Grocery Rationing Within Four Years

There is a lack of public comment and debate about Kamala Harris’s call for price controls on groceries and rents, the most stunning and frightening policy proposal made in my lifetime.

Immediately, of course, people will reply that she is not for price controls as such. It is only a limit on “gouging” (which she variously calls “gauging”) on grocery prices. As for rents, it’s only for larger-scale corporations with many units.

This is nonsense. If there really are national price-gouging police running around, every single seller of groceries, from small convenience stores to farmers’ markets to chain stores, will be vulnerable. No one wants the investigation so they will comply with de facto controls. No one knows for sure what gouging is.

Don Boudreaux is correct:

“A government that threatens to punish merchants for selling at nominal prices higher than deemed appropriate by government clearly intends to control prices. It’s no surprise, therefore, that economists routinely analyze prohibitions against so-called ‘price gougingusing exactly the same tools they use to analyze other forms of price controls.”

As for rental units, the only result will be fewer amenities, new charges, new fees for what used to be free, less service, and a dramatically reduced incentive to build new units. That will only lead to a pretext for more subsidies, more public housing, and more government provision generally. We have experience with that and it is not good.

The next step is nationalizing housing and rationing of groceries because there will be ever fewer available.

The more the betting odds favor Kamala, the stronger the incentive to raise prices as high as possible now in anticipation of price controls come next year. That will provide even more seeming evidence for the need for more controls and a genuine crackdown.

Price controls lead to shortages of anything they touch, especially in inflationary times. With the Federal Reserve seemingly on the verge of cutting rates for no good reason – rates are very low in real terms by any historical standard – we might see wave two of inflation later next year.

Here are real interest rates historically considered as they stand. Do you see a case here for lowering them?

Next time, however, merchants will not be in a position to respond rationally. Instead, they will confront federal price investigators and prosecutors.

Kamala is wrong that this will be the “first-ever” ban on price gouging. We had that in World War II, along with rationing tickets on meat, animal fats, foil, sugar, flour, foil, coffee, and more. It was a time of extreme austerity, and people put up with it because they believed it was saving resources for the war effort. It was enforced the same as we saw with covid lockdowns: a huge network enlisting state and local institutions, media, and private zealots ready to rat out the rebels.

Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 8875 on August 28, 1941. It claimed broad powers to manage all production and consumption in the US. On January 30, 1942, the Emergency Price Control Act granted the Office of Price Administration (OPA) the authority to set price limits and ration food and other commodities. Products were added as shortages intensified.

And yes, all of this was heavily enforced.

In case you are doing the math, that’s a $200,000 fine today for noncompliance. In other words, this was very serious and highly coercive.

Technology limited enforcement, however, and black markets sprung up everywhere. The so-called Meatleggers were the most famous and most demonized by government propaganda.

What happens when the government restricts meat consumption?

During World War II, food rationing led to significant changes in consumption habits in the United States.

— Meat Head (@markeatsmeat) February 20, 2024

In a nation with more agriculture in demographic proximity, people relied on local farmers and various methods of bartering goods and services.

Years went by and somehow people got through it but production for civilian purposes came to a near standstill. The GDP for the period looked like growth but the reality was a continuation and intensification of the Great Depression that began more than a decade earlier.

There are fewer people alive now that recall these days but I’ve known some. They adopted habits of extreme conservation. I once had a neighbor who simply could not bear to throw away tin-foil pie pans because she had lived through rationing. After she died, her kids discovered her vast collection and it shocked them. She was not crazy, just traumatized.

How would such a thing transpire today?

Look at the program SNAP, the new name for food stamps. For those who qualify, the money goes into a special account managed by the federal government. The recipient is sent an EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card, which is used like a credit card in stores. It costs taxpayers some $114 billion a year, and works out as a huge subsidy to Big Agriculture, which is why the program is administered by the Department of Agriculture.

Transitioning that program to the general population would not be difficult. It would be a simple matter of expansion of eligibility. As shortages grow, so too could the program until the entire population would be on it and it would be mandatory. It could also be converted into a mobile app instead of a piece of plastic as a fraud-prevention measure. With everyone carrying cell phones, this would be an easy step.

And where could people spend the money? Only at participating institutions. Would non-participation institutions be entitled to sell food, for example, at local farmers’ co-ops? Maybe at first but that’s before the media demonization campaigns come along to decry the rich who are eating more than their fair share and the sellers who are exploiting the national emergency.

You can see how this all unfolds, and none of it is implausible. Only a few years ago, governments around the country canceled gatherings for religious holidays, limited the numbers of people who could gather in homes, and banned public weddings and funerals. If they can do that, they can do anything, including the rationing of all food.

The program that Harris has proposed is not like other matters that she has flip-flopped on. She is serious and repeats it. She spoke about it even during the debate with Trump but there was no followup or critique of the scheme offered. Nor does such a crazy plan require some legislation and a vote by Congress. It could come in the form of an executive order. Yes, it would be tested by the Supreme Court but, if recent history holds, the program would be long in effect before the Court weighed in. Nor is it clear how it would rule.

The Supreme Court in 1942 heard the case of Albert Yakus, a Boston-based meat seller who was criminally prosecuted for violating the wholesale beef price ceiling. In Yakus vs. United States, the Supreme Court ruled for the government and against the meat-selling criminal. That’s the existing precedent.

Nor does all this have to unfold immediately following the inauguration. It can happen as matters become ever worse following anti-gouging edicts and when inflation worsens. After all, a presidency that believes in central planning and forced economic austerity would last a full four years, and the coercion could grow month after month until we have comprehensively enforced deprivation by the end, and no one remembers what it was like to buy groceries at market prices with their own money.

I wish I could say that this is an outlandish and fear-mongering warning. It is not. It is a very realistic scenario based on repeated statements and promises plus the recent history of government management of the population. There is likely another wave of inflation coming. This time it will meet with a promise to use every coercive power of government to prevent increases in prices on groceries and rents.

What if voters actually understood this? What then?

Keep in mind the main legacy of the Covid years: governments learned the fullness of what they could do under the right circumstances. That’s the worst possible lesson but that is what has stuck. The implications for the future are grim.

What if a foreign hacker could turn home batteries into “pager-bombs” but 7,500 times bigger? « JoNova

Battery bombs in the suburbs?

Battery bombs in the suburbs?

By Jo Nova

You think exploding pagers was a wicked trick….

Hypothetically, suppose you were distracted while you tried to change tropospheric jet streams, and accidentally gave away your national manufacturing to a foreign adversary. Next thing you know, you’re buying the batteries they make, and installing them in essential grid infrastructure and thousands of homes. You’re patting yourself on the back for getting a cheap deal (never mind the slaves) and it all seems dandy until one sunny day, a leader who was cheesed off with a trade deal, quietly switched off the “overcharge protection” on all of them remotely.

At that point, millions of solar panels are pumping excess electricity into batteries that have no safety cut off. A few houses start to go off like popcorn, and an hour later we’re all living at the Western Front.

Brian Craighead – chief executive of Energy Renaissance, has come to warn us — it’s a hidden threat to national security. He says Australia has already installed 220,000 batteries that were made in potentially unfriendly places, and each home battery has roughly 7,500 times as much energy as a pager.  As he remarks: “overcharge is when all hell breaks loose”.

Now, he happens to sell secure battery management systems — so he has an interest in scaring the socks off Energy Ministers and hyping things up, but ask yourself this: would Anthony Albanese have seen this coming?

To ask the question is to know we’re in trouble.

Energy entrepreneur says Australia’s solar and battery boom is a ‘clear and present danger’

By Jared Lynch, The Australian

“When everyone talks about battery safety, we tend to think about the chemical stuff – these fires that you see on videos of Tesla cars going up. But those are relatively unusual. The key thing to focus on is battery software … that’s what protects them from overcharging.

“Let’s say you were a bad actor from a bad country, here’s what you could do, and this would be horribly easy. For example, you could say on January 7, 2025, I’m going to turn off the overcharge on 200,000 batteries installed in homes in Australia. Nothing is going to happen until then.”

It would make a great movie, but a lousy life:

“A co-ordinated attack exploiting these vulnerabilities could lead to widespread fires, explosions, and a crippling of our energy infrastructure. The risk extends beyond individual homes. Large, imported grid-connected batteries are becoming integral to Australia’s national energy grid. These massive storage systems, often managed by foreign-developed software, could be susceptible to cyber-attacks or sabotage, posing a threat to national security and public safety.

“There’s a clear and present danger.”

As Craighead says (so colorfully) — it’s like pink-batts on steroids. (A program here in Australia where a Big Government-made bubble in home insulation killed 3 poorly trained people and set fire to 200 homes.)

In the end, after the bombs and the blackouts, the hit to the GDP and the death toll — it will all be deemed a dreadful accident, due to a fault in a minor part, and a hot day caused by climate change. Everyone will know what happened, but no one will want to risk the lobster-wine-coal-barley-beer-students deal, and besides the nation needs to order new fridges and solar panels.

Unless, of course the home-battery-bombs were a decoy in a larger hostile plan, in which case we’ll have bigger things to worry about.

Speaking of which:

The US banned the Pentagon from buying batteries from six Chinese manufacturers earlier this year.

What is Salmonella and what are the symptoms of Salmonella infection?

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness and death in humans and animals, especially those who are very young, very old, or have weak immune systems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people infected with Salmonella can develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Most people recover without treatment, but in some people, the diarrhea may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized. In these patients, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream and then to other body sites unless the person is treated promptly. Consult your health care provider if you have symptoms of Salmonella infection.

Pets do not always display symptoms when infected with Salmonella, but signs can include vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, loss of appetite and/or decreased activity level. If your pet has these symptoms, consult a veterinarian promptly. You should also be aware that infected pets can shed the bacteria in their feces without showing signs of being sick.

What is Listeria monocytogenes (L. mono) and what are the symptoms of L. mono infection (listeriosis)?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause illness and death in humans and animals, especially those who are pregnant, very young, very old, or have weak immune systems. According to CDC, listeriosis in humans can cause a variety of symptoms, depending on the person and the part of the body affected. Symptoms can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions in addition to fever and muscle aches.

Pregnant women typically experience only fever and other flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue and muscle aches. However, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.

Pregnant women and their newborns, adults ages 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to get sick with listeriosis. Anyone with symptoms of listeriosis should contact a health care provider.

L. mono infections are uncommon in pets, but they are possible. Symptoms may include mild to severe diarrhea; anorexia; fever; nervous, muscular and respiratory signs; pregnancy loss; depression; shock; and death. Pets do not need to display symptoms to be able to pass L. mono on to their human companions. As with Salmonella, infected pets can shed L. mono in their feces and saliva without showing signs of being sick, further contaminating the household environment.

Why is the FDA concerned about Salmonella and L. mono in pet food?

Pet foods contaminated with Salmonella and L. mono are of particular public health importance because they can affect both human and animal health. Pets can get sick from Salmonella and may also be carriers of the bacteria and pass it on to their human companions without appearing to be ill. The FDA is aware of cases in which humans and/or animals have gotten sick from exposure to Salmonella-contaminated pet foods (Salmonella-human cases, Salmonella-kitten, Salmonella-kitten, dogExternal Link Disclaimer).  Although FDA is not aware of a documented case of a person acquiring L. mono infection from a pet food, once Salmonella or L. mono get established in the pet’s gastrointestinal tract, the animal can shed the bacteria in the feces when it has a bowel movement, and the contamination may continue to spread. Clean up the animal’s feces in yards or parks where people or other animals may become exposed, in addition to cleaning items in the home.

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requires that all animal foods, like human foods, be safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions, contain no harmful substances, and be truthfully labeled. Refrigeration or freezing does not kill Salmonella or L. mono

How can I report a pet illness?

People who think their pets have become ill after consuming contaminated pet food should first contact their veterinarians. Veterinarians who wish to have pets tested for Salmonella and L. mono may do so through the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN Network) if the pet is from a household with a person infected with Salmonella or L. mono

The FDA encourages consumers to report complaints about pet food products electronically through the Safety Reporting Portal. Additionally, consumers can visit the SmartHub – Safety Intake Portal – Report a Product Problem (fda.gov) to obtain electronic assistance with submitting a report.

No justice for the vaccine injured

Media Blackout: 10 News Stories They Chose Not to Tell You This Week

#10 – Vaccine Horror: 23-year-old suffers devastating injury after being given three vaccines at once.

Within ten minutes of her injections, Alexis Lorenze went temporarily blind, began vomiting, and then things went horribly downhill from there.

Before Nurse Angela intervened, UC Irvine staff mocked Alexis’s injuries, laughed at her, and subjected her to extreme delays when she requested help while suffering from unbearable pain.

After Alexis’s horrific vaccine injury went viral, she was transferred to the ICU, likely due to the mounting public pressure on the hospital. And the doctor who mandated these shots on Alexis has since disappeared from the picture.

Thankfully, Alexis is slowly getting better and has regained vision in both eyes, but still suffers from setbacks and a great deal of pain.

Alexis says as soon as she starts getting “a little bit of strength back,” she’s going to join forces with the vaccine-injured community to take down the criminal medical system that injured her.

Kamala’s Money Machine

sonsoflibertymedia.com

Tim Brown

“Kamala demands a life of luxury.”

“Kamala demands a life of luxury,” a former aide revealed. “She treats the campaign like a personal checking account to fund a lifestyle she aspires to,” another aide warned.

“Staff has always worried about Kamala’s spending, but she is adamant about using campaign money as she wants,” that aide on her former Senate campaign said.

“She wants to live the life of someone in the White House,” a strategist described Kamala in 2015, “and she hasn’t even won the Senate yet. Her hanging around the president and first lady”, referencing the Obamas, “it’s gotten her hooked. She thinks it’s her birthright and it’s not.”

Kamala was raising and spending massive amounts of campaign cash. Much of it on herself.

While Kamala falsely claimed that she was raised in “a middle-class household”, she was actually the “privileged child of foreign grad students” who traveled the world, and grew up surrounded by wealth. Her career as a prosecutor failed to satisfy her taste for luxury so she turned to Willie Brown: the first in a series of men who would support her in high style.

San Francisco Mayor Brown put her on taxpayer-funded boards where she earned $400,000 for showing up, flew her around the country and the world, and gifted her a BMW. Kamala mingled with Nob Hill elites in San Francisco and posed “in a fashion spread, shown wearing $565 boots, a $975 skirt and a $1,095 coat, all made by Burberry” difficult to imagine on a Deputy DA’s salary while living it up and partying in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Brown also bought her a political career and her lifestyle by backing her run for the city’s DA. Despite polling in the single digits, money from San Francisco’s elites poured into the unknown candidate’s campaign. At events, her finance director described how “we’d go around with the bag and collect the money.”  Kamala’s fundraising blew through the spending cap leading to a record fine. She paid the fine with the campaign’s pocket change and bought her first election.

The state attorney general’s race was a replay with Kamala behind in the polls and up against a well known DA, but backed by endless money from wealthy donors. And by the time Kamala ran for Senate, she had learned to live large on the millions coming in from donors.

But Democrats were paying closer attention and were getting uncomfortable with the spending.

The National Journal ran a story describing Kamala’s habit of staying at luxury hotels. The campaign spent $1,886 to put Kamala up for the night in D.C.’s St. Regis hotel as part of a string of stays at out-of-state luxury hotels in Houston, Chicago and D.C. for a state race.

Tens of thousands of dollars were being spent on “luxury car services” like a private car service in Martha’s Vineyard, and first class airline tickets. The campaign had burned millions of dollars even though Kamala had no actual Republican opponent and she couldn’t possibly lose.

But Kamala had learned the lessons that Willie Brown had taught her in San Francisco.

Politics was not about change, but luxury. Brown had claimed that he needed to drive luxury cars because “my body would reject a Plymouth.”  Kamala’s body would reject anything less than a thousand dollar hotel room, a BMW, a first class airline seat or a $975 skirt. Donor money from the elites allowed her to buy access to their lifestyle in exchange for buying access to her.

Disgusted aides and campaign workers headed for the exit. In a familiar story, the National Journal mentioned that she was on her “second campaign manager and third finance director”. A strategist complained that “she’s spending that way to support her diva lifestyle.”

After raising over $15 million and outspending her opponent almost 4 to 1, while enjoying the lavish perks of the lifestyle donors were buying her, she became Senator Kamala Harris.

When she ran for president, the donors who had invested so much stayed with her and blew through $40 million to finance a trainwreck of a presidential campaign abandoned by her top staffers and eventually by Kamala herself who never actually competed in a single primary.

Once again, Kamala had been spending beyond the campaign’s means. And while that had not been a fatal problem four years earlier when she had no real opponent, it left her with no cash on hand for the actual business of campaigning as the primaries loomed on the horizon.

By September, there was no money left for TV ads and by December and, the campaign couldn’t even afford to buy Facebook ads.

“Where did the $35 million go?” CNN quoted someone “close to Harris”.

While the millions in donor money didn’t buy Kamala the top spot, it did buy her the vice presidency. What actually made Biden pick Kamala as his VP? Kamala’s fundraiser for Biden topped every other Democrat fundraiser, including Hillary’s, with the exception of Obama’s.

The failed presidential candidate raised at least $5 million for Biden. CNBC noted, “her addition to the ticket could help push the Biden campaign over the top in the cash race with Trump.”

In 2024, donors, many of whom had backed Kamala, revolted against Biden’s debate performance, ousted the party’s actual nominee, and replaced him with their protege.

The media gushed over the announcement that Kamala had raised $81 million in the first 24 hours and $200 million in the first week after the donor coup. It glowingly reports each fundraising total as if it were a validation of the candidate rather than an indictment of a political campaign fueled by donors, not the 14 million who actually voted for Biden in the primaries.

And it asks no questions about where the money is coming from. Or where it’s going.

Once again a Kamala campaign is outraising her opponent. Projections are that she will raise $1 billion between the donor coup and Election Day. But Kamala has already burned through about half of the half a billion dollars she raised. The money machine is grinding up millions.

Kamala’s political career was never powered by charisma or conviction, but by cash.

Her current race, like her past races for DA, AG and Senate, is mired in contradictory messaging, no coherent platform and a dysfunctional campaign. Kamala has never learned how to run for office. What saw her through each race were political connections, identity politics and, above all else, the wealthy donors that invested unlimited amounts in her career.

While the donor coup against Biden was underway, Kamala spoke at a San Francisco fundraiser. “It all started here,” she said, mentioning Mark Buell, her original fundraising chair who had gone around “with the bag” to “collect the money” and who had helped her raise “a whopping $250,000”.

Kamala quoted an elected official “I’m not going to say who, but it was a big personality who we all know” who told her “show me you can raise some money, and maybe people will take you seriously.” That “big personality” was Willie Brown whose name she could only mention in code

The donors in the room, Kamala said, “have been on this journey with me from the very beginning.”

A few days before the donor coup against democracy, the New York Times quoted Mark Buell criticizing Biden and asking, “Do we have time to put somebody else in there?”

That someone was always going to be Buell’s protege and that of the money machine.

“We thought we’re ready for the next generation,” Buell told ABC News, and claimed that there would be a “data driven” process “to see what horse we’re going to ride to the finish line.”

The data was dollars and cents. Kamala had sold herself to donors a long time ago. The donors got America and Kamala got a BMW, a few outfits and a night at the St. Regis.

DACF Issues Product Recall For Rainbow Farm Eggs Amid Salmonella Outbreak

September 19, 2024

For more information contact: Jim Britt at: Jim.Britt@maine.gov

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) has issued an official product recall for eggs from Rainbow Farm in Orland, Maine, following a salmonellosis outbreak. The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) has identified the consumption of these eggs as the source of the outbreak.

At least five individuals have fallen ill and tested positive for salmonellosis after eating eggs from the farm. DACF’s Division of Quality Assurance and Regulations, along with the DACF Animal Health Program, is working closely with Rainbow Farm to address the issue. Production and distribution of the eggs has been halted while the farm undergoes necessary testing, farm sanitization, processing equipment cleaning, and potential culling of affected laying hens.

Current Situation

Consumers are advised to be cautious, as anyone who has consumed eggs from Rainbow Farm may be at elevated risk of contracting salmonellosis. Consumers who still have eggs from this farm are advised to dispose of the eggs or they may choose to return to the location where they were purchased for a refund.

Rainbow Farm eggs were distributed by the farm itself, as well as at the following locations:

  • Bar Harbor (Eden) Farmers Market
  • Blue Hill Farmers Market
  • Northeast Harbor Farmers Market
  • Stonington Farmers Market
  • FarmDrop

About Salmonellosis

Salmonellosis is an infection caused by the bacteria salmonella, which is a leading cause of diarrheal illness in the United States. Symptoms typically begin 6 to 72 hours after exposure and can include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Headache

Health and Safety Guidelines

If you believe you may have consumed eggs from Rainbow Farm and are experiencing symptoms of salmonellosis, it is recommended that you:

  1. Consult your health care provider: A doctor may request a stool sample to confirm the diagnosis.
  2. Avoid handling food: If you are a food handler, child care worker, or health care worker, do not report to work while sick with salmonellosis to prevent the spread of the bacteria.
  3. Treatment: Most individuals with salmonellosis recover without treatment; however, severe cases may require antibiotics.

Salmonellosis is a reportable disease. Cases should be reported to the Maine CDC at 1-800-821-5821.
