What lies before us

On the eve of Valentine’s Day when the Malaysian authorities are gearing up to mount a nationwide hunt on “wayward” Muslim couples, ordinary Malaysians were made to understand that there were certain personalities who were apparently embroiled in deceit. Incidentally, tomorrow’s “hunt” is largely to ensure that Muslims, particularly couples, are morally upright.

One instance concerns the case of the Saudi journalist, Hamza Kashgari, who was alleged to have committed blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad and had been deported back from Kuala Lumpur to Saudi Arabia to face the music. Human rights group, Lawyers for Liberty, had asserted that Home Minister Hishamuddin Hussein had lied pertaining to this controversy.

Then there’s the case of two ex’s hitting out at each other. Ex-Prime Minister Mahathir accused the former Chief Justice, Mohd Dzaiddin Abdullah, of lying. The latter claimed that the judiciary became subservient to the Parliament because Mahathir “clipped its wings in the 1980s when he amended Article 121 of the Constitution”.

Of course, we’re not suggesting here that two (or more) lies make a right.

Love will keep us together

No, this is not about the unmistakable Obedient Wives Club (OWC), although love — and of course, sex — is very much their preoccupation. We’re talking about the newly acquired 15 ‘Sayang Squad’ vans that are meant to help Wanita Umno in Kelantan to serve the people in the state — presumably with care and love. See here.

Je t’aime

A few songs to gingerly express Je t’aime in Malaysia.

Racists and the human race

In a world where racism drives a dangerous wedge between peoples, where hatred fights love, where discrimination craves for institutional respectability, where injustice tramples on human dignity, and where the incorrigible lust for power displaces the warm embrace for humanity, this song comes in handy.

News leak on Bung

News has just been leaked out about Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin who committed polygamy without a Syariah court’s consent.

He recently married actress Zizie Izette Abdul Samad, who also pleaded guilty at the Gombak Timur Lower Syariah Court in Kuala Lumpur to a charge of committing polygamy without the court’s permission.

Love don’t cost a thing

A minister allegedly gave his wife a costly car as a birthday present.

The car, so goes the allegation, was sponsored by a company that gained tenders for the ministry’s projects.

Both the minister and wife denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the car was theirs.

This allegation in some ways reminds one of Jennifer Lopez’s old hit.

Love to love you, 1Sayang

In today’s The Star, we’re told that Wanita Umno plans to reach out and touch someone — with tender loving care. This is indeed one of the calculated attempts to close the gap between the ruling BN coalition and the rakyat since the political tsunami of March 8, 2008:

KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita Umno has unveiled the “Sayang” project, a new community outreach programme to bring them closer to the public and serve their needs.

Under the project, Wanita Umno will carry out charity, community and volunteer work to serve the needs of the grassroots.

It will also be implemented by Wanita Barisan Nasional.

Wanita Umno chief and Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said welfare should come from the heart instead of big budget programmes.

“My ministry has spent RM457mil to help the poor. Now I want Wanita to give more of their heart,” she told reporters yesterday after the launch by the Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Al-Fatihah: Yasmin passed away

Today is a sad day especially for Malaysian movie goers who celebrate human and cultural diversity that is manifested in the movies made by internationally acclaimed film director Yasmin Ahmad. She passed away last night.

Yasmin’s films are politically and intellectually significant particularly in a society where ethnic and religious differences are often capitalised by certain quarters for short-term political gains to the detriment of social harmony.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to her husband and family.

Al-Fatihah.

‘Love’ is in the Malaysian air…

Been away for quite some time now, and thus it gives me a strange feeling to come back home to learn that ‘love’ in Malaysia is very much in the air.

So it seems that certain UMNO leaders and their counterparts in Pas have been struck by Cupid’s dart. But such a ‘love affair’ predictably causes some people to wonder aloud. For instance, how deep is this ‘love’? Or, where will all this affection and amorous feelings really lead them to?

One thing is for sure, though: Pas spiritual leader Nik Aziz is not going to touch ‘love’ again even with a ten-foot pole. He should know ‘coz he’s been there before. See here.
