The United Nations refugee agency has called on mainly Tutsi rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to ensure the rights of 10,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) amid reports that they are being pressured to go back to their villages.

The United Nations today launched a year-long advocacy campaign to help scores of millions of internally displaced persons (IDPs), focusing on mitigating the impact of conflict and natural disasters that drive so many people from their homes within their own country in what Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called “one of the greatest humanitarian challenges we face.”

The United Nations said today it has dispatched another major food convoy into the Vanni region of northern Sri Lanka, as part of the continuing humanitarian aid effort to assist some 230,000 people uprooted by recent clashes.

Sixteen refugee families living in Liberia now have a place to call home thanks to the efforts of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) which funded the rehabilitation of 32 houses for Sierra Leoneans who cannot go back to their homeland or are unwilling to repatriate.

The United Nations has appealed for nearly $10 million in urgent humanitarian aid to assist communities hit by recent floods in Laos that have damaged farmland, infrastructure and the homes of over 200,000 people.

United Nations humanitarian agencies are assisting the Lao Government to bring relief to more than 150,000 people who have been affected by some of the worst flooding in a century in the South-East Asian country.
