Remember the 80ies Series Vol. 5 (House Special) (CD Rip)

Another themed compilation so we are talking 80’s Old Skool House. No tracklist so here I go !

Good Olde Jack ! Mostly early UK and US House that went overground. (1986 -8)

Not really into the repetitive and primitive nature of early House. The comp opens with “House Nation” – the Mixbeated Original from The House Master Boyz And The Rude Boy Of House (a.k.a – Farley “Jackmaster” Funk Williams) Forgot it was a UK release too! From 1986 and a very primitive jack track.

Track 2 is “Beat Dis” the 12″ version that still is quite inventive.

Track 3 is “Jack Your Body (Club Your Body)” by US Producer Steve “Silk” Hurley. A classic in the UK as well as US. Proper Chicago House

Tired Of Getting Pushed Around (Bonus Beats)” from the FYC guys and from 1988 was interesting then and still is. 2 Men A Drum Machine And A Trumpet – what an honest group name.

Onto the immense track 5 and Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk’s “Love Can’t Turn Around” here in the short 3 mins plus version. Still a Classic although Daryl Pandy’s vocals are a bit more restrained.

Track 6 “Jack To The Sound Of The Underground (Party Mix)” from Dutch producer Peter Slaghuis. And here is the list of all the samples for you anoraks.
“Picture this….Recording studio somewhere far far away…Ooooo-wheee you bugger!” – The Buggers – The Bugger Groove
“Say kids what time is it? It’s time for house!” – Coldcut – Doctorin’ The House
“Ooh. Aah!” – Mac Thornhill – Who’s Gonna Ease The Pressure (Big Mac Mix)
“Check this out!” – “We Don’t Play (Live)” from MC Shy D – Got To Be Tough
Bass riff – Georgio – Bedrock
“You got it!” – Lidell Townsell – Get The Hole
Keyboard stab – Duran Duran – A View To A Kill
“On..on..on..on the double!” – Nia Peeples – Trouble
“Hit It! – Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock – It Takes Two
“Jack to the sound of the underground” – Side B of “Fast” Eddie Smith – The Julian “Jumpin” Perez Megamix
Trumpet and drums (12″ version only) – Montreal Sound – Music
“You’re no good for me, I don’t need no body, don’t need no-one thats no good for me” – Kelly Charles – You’re No Good For Me
Disco riff – Bobby Thurston – Check Out The Groove
“Yeah you know house”! – The Beatmasters Featuring The Cookie Crew – Rok Da House
“House train, house train house…house train, house train” – Risse – House Train
Scratching and “this stuff is really fresh” – Side B of Fab 5 Freddy / B-Side – Change The Beat
“Da da, da-da da da” riff using vocal sample – “Club Vocal” Remix of Natalie Cole – Pink Cadillac

So nowt original but well put together.

Track 7 is the best version of The Jungle Brothers Hip House track, “I’ll House You (Houseapella Mix)” another one that went overground.

Not really familiar with “Turn Up The Bass (Scratch The Bass)” with the rap from Kool Rock Steady – played it and I do know it 😊

Can you play air piano to stuff ? Well you can to this – Marshall Jefferson – “Move Your Body (The House Music Anthem)” from 1986. Another Classic with a big C. Track 10 has the Original version of “Promised Land” by Joe Smooth and featuring the vocals of Anthony Johnson that PSB used a lot of “It’s Alright”

Ending, disappointingly, with “Pump Up The Volume” – covered already on this blog in detail. Here in the 7 mins 12 sec version.

Loose Ends – Choose Me (Rescue Me) (LTD Edition 2 x 12″)

Their 6th single and still not making an impression on the charts! Released in June ’84 this came with a bonus 12″ with a ‘Turntable Mix’ consists of ‘Tell Me What You Want’ and ‘Emergency (Dial 999)’ tracks mixed together. How about that for being pioneering ?

Saxophone is pushed high in the mix giving it a Smooth Jazz feel and a Summery vibe.

Another exceptional dub mix , Club Ready even for today, especially with the synth bassline. An uncredited Bruce Forest mix

“In The Sky” doubles up the bass and brings up jazz funk to the preceding’s. A nice bonus to have.

Thanks Andreas.

Their 5th single released in April ’84 and previewing their debut LP “A Little Spice” and only reached 41 in the charts.

Nick Martinelli was firmly in the studio chair given it a US sheen on nd giving it a very decent Dub mix. Police sirens and ambient walkie talkie sounds with the strong rhythm section. Very inventive.

Depeche Mode – Best Of Dominatrix CD 1

From 2020 and sounding very modern and fresh. German Andreas Motke knows how to do a DM remix.

“Love In Itself” has a bleepy appeal in a more techno sounding version.

“Walking In My Shoes” is given an update and with slightly pitched up vocals ust about works. “Something To Do” is slower and darker with a harder bassline.

“Heaven” is actually improved with the dancier beats but why The Human League inclusion ?

“Blasphemous Rumours” is turned into a driving uptempo Floor Filler !! -a radical rework.

“Cover Me” is a very recent single given an ambient but driving remix and it only gets better with “World In My Eyes” another great version.

“Leave In Silence” is true to the original version, plenty of chimes and horns. “The Things You Said” is beefed up and has added DM samples.

Part 2 next week.

Babyface – Whip Appeal (US Promo CD + CDS)

Smooth R&B for a Wednesday with this 1990 track in all its guises.

Despite the weird title a smouldering ballad. Another great song from the legendary songwriter/producer Kenneth Edmonds.

A Spicy Slow Jam.

David Lee Roth – Crazy From The Heat E.P. (12″) + Re-up

Actually bought this when it came out back in 1985 after being seduced by the mad videos.

Diamond Dave debut and releases a 4 tracker of cover versions in his own particular style produced by Ted Templeman. Gathering a band together that he would use for his first solo album and perform another cover – Sinatra’s “That’s Life”. A stellar line up of Session musicians.

  • Backing Vocals – Carl Wilson (Beach Boys) (tracks: B1), Christopher Cross (tracks: B1)
  • Bass – Willie Weeks (Gypsy, Doobie Brothers) (tracks: A1 to B1)
  • Drums – John Robinson (Rufas & Chaka Khan) (tracks: A1 to B1)
  • Guitar – Eddie Martinez (tracks: A1 to B1), Sid McGinnis (tracks: A1 to B1)
  • Guitar – Dean Parks (tracks: B2)
  • Keyboards, Saxophone, Backing Vocals – Edgar Winter (tracks: A1 to A2.2)
  • Percussion – Sammy Figueroa (tracks: A1 to B1)
  • Synthesizer – Brian Mann (tracks: A1 to B1), Edgar Winter (tracks: B1)
  • Synthesizer – James Newton Howard (tracks: B2)

Here are the songs origins;

Easy Street is originally from The Edgar Winter Group (Dan Hartman)
California Girls originally from The Beach Boys
Just A Gigolo from Louis Prima.
I Ain’t Got Nobody from Avon Comedy Four / Marion Harris – Way Out Yonder In The Golden West / I Ain’t Got Nobody Much
Coconut Grove from The Lovin’ Spoonful.

It’s more Glam Rock than anything. Dead surprised that all that some of the horns are synthetic.

Been a secret admirer ever since.

Molly Hatchet – Satisfied Man (US Promo 12″)

Apparently these guys have been around a while. They formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1971 but had to wait to the late 70’s mid 80’s for success. Here is the wiki link;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molly_Hatchet

This is from the LP “The Deed Is Done” (1984) – the opening track.

Produced (and adding backing vocals) by Terry Manning. It features the six members – Bruce Crump, Danny Joe Brown, Dave Hlubek, Duane Roland, John Galvin and Riff West

FM Rock was becoming a genre and this release fitted the bill.

Are you a satisfied man ?

Lo’s Songs – The Letter T (Volume 4) + links

And it keeps on going…

Another selection of tracks where you can Tinder-like swipe left to right depending on your musical bent.

The Talk – Out My Window (1984)

US (Montana) Power Pop with more than your average dose of synth.

  • Guitar – Tom Nash
  • Keyboards, Synthesizer – Ken Toft
  • Lead Vocals, Bass, Producer – Wylie Gustafson
  • Saxophone – Chris Mercer
  • Drums, Percussion – Randy Pavlish

I think this is a cover (if it isn’t it’s very good) but it’s a good opening track for this compilation.

The Taxi’s – When You Say Yeah-Yeah (Night Side) (1984)

From Belgium – Rick Tubbax And The Taxi’s to give them there full name. Very New Wave with plucked bass and plenty of chanted vocals. A bit of a dub style version to the “day” version.

Bass – Jan Cordemans, Drums – Geerd Van Proeyen, Guitar – Luc Canters, Guitar, Vocals – Rick Tubbax and Keyboards – Luc Salu

The Telling – Ghost Of Tokyo (1986)

From their debut EP this US duo of Don Swanson, Eris offer up some thoughtful electronica. Spoken word / New Age vocals. More New Age flutes in the arrangement. Very intrigued.

The Thoughts – Face In Photograph (1984)

A Mike B discovery but enhanced with this album track (“Passion’s In Fashion”) from Lo. Traditional New Wave guitar riff and very catchy.

  • Bass, Vocals – Tony Newman
  • Drums, Vocals – Steve Morley
  • Guitar, Vocals – Chris Waters and Mark Edwards
  • Keyboards, Vocals – Jenx
  • Saxophone – Gary Barnacle

Given some light production by Clive Scott. An interesting / unexpected ending.

The Touch – Here On Earth (1984)

From a compilation on the UK label Vulcan Records called ” Flightpath One” From Sheffield / Worksop The Touch provide a New Wave by numbers track. Some nice synth though.

The Trees – Wrong Side Of Town (1988)

Canadian Power Pop with some cheap sounding synths (those chimes!) But…but…but it is very catchy in an earworm sort of way.

The Trial – Terrible Scream (1991)

The Trial is the name of synthpop band founded in 1988 in Beroun (Czechoslovakia at that time; now Czech Republic). The band itself espoused to a legacy of electronic music of 80s. Songs of The Trial reached even the british radio stations supported by John Peel.

An interesting, organic sounding track taken from vinyl. never ever heard of Depeche Mode.

The Ultraviolet – Shattered World (1989)

Jangle guitar and a bit of Americana. From the “Album Network Unsigned Bands CD Tune Up #7” compilation. For fans of The Alarm.

The V Project – First Hand Experience in Second Hand Love [Instr] (1986)

Some Space Disco and an excellent. cover of a Moroder track. Vocoder in full effect. From Canadian DJ / Producer Degiorgio

  • Keyboards – Terrez
  • Mixed By – Hugh Cooper
  • Producer, Concept By [Conceived By] – Vincent Degiorgio
  • Recorded By – Tony DaSilva

The Valley Forge – Escape (1986)

UK New Wave and a bit of a baggie arrangement and from my home town of Barrow-in-Furness !!! I knew I remembered the name from somewhere.

Good bio about them

https://www.discogs.com/artist/1240314-The-Valley-Forge

So quite poppy with a sprinkle of keyboards

The View – Only Water

Angular guitars and riffage with the odd Simmons pad. XTC in style.

From the US compilation “8 Essential Attitudes” on Baltimore label Frantic Records. And that’s your lot.

The Voices – I Wish It Wasn’t True (1981)

Oz stuff from Sydney and sounding a bit like The Police. Producer Rick Turk adds a bit of keyboards to fatten out the sound. Great harmonies as you would expect with the bands name.

  • Drums, vocals – Rob Spark
  • Guitar, vocals – Barry Lewis
  • Guitar, lead vocals – Frank Lewis
  • Bass, vocals. – Steve Lewis

The Waterfront  – Be With You (Extended) (1988)

A bit like Then Jericho. Working with Colin Thurston in the studio. Power Pop with a bit of tech thrown in.

  • Backing Vocals, Guitar – Gary England
  • Backing Vocals, Keyboards, Programmed By – Adrienne Aiken
  • Bass – Kevin Jarvis
  • Guitar – Colin Stuart
  • Vocals, Acoustic Guitar – Philip Jap

The Wild Swans – Worst Year Of My Life (Lost Mix) (1988)

From the album “Bringing Home The Ashes” Romantic New Wave Pop with some Morrissey like vocals. Love this bit of Dream Pop on this extended version and a good way to bring this shorter post to an end.

Not enough on here by this band

Just 14 tracks that bring THE to a close!

Thomas Dolby – Live Manchester O2 Ritz (19/8/24)

Needed to post this review but things got in the way.

So went to see the legendary Thomas Dolby in my hometown of Manchester a few weeks ago and brought Beth along as my friend Woody could not make the trip up.

From the start the place was rammed. It’s quite a big venue and I was pleasantly surprised as I only saw him (the bald version) back in London in 2006 on the Sole Inhabitant tour and thought that would be that and again in Manchester in 2012.

Support act Martin McAloon (of Prefab Sprout) charmed the audience and joked that he hoped they weren’t expecting his brother. Silver haired and surrounded by guitars his thick Geordie accent in between songs helped it be bearable. No, he isn’t the best vocalists but the crowd helped him out as he covered , acoustically, some of Prefab Sprots better known tracks. “Appetite” was really well received and we got conducted for his gentle rendition of “The King Of Rock N Roll.”

On to the main man himself. Greeted with thunderous applause he started with the worst kept gig spoiler track, “Blue Monday” by New Order- he could not have missed that off being in Manchester. Handheld synth and plenty of vocoder he bounded around the stage with youthful exuberance. Strange choice of the next track “Evil Twin Brother”- not that well known and then CRASH – everything went off for along 3 minutes. Dolby retired backstage to let the “experts” reboot the systems.

He rattles through the tracks, clear and powerful sound. “My Brain Is Like A Sieve” has the modern touch having a virtual (video) of Jason Mraz on vocals really didn’t do it for me and was one of the down-points of the evening.

“Budapest By Blimp” was a highlight on the other hand, with projections of the city played on the screens. Beth and I are going there for our first visit in just over a couple of weeks time so the visual treat made us really look forward to it.

Closing track “Airwaves” was the icing on the cake for me. Captured by my friend Monty – all the other stuff was from our phones.

A short set – 55 minutes but quality!

Remember the 80ies Series Vol. 4 (BreakBeat Special) (CD Rip)

Shining Disc Sunday (manually putting in the tracklist of this mysterious compilation series)

More dedicated to the Street Beats with some very interesting versions. A Raygun workout.

Track 1 is Camouflage’s “Love Is A Shield” – not very break beats but it’s a quick and synthy opener.

Track 2 “Rock It” the definite Breakbeat Classic. Herbie’s track still stands up. Track 3 the full (nearly 9 min version) of “I.O.U.”

“Me, Myself And I” gets a really long Richie Rich remix on track 4. Plenty of live scratching on the De La Soul classic that doesn’t get enough plays today.

Ben Liebrand remixes the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” adding well used cliche beats and overdubs.

Track 6 has McLaren’s “Buffalo Girls” with Horn’s production giving it that bit of finesse – need to find my vinyl copy.

Another version I haven’t heard of “Let The Music Play”– the Ultimix gives Shannon’s track some harsh edits.

Track 8 and Mantronix has the track “Bassline” and only the second track which has a rap by MC Tee . Edits by Nunez and a distinct Roland TB-303 bassline, great stuff from 1986.

Track 9 and the Hypnotic mix of “Hypnotic Tango” by My Mine which emerged in 1990, short and punchy.

Track 10 and a new one to me id “Freak-A-Zoid” by Midnight Star from 1983. Vocoder and a proper Breakbeat Electro arrangement on this bit of Space Funk.

“Tell It To My Heart” has the whip crack drums and always seems faster on the Club Mix. Taylor Dayne’s (Leslie Wunderman) original version with that overactive trumpet synth.

The compilation closes with the 7″ version / album version of “Don’t Make Me Wait” by Bomb The Bass, a good choice. Even with the radio intro. Great vocals by Lorraine McIntosh and the guitar by Roddy Marsh. (it’s in there)
