Musings of a Fashionista

So plaid was big last year.  Obviously.  Everywhere you looked, you would see it. Plaid shorts, plaid skirts, plaid tops, plaid hats.  Wow.  Here’s how to wear it.

How: A solid top or bottom (depending on where you’re wearing it).  Gladiator sandals displaying a perfect pedicure, which preferably matches the shorts.

Where: Out and about.  It’s not for fancy dinners, though.  Go for more of the shopping, gardening, grocery store type trips.

When: Spring and Summer.  It’s not for Winter.

What: Nail art (for a tutorial, go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw1s_mhE0O0), shorts, shirts, bathing suits.  Anything.

The Hunger Games is an awesome book trilogy that I highly recommend.  So of course it’s being made into a movie that many of the book series’ die-hard fans will go see.  Starts as a book series, is made into a movie, launching the stars into the spotlight.

For example, Harry Potter (yes, I love HP, both the books and the movies).  Before HP, Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint were obscure eleven year olds.  Now, Emma Watson is a style superstar, with ads for Burberry and a line from People Tree.

What is my point?  Well, I think that Jennifer Lawrence (who will be portraying Katniss) will reach Kristen Stewart and Emma Watson level fame, just because of her starring role in the Hunger Games movies.

Jennifer’s 20 years old (which some say makes her too old to play 16 year old Katniss) and has already been nominated for an Academy Award.  She’s graced the May issue of Teen Vogue, and has covered W, GQ, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair as well.

Jennifer at the 2011 Oscars.

Jennifer at the BAFTA awards.  This dress is a bit too revealing for me.  I like the color and the corset detail, though.

Jennifer at a website launch.  Look at her hair, it’s curly!  I like it better straight.  She looks good in red, though.

Jennifer at an International Film Festival.  I love the leopard print.

Check out this website for more of Jennifer’s red carpet looks:

all pictures found through Google.  I don’t own any of them.

Floral print is so happy and spring-y.  Floral isn’t hard to wear, either.  In this post I explain how (and where) to wear floral print.

How: Pair it with a solid top, like a tank top or a fitted tee.  Because floral prints usually have a lot of color in them, many colored tops can be worn with them.  Flip flops, sandals or flats are the right choice of shoe.

Where: Dinner, a movie, pretty much anywhere.

When: All season long!  You can pair it with leggings, a sweater and boots in the winter.  In the summer, flip flops and a tank top.

What: Skirts and dresses.  In shorts it’s way too much color (especially if they’re short shorts).  In shirts it’s all right, but you’d probably have a hard time finding a floral shirt.

Ah, the girlishness of the words: “nail polish, makeup, and shoes”.

They can make an outfit look chic and put together.  If you go onto http://www.opi.com/ you can try on nail polish (on a virtual hand).  I think that blues are the it shade of nail polish this summer.  They’re so cool and refreshing!

My favorite shades in the OPI nail polish are “That’s Hot! Pink” and “Teal the cows come home”.

Onto makeup.  Usually I just wear a slick of hot pink lip gloss, but sometimes I wear lipstick.  If I was going out to a movie, I’d wear lip gloss.  Not as fancy, and no one can see if it rubs off.  But if I was going to see a Broadway show or go to dinner, I’d definitely wear some sort of long lasting lipstick.

Shoes.  Many women (and probably some men) are obsessed with shoes.  Yves Saint Laurent, Manolo’s, and Gucci.  The names also make handbags and clothes, of course.  All of those shoes have price tags in the upper 200’s.

Wedges, gladiators, and booties.  Those are the shoe trends for summer/spring 2010.  And of course flip flops.  They’re soooo comfy, and you can just slip on and slip off.

How do I always know what the next hottest thing is?  For example, nautical stripes, I mentioned them on my blog and now they’re all over sites like luckymag.com.

It really isn’t that hard.  You just keep your eyes open, read a lot of fashion magazines, and if you’re stuck in a place for a long time, you people watch.

What’s the next trend?  Floral is still in, but beach season is approaching fast.  Trends there still remain to be seen, but I’m hoping for cutout one piece bathing suits.  Military style things?  Possibly. Polka dots?  Definitely.

How to wear all of these trends together?  You don’t.

Polka dots don’t match floral, military style + polka dot = disaster, and cutouts remain to be seen what they match with.

Here is a Polyvore set to show you how I think some trends should be worn.

Most fashionistas know that the little black dress, aka the LBD, is a fashion staple.  So when I saw this LBD on yahoo.com, I knew I had to do a post about it.

It fits her perfectly!  However, a sweeping gown like this isn’t the only way to wear a LBD.

the LBD
Can you see how these 4 LBD’s have vastly different styles?  The far left has a quirky feel, the one to 2nd left is more daring, then a girly dress and a floaty one.  The accessories (as I think Marg has commented before) can make a vast change in the same dress.
Other staple items include a white tee or tank, jeans, and black heels.  For the guys, the same except comfy brown shoes instead of heels.

I have been volunteering at an organization called One Simple Wish.  OSW grants “wishes” to foster children, and right now, they’re selling prom gowns in a dress shop.

You can donate your own dresses to them, they accept gently used dresses.  I would recommend the gowns being no older than 5 years old.

When I’m in there, I’m amazed at how many different dresses they have.  They probably have about 500 dresses!  If you look, you can spot some Vera Wang dresses, Michael Kors and Nine West shoes.

I’ve heard some of the volunteers talking, and they say, “ooh, that’s cute!”  “I want that one!”   Currently you can enter to win the dress that Miss Teen USA won.  Brooke Burke, host of Dancing with the Stars, also gave two dresses that you can buy!

I highly recommend going to check out One Simple Wish and their dress shop.  You can find more info here:  http://www.onesimplewish.org/   or email info@onesimplewish.org.

You know its April.  So what’s with the temps?!  90 degrees today.  I had to go and splash around in a stream like an 8 year old to cool off!

On the topic of heat, I must advise you not to wear micro-shorts.  Those are the shorts that aren’t flattering on anybody above a size 2.  Short shorts maybe, but eh.  If you’re exercising or using them as a coverup after a swim, they’re just too short!

Everyone can look good in Bermuda shorts, though.  Bermudas are knee-length.

Ruffles are hard to wear!  You don’t want to over ruffle, but it is also hard to find flattering ruffles.

I’m so glad to see color again!  After the blah winter of black, brown, and gray, it’s nice to see red, pink, and purple.

Also, nautical stripes caught my attention.

They’re nice, I guess.  But horizontal stripes are hard to wear.

All for now.  Take this poll to give your opinion and comment below; have you seen any trends I haven’t?

I’ve noticed that patterns are back, especially argyle and floral print.  Just remember to keep one pattern per outfit, including shoes.

Also, remember not to wear one color all the time.  Have two favorite colors, I do.  All black never looks good, unless you’re at a funeral.

Spring outfits

I think leggings are still in for Spring.  Denim short shorts (around mid-thigh) are the way to wear denim.  And for the beach?  Wear bold colors.  With shorts as a cover up.  Old Navy flip flops are still the best deal around, so go and stock up.

I wandered into Liz Claiborne and Ann Taylor to see what the trends were.  Liz Claiborne had a lot of patterned shirts, and navy shorts.  Ann Taylor had purple dresses, and some floral prints.

The weather has been mostly nice, but don’t put away the winter gear yet!  It still gets cold at night and you’ll need a trench coat.
