
blackbird on guard
Yesterday’s Phenology: Warmish, but mostly cloudy, which kept it from being hotish, I suppose. Saw the usual birds, and a few interesting bugs that I couldn’t identify, other than to say, coleoptra, probably. One of them may have been a youthful Japanese beetle. I bet.

Red-winged blackbird, looking skeptical
Yesterday’s Phenology: Bright and painfully sunny initially, then a bunch of big clouds moved in, then overcast, then partly sunny. Thought it might rain at some point, but, disappointment, no. Temp in the mid 70s, though warmer in the car. Saw a lot of bald eagles as we drove down river to Maiden Rock, over the river and over the Wisconsin bluffs, and a few herons, and a red-tailed hawk, possibly. Good day for flying, I guess.
Song of the day: Temptations, My Girl, Get Ready
one from the archives, june 2005, a little morning sparkle
Yesterday’s Phenology: Another Pretty Darn Nice Day (PDND). 70s? check, cloudy? check. cool nights? check. Perfect dog walking weather.
Song of the day: Donovan, Sunshine Superman
frosted grass
Yesterday’s Phenology: Blustery! and warmish (30s). The 30 mph winds made it seem like it was a bit cooler than the low 30s. Snowflakes were seen, occasionally, but not enough to say that it was snowing. They were like scouts.
Song of the day: Ravi Shankar, Yehudi Menuhin, Twilight Mood
morning, dogpark
Yesterday’s phenology: A beautiful morning, upper 40s, sunny, a little breezy, and so many leaves were falling, and swirling around, and blowing in piles across the sidewalks and streets. It clouded up a bit in the afternoon, but still very pleasant. I don’t think that red-winged blackbirds migrate, but I haven’t seen any in quite a long time. Perhaps they’ve gone on vacation.
Song of the day: the Rutles, Get up and Go

Yesterday’s Phenology: Perfect Fall Day (PFD). No Observed Phenology (NOP).
