Remarkably few sopranos have excelled in both Verdi and Wagner, as the respective writing styles of these composers are so different. Already an acclaimed Wagnerian, the Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen demonstrates on this gripping all-Verdi album that she has the technique and temperament for both. In “Tu che le vanità” from Verdi’s historical opera Don Carlo Davidsen is vocally imperious, graphically evoking the emotional plight of the French princess Élisabeth de Valois. As Leonora in La forza del destino, Davidsen delivers a fervent reading of the prayer “La vergine degli angeli”, retaining the full, rounded ripeness of her tone even in the quietest moments. “Ritorna vincitor!” from Aida highlights Davidsen’s ability to deliver raw power without roughness, using the thrilling richness of her lower register. Arias from Macbeth and Un ballo in Maschera complete the recital, with conductor Edward Gardner and the London Philharmonic Orchestra lending atmospheric support throughout.
