Just a week after a massive 12 million pound meat recall was announced, two more recalls have hit stores. This week, Trader Joe’s informed customers that its suppliers for two popular products—frozen waffles and green onions—have initiated voluntary recalls. The products are part of more extensive recalls involving frozen breakfast products and green onions in major retailers nationwide.

Illinois-based company Treehouse Foods issued a voluntary recall of three flavors of Trader Joe’s frozen waffles due to the potential for contamination with listeria monocytogenes. While Trader Joe’s supplier for green onions, Church Brothers Farms, issued a recall, due to potential salmonella contamination.

Trader Joe’s Product Recall Details

The recall affects these items with the listed product details:

  • Frozen Waffles: Trader Joe’s 11-ounce Blueberry Waffles, Trader Joe’s 11-ounce Gluten Free Toaster Waffles, and Trader Joe’s 9.9-ounce Pumpkin Waffles with a best-by date of Oct. 1, 2024, through Oct. 11, 2025, have been affected by the recall. Images of the label can be found on the Trader Joe’s website.
  • Green Onions: 6-ounce fresh packages of green onions with lot code: CB272378 and a pack-on date of Sept. 25, 2024, are affected in this recall. The green onions were distributed to the following states: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, DC, and Wisconsin. The product comes in a Trader Joe’s labeled bag with the pack date listed on the back of the bag. Photos of the product can be found on the Trader Joe’s website

Trader Joe’s says there are currently no reports of illnesses related to these products, but customers should not eat them. If you have any of these products in your refrigerator or freezer, Trader Joe’s urges you to discard them or return them to the store for a full refund.

Questions or concerns can be directed to the respective company that issued the recall. Customers can reach TreeHouse Foods at 1-800-596-2903 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST or Church Brothers Farms at 1-877-590-0428 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST, or by emailing consumerinfo@churchbrothers.com.

Democrats Warn It May Take At Least 4 Years To Count Ballots

babylonbee.com

U.S. — With the presidential election less than two weeks away, top Democrats warned the American people that it could be some time before we know who the winner is because it may take at least four years to count all of the ballots.

Though other, far less-developed countries have been able to count all ballots by hand in much shorter periods of time, Democrats stressed the very real likelihood that counting all the ballots in swing states would probably last until the 2028 presidential election.

“You just can’t rush this type of thing,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. “We’re talking about a very complicated process of counting. It starts with 1, proceeds on to 2, then 3, and so on. These numbers get very large. When you run out of fingers and toes, it gets even more confusing. Plus, you have to account for the fact that we’ll need to wait and find out how many votes we need to come up with. I’m afraid we won’t know who the winner of the presidential election is until everyone starts voting to elect the following president.”

Political experts agreed that the chances of knowing who won on election night were slim. “You can’t expect counting to happen quickly like it’s something people have been doing since they were babies,” said one analyst. “Asking the most advanced country in the world to be able to count ballots in less than four years is unreasonable.”

At publishing time, election officials in swing states assured the public that everyone would almost certainly know the results of the presidential race by the time George R.R. Martin publishes The Winds of Winter.

Pilot of Rescue Flight for Pets Impacted by Hurricanes Adopts Kitten, Finding ‘Love at 30,000 Feet’

On October 12th, a Southwest Airlines pilot fell in love with a little kitten named Avery while transporting him and 150 other shelter animals out of the path of hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Partnering with a charity and an animal rescue, the plan was to take the dogs and cats to Milwaukee from Florence, South Carolina, where they could continue their goal of finding homes for them.

However, Avery couldn’t wait ’till landing, and managed to latch onto Captain Prebis before he made it to Milwaukee.

“It was love at 30,000 feet. I don’t think Captain Matt was expecting to adopt a hurricane evacuee from Tennessee when he agreed to fly this amazingly special flight, but some things are meant to be,” Lucky Dog Animal Rescue CEO Mirah A. Horowitz said in a statement to PEOPLE.

“Avery the kitten is definitely a Lucky Cat and was right at home with his new dad in the cockpit once we landed and parked.”

The over 150 cats and dogs had been in the care of animal shelters in eastern Tennessee and Florida prior to the two hurricanes. To secure their safety and ensure the impacted organizations could serve the needs of their communities, the shelter pets were transferred to Lucky Dog Animal Rescue’s Rescue Campus in Florence.credit – Greater Good Charities/Ray Aguilar

Once in Florence, the animals then boarded the emergency flight, done pro bono by Southwest, in partnership with Greater Good Charities to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport in Wisconsin.

Earlier in the week, Greater Good Charities delivered humanitarian aid, including shampoo, hygiene products, and emergency packs filled with mylar blankets, socks, laundry sheets, and more for displaced and impacted families in Asheville, NC, and surrounding communities. These emergency packs were included in 6,000 pounds of aid items flown via Southwest Cargo free of charge.

According to news releases from both the nonprofit and Southwest Airlines, the animals were transported to various shelters around the state and are ready to be adopted.

They can be found at Wisconsin’s Humane Animal Welfare Society, Elmbrook Humane Society, The Washington County Humane Society, the Humane Society of Jefferson County, the Dane County Humane Society, Eau Claire Community Humane Association, Green County Humane Society, and Illinois’ One Tail at a Time, among others.

“We are truly grateful to Southwest Airlines for making this flight possible because it gives breathing room to shelters dealing with unprecedented numbers of animals displaced by the storm who need care until they can be reunited with their owners,” Horowitz added.

Project Santa of Denton completed its 66th year for delivering toys, food and clothing to families and children in need in Davidson and eastern Rowan counties.

Project Santa began 66 years ago with a $25 bonus check starts in October as volunteers go and visit each family to assess their need for Christmas. Volunteers continue visiting families in need throughout December, even as late as Christmas Eve.

This year Project Santa provided Christmas gifts to 456 underprivileged children covering 191 families in Davidson and eastern Rowan counties. The project delivered Christmas gifts to 174 children in Eastern Rowan County covering 76 families. Project Santa, being a Christian-based organization offers Bibles to those families that may need one. This year, Project Santa provided over 201 Bibles to children and adults.

Food was also provided to 67 families in eastern Rowan County from the project. Project Santa received a grant in 2023 from the Food Lion Feeds Grant Foundation in the amount of $2,000 back in June of 2023 which was used to help purchase food from the local food chain Food Lion. On Dec. 14, 10 Food Lion store managers, along with many local volunteers from Denton, assembled 168 food boxes that were handed out on Dec. 15 and 16.

Clothing was also available for those children and families in need thru the Project Santa clothing closet and food pantry which is open all year round for those in need, provided 71 new coats to children and adults and provided new jeans and many other articles of clothing. In all, 508 individuals received clothing from the Project Santa Clothing closet during the Christmas season.

Project Santa for the past 16 years has worked out of the St. Matthews Lutheran Church Boy Scout hut to cover the Eastern Rowan County area from Dec. 22 thru Christmas Eve.

Project Santa would like to thank all the individuals, churches and businesses who donated their time, talents, and financial resources to make Project Santa a success in 2023. Your kindness and generosity helped make Christmas very bright for many underprivileged children and their families on Christmas morning.

2 minutes

Donna Maddox took the ride of a lifetime at age 94, racing around the Michigan International Speedway in a Ferrari and hitting 150 miles per hour—proving it’s never to late to chase your dreams.

A true daredevil at heart, she once pushed her Lincoln to 115 MPH.

“My mother used to say I came into this world running,” she joked, while reflecting on her journey.

“If you’re alive, then live.” It’s a mantra she’s followed from the start.

Donna has always been on the lookout for her next adrenaline rush and her adventurous spirit has been a constant throughout her life. She climbed the Smoky Mountains and explored caves in her younger years—always living life at full throttle.

It’s been a dream of hers to hit the speedway in her home state, whether in a Ferrari or Bugatti, and the opportunity proved that age is not necessarily a roadblock when it comes to pursuing your passion.

The adventure was made possible by a program at her retirement home, Waltonwood Twelve Oaks in the city of Novi, outside Detroit. Their Adventure Program encourages residents to pursue their dreams, and helps make it a reality.

“Donna is also such a joy to talk to and is incredibly passionate about encouraging others to chase their dreams, as well” said a spokesperson.

“UPDATE”Outbreak Investigation of E. coli O157:H7: McDonald’s Quarter Pounders (October 2024) | FDA

Outbreak Investigation of E. coli O157:H7: McDonald’s Quarter Pounders (October 2024)

Outbreak Investigation

www.fda.gov

Taylor Farms recalls certain yellow onions sent to food service/restaurants. Investigators continue working to confirm the source of the outbreak.

Product

A specific ingredient has not yet been confirmed as the source of the outbreak, but most sick people report eating McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burgers. Investigators are working to determine if the slivered onions or beef patties on Quarter Pounder burgers are the likely source of contamination. McDonald’s has temporarily stopped using Quarter Pounder slivered onions and beef patties in affected states. Diced onions and other types of beef patties used at McDonald’s have not been implicated in this outbreak. Additionally, Taylor Farms has initiated a voluntary recall of some onions sent to food service customers. Customers who are impacted have been contacted directly.

Symptoms of E. coli

Symptoms begin anywhere from a few days after consuming contaminated food or up to nine days later. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting. Some infections can cause severe bloody diarrhea and lead to life-threatening conditions, such as a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), or the development of high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and neurologic problems.

Stores Affected

McDonald’s stores in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, and portions of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma have temporarily stopped using Quarter Pounder slivered onions and beef patties.

At this time, FDA is not aware of any cases or affected product outside of the United States.

Status

Ongoing; updates will be provided as they become available.

Recommendation

  • Consumers who have already eaten at McDonald’s and have symptoms of E. coli infection should contact their health care provider to report their symptoms and receive care immediately.
  • McDonald’s stores in affected states have temporarily stopped using Quarter Pounder slivered onions and beef patties. Diced onions and other types of beef patties used at McDonald’s have not been implicated in this outbreak.
  • Food service customers should not eat, sell, or serve Taylor Farms recalled yellow onions and should follow FDA’s safe handling and cleaning advice and use extra care in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces and containers that may have come in contact with recalled product to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Customers should also ensure that they did not freeze recalled onions or foods containing recalled onions.

Current Update

October 25, 2024

The FDA, USDA FSIS, CDC, and state partners continue to work quickly and collaboratively to investigate and identify the source of illnesses linked to E. coli contamination in McDonald’s Quarter Pounders.

As of October 24, 75 people infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 have been reported from 13 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from Sept 27, 2024, to October 10, 2024. Of 61 people with information available, 22 have been hospitalized, and 2 people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can cause kidney failure. One death has been reported from an older adult in Colorado. Of the 42 people interviewed, all 42 (100%) report eating at McDonald’s, and 39 people report eating a beef hamburger.

FDA is using all available tools to confirm if onions are the source of this outbreak. This includes working with federal and state partners and the companies involved to collect and evaluate records and distribution information as part of our traceback investigation. FDA and state partners are also collecting onion samples for analysis.

While the investigation is ongoing, Taylor Farms, the supplier of slivered onions for the affected McDonald’s locations, has initiated a voluntary recall. Recalled yellow onions were sold to additional food service customers. Customers who received recalled onions have been directly notified of the recall.

FDA is working closely with the implicated firms and will continue to provide updates as they become available, including any additional recalls or notifications that might be needed for recipients of recalled onions.

At this time, FDA is not aware of any cases or affected product outside of the United States.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Previous Update

October 22, 2024

The FDA, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections. A specific ingredient has not yet been confirmed as the source of the outbreak, but most sick people report eating McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burger varieties.

Investigators are working to determine if the slivered onions or beef patties on Quarter Pounder burgers are the likely source of this outbreak.

Preliminary traceback and distribution information reviewed by FDA shows that slivered onions served on Quarter Pounders are a likely source of contamination. FDA is working quickly to confirm that these onions are a source of this outbreak and to determine if these onions were served or sold at other businesses. McDonald’s has temporarily stopped using this type of onion in these states. Diced onions used at McDonald’s are not implicated in this outbreak.

FSIS is conducting traceback on hamburger patties served at McDonald’s in affected states to determine if ground beef is a source of illness. McDonald’s has also temporarily stopped selling Quarter Pounder beef patties in affected states, while the investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the outbreak.

This advisory will be updated as additional information becomes available.

Soft Targets: Giant Lithium-ion Batteries Perfect For Enemy Hacker Attacks

The remote targeting and detonation of the pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah terrorists has shaken security experts around the globe. What else might be targeted, they muse?

Well, obviously enough, distributed wind and solar power generation systems which are all connected to the Internet (in one way or another) provide pretty decent targets for malign foreign actors keen to wreck their enemies’ power supply. But, what really has them excited, is the ability to set off the lithium-ion batteries used to store the power occasionally generated by wind turbines and solar panels.

Their explosive power and thermodynamic properties are well-known. And they hardly need much encouragement to burst into toxic fireballs, that burn for days and which are impossible to extinguish. Thermal runaway events happen all by themselves.

As the team from Jo Nova details below, with hundreds of thousands of batteries installed all over this country, we have set ourselves up as the perfect target for enemy hacker attacks.

What if a foreign hacker could turn home batteries into “pager-bombs” but 7,500 times bigger?

You think exploding pagers was a wicked trick….

Hypothetically, suppose you were distracted while you tried to change tropospheric jet streams, and accidentally gave away your national manufacturing to a foreign adversary. Next thing you know, you’re buying the batteries they make, and installing them in essential grid infrastructure and thousands of homes. You’re patting yourself on the back for getting a cheap deal (never mind the slaves) and it all seems dandy until one sunny day, a leader who was cheesed off with a trade deal, quietly switched off the “overcharge protection” on all of them remotely.

At that point, millions of solar panels are pumping excess electricity into batteries that have no safety cut off. A few houses start to go off like popcorn, and an hour later we’re all living at the Western Front.

Brian Craighead – chief executive of Energy Renaissance, has come to warn us — it’s a hidden threat to national security. He says Australia has already installed 220,000 batteries that were made in potentially unfriendly places, and each home battery has roughly 7,500 times as much energy as a pager. As he remarks: “overcharge is when all hell breaks loose”.

Now, he happens to sell secure battery management systems — so he has an interest in scaring the socks off Energy Ministers and hyping things up, but ask yourself this: would Anthony Albanese have seen this coming?

To ask the question is to know we’re in trouble.

Energy entrepreneur says Australia’s solar and battery boom is a ‘clear and present danger’
    By Jared Lynch, The Australian

“When everyone talks about battery safety, we tend to think about the chemical stuff – these fires that you see on videos of Tesla cars going up. But those are relatively unusual. The key thing to focus on is battery software … that’s what protects them from overcharging.

“Let’s say you were a bad actor from a bad country, here’s what you could do, and this would be horribly easy. For example, you could say on January 7, 2025, I’m going to turn off the overcharge on 200,000 batteries installed in homes in Australia. Nothing is going to happen until then.”

It would make a great movie, but a lousy life:

“A co-ordinated attack exploiting these vulnerabilities could lead to widespread fires, explosions, and a crippling of our energy infrastructure. The risk extends beyond individual homes. Large, imported grid-connected batteries are becoming integral to Australia’s national energy grid. These massive storage systems, often managed by foreign-developed software, could be susceptible to cyber-attacks or sabotage, posing a threat to national security and public safety.

“There’s a clear and present danger.”

As Craighead says (so colorfully) — it’s like pink-batts on steroids. (A program here in Australia where a Big Government-made bubble in home insulation killed 3 poorly trained people and set fire to 200 homes.)

In the end, after the bombs and the blackouts, the hit to the GDP and the death toll — it will all be deemed a dreadful accident, due to a fault in a minor part, and a hot day caused by climate change. Everyone will know what happened, but no one will want to risk the lobster-wine-coal-barley-beer-students deal, and besides the nation needs to order new fridges and solar panels.

Unless, of course the home-battery-bombs were a decoy in a larger hostile plan, in which case we’ll have bigger things to worry about.

    Speaking of which:

The US banned the Pentagon from buying batteries from six Chinese manufacturers earlier this year.

Trends In Atlantic Cat 5 Huricanes

    iowaclimate.org

    By Paul Homewood

    .

Graphic showing the increasing number of category three, four and five hurricanes in the North Atlantic

    .

You will recall this graph from the latest piece of BBC disinformation about hurricanes. As I wrote the other day:

The apparent increase in major Atlantic hurricanes since 1920 is due to the fact that we now have satellites to observe them in mid-ocean. This is why there is a step change in the 1990s.”

    This is the full list:

    https://s.w-x.co/util/image/w/cat5-1924-2023-list.jpg?v=ap&w=980&h=551

    .

BBC customers would see that graph and naturally assume that hurricanes are getting stronger, (despite that weaselly qualification at the bottom). But prior to satellites and robust hurricane hunter aircraft, most Cat 5 hurricanes could only be identified as such at or close to landfall. And if we only plot these storms, we get a completely different picture:

    image

If anything, Cat 5 hurricanes were much more frequent at times in the past – notably the 1930s.

Since Dean and Felix in 2007, the only year with two Cat 5s, there have been just three – Irma, Michael and Dorian, in 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively. Put another way, there have been just three in the past seventeen years.

This completely destroys the BBC’s deliberately misleading chart.

Andrew Hagen and Chris Landsea are two of the leading hurricane researchers in the US. Back in 2012, they published this paper, which looked at the issues surrounding the impact of changes in how we monitor hurricanes:

    image

    ABSTRACT
An investigation is conducted to determine how improvements in observing capabilities and technology may
have affected scientists’ ability to detect and monitor Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale Category 5 hurricanes
in the Atlantic Ocean basin during the mid-twentieth century. Previous studies state that there has been an increase
in the number of intense hurricanes and attribute this increase to anthropogenic global warming. Other studies
claim that the apparent increased hurricane activity is an artifact of better observational capabilities and improved
technology for detecting these intense hurricanes. The present study focuses on the 10 most recent Category 5
hurricanes recorded in the Atlantic, from Hurricane Andrew (1992) through Hurricane Felix (2007). These 10
hurricanes are placed into the context of the technology available in the period of 1944–53, the first decade of
aircraft reconnaissance. A methodology is created to determine how many of these 10 recent Category 5 hurricanes
likely would have been recorded as Category 5 if they had occurred during this period using only the observations
that likely would have been available with existing technology and observational networks. Late-1940s and early-
1950s best-track intensities are determined for the entire lifetime of these 10 recent Category 5 hurricanes. It is
found that likely only 2 of these 10—both Category 5 landfalling hurricanes—would have been recorded as Cat-
egory 5 hurricanes if they had occurred during the late-1940s period. The results suggest that intensity estimates for
extreme tropical cyclones prior to the satellite era are unreliable for trend and variability analysis

Their map is particularly relevant – (RMW is Radius of Maximum Wind):

    image

Apart from Andrew and Mitch, all hit Cat 5 speeds well away from land.

And they conclude that only those two of the ten hurricanes would have been classified as Cat 5s using 1940s technologies – Andrew, which hit Florida as Cat 5; and Mitch, which passed close to the north coast of Honduras.

Using 1950s methods, Felix would also have made Cat 5.

It is also worth noting that even though these three would have been called Cat 5s, the wind speeds estimated for 1940s technology were still less than officially recorded now. Mitch, for instance, is officially 15kts higher than the 1940s estimate.

    image

Hagen & Landsea explain all of this very succinctly:

    image

Note that Cat 4 hurricanes also have been understated in the past.

I have already complained to the BBC about their article, and in particular the graph. Will they ignore what the real hurricane scientists say?

I think we all know the answer to that!
