“1.5 to Stay Alive” Revisited: Only the tips of her fingers are above water – Petchary’s Blog
I am happy that I came across a Facebook post from Jimmy Fletcher, Founder of the Caribbean Climate Justice Project. Do take the time to explore the Project’s website, which is rich and inspiring.
Dr. Fletcher is a Climate Envoy to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and former St. Lucian government minister. He shared this beautiful and touching painting by Jonathan Gladding, which depicts the current state – hopes and anxieties – of the “1.5 to Stay Alive” campaign that Dr. Fletcher co-founded. I look back at that period with a kind of nostalgia; there was a sense of goals to be reached, still doable, and a kind of optimism. The marvellous Jamaican reggae singer Aaron Silk sang the anthem song most powerfully at COP21 in Paris in 2015, and toured Jamaica with Voices for Climate Change, an impactful collaboration among artistes, community members, and environmental defenders. Spearheaded by the NGO Panos Caribbean, with support from the Planning Institute of Jamaica, the World Bank, and others, I would love to see such a project happen again, if funds allowed.
Three years after the encouraging Paris meeting, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) produced a Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 Degrees, in which it stated that the 1.5 target was still doable – but only if the world did something of a drastic “U turn.” This would involve “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society“ and “deep emissions reductions.”
OK. Well, we know this has not yet happened, and the urgency is greater than ever.
But the Caribbean has not given up hope. It is still fighting for climate justice for the people. It has no choice. Below are the comments by Dr. James Fletcher:

To commemorate World Environment Day 2026, the Caribbean Climate Justice Project (CCJP) reached out to Saint Lucian artist Jonathan Gladding to do a 1.5 To Stay Alive painting that reflected the urgency of the climate crisis.
This is the fourth painting that Jonathan has done on this subject. The first painting, which was inspired by the late Yves Renard, was done to coincide with the negotiations at COP21 that yielded the Paris Agreement.
This current painting shows a young girl being submerged in the rising sea water, with the sea level higher than it has been in any of the previous 3 paintings. Completely submerged is her doll, reflecting the loss of childhood, innocence and heritage. The 1.5 pendant on her necklace is also submerged, a consequence of the temporary overshoot of 1.5 degrees Celsius that we experienced in 2024. Three of the fingers that she uses to make the 1.5 sign are also beneath the water level.
In the background can be seen the raging forest fires on land, demonstrating the multiple impacts of the climate crisis. Below the water level we can also see flowers, which depict the effect the climate catastrophe is having on biodiversity.
However, her hair is adorned with flowers and madras, showing that it is not too late and we can still save our heritage, our culture, our biodiversity, and the small island developing states in which we live.
In case you are wondering, I did not give Jonathan any instructions about what to depict or how to interpret the climate crisis. The imagery is all his. I am merely interpreting the brilliant and very accurate images that he has provided in this beautiful painting.
Thank you very much Jonathan for this awesome painting and for the previous 3 paintings in this series. We truly appreciate your support.

From the website:
June 14: Rise Up, Sing Out
A Concert for the First Amendment. An Evening to Build Community.
While the Committee for the First Amendment leads and hosts this powerful concert, Indivisible and No Kings are proud to partner with them to build the durable, hyper-local infrastructure our movement needs to win and counter the president’s spectacle. On June 14, the national concert event celebrates the freedoms that belong to all of us: speech, assembly, protest, religion, press, and expression.
Across the country, communities will gather for local watch parties to sing along, make art, share food, connect with neighbors, and take meaningful action together.
Join a Rise Up, Sing Out event near you — or host one in your community.
The Work Continues
America has a long history, rooted in white supremacy, of suppressing the rights of people of color. But our history also clearly shows that people-powered movements are how we end authoritarianism.
Throughout 2026, in the face of unprecedented attacks, millions of us joined together in our communities and held the largest single day of morally grounded, nonviolent direct actions by any movement in US history. Each time we show up, we disrupt President Trump’s attempts to rule through repression and remind the country, and the world, that people power is our path to a truly free America.
Authoritarians want fear, silence, and isolation. We choose joy. We choose community. We choose people power.
Rise Up, Sing Out is about reclaiming patriotism as something inclusive, participatory, and rooted in care for one another — not power, pageantry, or one person’s spotlight.
_________
There will be a concert at Town Hall in New York City, 7:30 pm ET; tickets are available for purchase.
You can also find and join a watch party, host a watch party, or watch the concert from home.
All details are available on the web site. https://www.nokings.org.
We’ll be cheering everyone on from the comfort of our home.
Note: In a weak moment, I was moved to capture my kitchen scenario that seems to resonate with our resistance efforts.
NO KINGS!!
