Orbisk helps professional kitchens to get a grip on their food waste with its fully automated food waste monitor.

Over ons

Orbisk is a start-up on a mission to make the world food system more sustainable. We do this by using progressive and innovative technology. One of today's biggest challenges is food waste. Worldwide about one-third of all food produced is wasted. Looking at The Netherlands, for the hospitality industry alone, this adds up to 150 million kilos per year! Our integral solution provides hospitality organizations with a complete insight into their food waste. And by doing so help them cut their waste in half. For this we make maximum use of recent developments in computer vision and AI. Our smart camera on top of the waste bin, connected to a scale, will automatically register all food being that is being thrown away up to the ingredient level. Orbisk has been recognized in LinkedIn's 2024 Top Startups list in The Netherlands!

Updates

  • At Gemeente Amersfoort, Gregory Heijmerink is Vermaat's Location Manager. He was already using Orbisk before he arrived. He'd worked with the system in a previous role and brought the habit with him. The habit: checking in from Wednesday onward, treating Thursday as a lighter day, and keeping Friday's offering to a minimum by the time service starts. Every week, the AI Culinary Advisor flags where the next bit of waste is most likely coming from, a category, a day, part of a day, and suggests a specific target. Gregory decides whether to act on it. Accept it, and it tracks itself from there. Over three years: more than 3,000 kg of food saved, a roughly 30% average reduction per guest, and his Friday waste score cut by roughly 65% during the measurement period. "Since Orbisk was installed, you really start to see in the numbers what you're actually throwing away," he says. #FoodWaste #HotelFB #CateringIndustry #Sustainability

  • Prime rib. House blend. The Tuesday sauce. Every kitchen has its own words for what's on the menu, and no generic ingredient list captures all of it. With Custom Labels, you can create, rename, move, and merge ingredients to match your kitchen's workflow: in seconds. - Prime rib sitting under "red meat"? Split it out. - Five sauces lumped into one bucket? Merge or separate them. It updates everywhere in your dashboard, and you're free to change it again anytime. Your data speaks your kitchen's language, so what you see is exactly what you can act on. #FoodWasteIntelligence #HotelFB #RestaurantOps #KitchenOperations

  • It's Food Waste Free Week in the Netherlands. This week, we ran a webinar with Vermaat looking at one specific moment: the last production day of the week, where the data shows the problem, and peer knowledge solves it. Live polls kept the room guessing before every reveal. Two Vermaat speakers, Gregory Heijmerink (Location Manager at Gemeente Amersfoort) and Annie Raggers (Horeca Manager at CAK), then took the floor to share what's actually worked at their locations, sharing their experience and inspiring others. Since 2019, that habit of comparing notes has helped Vermaat reach a 43% average reduction across 95 locations, and prevent more than 41,000 kg of food waste. It started with one small pilot, and has grown into how Vermaat approaches food waste today: less about a single target handed down, more about what one kitchen learns and passes to the next." The session finished with an open invitation: an eight-week focus on the last production day, not a competition, just a shared push toward the same target. Organised by Orbisk. Proven by Vermaat. #VerspillingsvrijeWeek #FoodWaste #KitchenOperations #Orbisk

“Zero Waste” Is the Wrong Goal I don't think zero waste is the right goal for a kitchen. "Zero waste" is simple and easy to rally around. But kitchens aren't simple systems. A pineapple has a crown. Fish have bones. Guests leave food on plates. Reduce all of that to one number, and you miss the more useful question: why did it happen? For years, I focused on the bin. Repurpose more. Donate more. Compost more. Throw away less. Those things still matter. But by the time food reaches the bin, most of the decisions that created the waste have already happened. Someone forecast demand, set the par, chose the batch size, designed the portion. The bin is just where those decisions become visible. That's why measurement became more interesting to me. With Orbisk | Zero Food Waste I'm not just told how many kilograms went into a bin. I can see the pattern behind it. Why does the same item keep appearing? Are we producing to habit rather than demand? So maybe the better goal isn't zero. It's understanding what's avoidable, what isn't, and reducing the waste created by decisions we can actually influence: a better forecast, a smaller batch, a redesigned buffet, a prep practice nobody's questioned in years. An evidence-based kitchen shouldn't punish every gram that reaches a bin. It should tell the difference between unavoidable waste and preventable loss. Orbisk helps me see the evidence. I still have to lead what happens next. Zero makes a great headline. I'd rather build a kitchen that understands why something went into the bin in the first place. #FoodWaste #FoodWasteReduction #CulinaryLeadership #SustainableHospitality #HospitalityIndustry

With the Food Waste Free Week taking place in the Netherlands this week, it feels like the right moment to look at what reducing food waste can actually mean in hotel operations.🌍 One thing we keep noticing when speaking with hotels is that sustainability is still too often discussed as something that costs time, money, or operational effort. But some of the strongest solutions do exactly the opposite. At Novotel Amsterdam City, Orbisk | Zero Food Waste made it visible what was being wasted, when it was being wasted, and why. That allowed the kitchen team to make decisions based on data instead of assumptions. 📊 After 12 months: • 33% less food waste • 5,300 kg of food saved • €27,000 saved • 10,000+ kg of CO₂ prevented For us, this is what future-ready hospitality should look like. Not sustainability as a separate project, but solutions that improve both impact and day-to-day operations. 🌱 We are curious: 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮? #FutureReadyHospitality #FoodWaste #HotelOperations #SustainableHospitality

  • It's Food Waste Free Week in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 From the start, we've been a partner of Stichting Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling (Food Waste Free United) in tackling food waste, and we still are. A week is enough to make a point. It's not enough to run a kitchen on. If every Dutch household hit zero food waste for the week, it would save almost 18 million meals. On average, each of us throws away 25.5kg of food a year. Commercial kitchens face the same gap, every single service, not just this week. That's what Orbisk exists to close. Not a commitment for seven days. Visibility for the rest of the year. #VerspillingsvrijeWeek #FoodWaste #HotelFB #Sustainability #Orbisk

I'm happy to announce that Neil Anderson stepping into the Chief Commercial Officer role. 🙌 Neil and I have worked together twice before (at Soly and JD.COM). And now for a third time at Orbisk | Zero Food Waste. It took me some months to convince him (and his wife Claire, little one Ro, and fur baby Cleo) to move back to Amsterdam from London. But I am so excited and grateful for Neil and his family's trust and belief in the mission of what we're building. Beyond Neil’s commercial acumen, what matters just as much to me is the trust we have built over the years and how closely our values align. There are very few people I would choose to build alongside again and again. Neil is one of them. He is someone I would happily walk through the trenches with. Welcome to the team Neil! Excited for this next chapter at Orbisk | Zero Food Waste and to continue building alongside this awesome team. 💚 Olaf Orane Bart Teun Neil

  • Finding the right person is exciting. Finding someone who already knows why the mission matters is rarer. We are happy to say that Neil Anderson has joined Orbisk as our new Chief Commercial Officer Orbisk is scaling fast, and that means the sales conversation has to scale with it: more markets, more decision-makers, more people who need to see the case clearly and quickly. "I've spent most of my career building and leading commercial teams across both large corporates and high-growth startups, but my real passion is helping scale ambitious, meaningful businesses like Orbisk. I love the product and our mission." The goal hasn't changed. More kitchens, less waste, just faster than before. Welcome to Orbisk, Neil.
