My Friend the Tree – A Nostalgic Road Trip Through the 1970s • From “Chopper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms”

As Alexandra sings from the car radio, a family waits for their father’s workday to end. What begins as an ordinary drive home becomes an atmospheric journey through 1970s Germany.

A nostalgic memory from Chopper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms

Some songs are like time machines.

The moment the first notes of My Friend the Tree by Alexandra begin to play, memories of a long-lost world come flooding back. A world of country roads, car radios, cigarette smoke, and family trips in the family car.

One chapter from “Chopper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms” takes readers right back to that time.

The Bus Driver’s End of the Day

As she often does, Jasper’s mother drives into town to pick up her husband after work.

Jasper’s father works as a bus driver for the local transit company. The routine is always the same: she parks outside the bus depot and waits patiently while he spends a little extra time with his colleagues.

Maybe for one beer.

Maybe two.

Possibly a few more.

Inside the car, everything feels unmistakably 1970s.

Little Volker is asleep on the rear parcel shelf beneath the sloping rear window. Jasper’s mother smokes a Lord Extra cigarette and gazes calmly through the open window.

From the car radio comes a song that millions of Germans knew at the time: “My Friend the Tree” by Alexandra.

A Song Full of Memories

When Alexandra released the song in 1968, it quickly became one of the most beloved German-language hits of its era.

The lyrics tell the story of losing a cherished tree and are often regarded as an early tribute to nature, home, and the emotional bonds people form with familiar places.

That is exactly why the song fits this scene so perfectly.

While Jasper’s mother quietly hums along, the youngest son sleeps peacefully behind her, and the evening traffic slowly begins to build outside.

Driving Home Through Forests and Villages

Eventually, Jasper’s father appears.

Slightly unsteady on his feet.

An HB cigarette between his fingers.

With a satisfied sigh, he settles into the passenger seat.

His first question is immediate: „What’s for dinner? I’m starving.“

The answer comes without hesitation: „Pork chops.“

Moments later, the Ford pulls away.

The drive home covers about eight miles through the rolling Hessian countryside, passing dense forests, open fields, and small villages.

It is a journey that once felt entirely ordinary but today seems like a trip into another era.

The Magic of Small Memories

It is not dramatic events that make this chapter special.

It is the little details:

  • the car radio
  • the Lord Extra cigarette
  • the HB cigarette
  • the sleeping younger brother
  • the bus driver’s end of the workday
  • the winding country road
  • and Alexandra singing through the speakers

Together, they create a vivid portrait of everyday life in Germany during the 1970s.

Why This Chapter Resonates

“Chopper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms” thrives on moments exactly like these.

The novel is not about celebrities or spectacular events.

It is about real life.

About families.

About childhood.

About memories.

And about a time when a single song on the car radio could accompany an entire journey home.

Readers who lived through the 1970s will recognize many familiar images.

Those who did not will discover an authentic glimpse into a world that has almost disappeared.

A Humorous Chapter from “Chopper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms” – “Flying Milk”

A fascinating machine name, a milk container, and a freshly learned lesson about centrifugal force lead to an unfortunate experiment. When three liters of milk end up covering a parking lot, Jasper’s real adventure is only just beginning.

Flying Milk and the Fateful Force of Centrifugal Motion

A Humorous Childhood Memory from “Chopper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms”

Sometimes all it takes is three liters of milk and a healthy dose of childhood curiosity to turn an ordinary day into an unforgettable adventure.

In the chapter “Flying Milk” from the novel “Chopper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms”, readers follow young Jasper on what seems to be a simple errand from his mother: picking up fresh milk and eggs from a nearby farm.

Fresh Milk Straight from the Farm

The Borowski family farm sits right next to the local outdoor swimming pool and is a familiar destination for many residents of the neighborhood.

Between quacking ducks, clucking chickens, grunting pigs, and a barking chain dog, the farm bustles with activity. The friendly farmer’s wife knows all her customers and even keeps a handwritten notebook where purchases from local families are recorded.

But Jasper is fascinated by something entirely different.

Inside a white-tiled processing room, he discovers large stainless-steel tanks, pipes, pumps, and machinery. One particular name captures his imagination:

Alfa Laval.

He cannot explain why the name impresses him so much. It simply sounds important, technical, and exciting.

When Physics Strikes Back

Armed with fresh milk, ten eggs, and his change, Jasper begins the walk home.

As he crosses the empty parking lot beside the swimming pool, he hums and sings to himself:

„Alfa Laval … Alfa Laval …“

At the same time, he begins swinging the milk container playfully.

At first, only gently.

Then a little more boldly.

Soon the container is spinning in circles at the end of his outstretched arm.

His recent science lessons are still fresh in his mind. Before summer vacation, Mr. Grimm had taught the class about centrifugal force.

A fascinating term.

And an even more fascinating experiment.

At least for a few seconds.

Because suddenly Jasper finds himself holding only the handle.

The milk container breaks free, soars through the air, and crashes onto the asphalt.

Three liters of fresh milk instantly spread across the parking lot.

The centrifugal force is gone.

The disaster is complete.

The Real Problem Starts Now

Remarkably, the milk container survives the accident.

The lid can be screwed back on.

The handle can be reattached.

But the milk is gone.

And that is the real problem.

One thought immediately shoots through Jasper’s mind: „Mom is going to go crazy!“

With his heart pounding, only one solution remains: Back to the farm.

Now he has to explain how freshly purchased milk somehow ended up decorating a parking lot.

Childhood in the 1970s

The scene humorously captures everyday childhood life in the 1970s.

Back then, small errands were a normal part of family life. Children fetched milk from local farms, shopped at neighborhood stores, and ran household errands on bicycles.

These everyday adventures often led to the kinds of mishaps that seemed disastrous at the time but later became treasured childhood memories.

This unique blend of curiosity, adventure, and youthful recklessness is exactly what gives Chopper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms its charm.

Why This Chapter Resonates

“Flying Milk” combines humor, nostalgia, and everyday life into a story many readers will instantly recognize.

Who doesn’t remember a moment when a seemingly brilliant idea turned into complete chaos within seconds?

It is these authentic moments that make Jasper’s childhood adventures so vivid, relatable, and memorable.

– A Humorous Chapter from “Chopper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms” – “American Soldiers in the City”

When American soldiers arrive in the small town with their tanks next to the outdoor swimming pool, Jasper and his siblings find themselves in the middle of an unforgettable summer day full of adventure, surprises, and a meeting they will never forget. A warm-hearted journey back to 1970s West Germany – filled with childhood memories, family stories, adventure, and echoes of history.

The novel “Copper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms” tells a vivid and moving story about life in a large family in 1970s Hesse. Between financial worries, family crises, emotional turmoil, and countless adventures, the children experience moments they will never forget.

From the novel “Copper Bikes and Bell-Bottoms” When American tanks suddenly appeared in the small town.

“American Soldiers” – Childhood between tanks, military maneuvers, and Lucky Strike cigarettes

On a summer morning, the quiet suburban neighborhood is suddenly shaken awake by the roar of engines, clattering tank tracks, and the sound of gunfire. For Jasper and his siblings, an unforgettable adventure begins among harvested fields, military exercises, and curious encounters with American soldiers.

As German and U.S. tanks take position near the outdoor swimming pool, the children discover a completely new world: campfires, field kitchens, ration meals wrapped in aluminum foil, and real Lucky Strike cigarettes.

Particularly striking is their encounter with the friendly American soldiers, who give the children chocolate, cookies, and canned soup – an experience that leaves a lasting impression on their memories.

Childhood in the 1970s

This excerpt tells, with humor and nostalgia, of a time when children still roamed the fields for hours, collected spent shell casings, and turned every military exercise into a grand adventure.

Between Chopper Bikes, Bell-Bottom trousers, semolina pudding with cherries, and American soldiers, a vivid picture emerges of everyday life in West Germany during the Cold War.

The Novel

The autobiographical family novel vividly illustrates how financial hardship, shame, and despair can affect a family. At the same time, the story also tells of unity, childhood memories, and the small moments of hope in difficult times.

46 Jahre später – Der Franzose Richard Vimal, seine elektronische Musik und die Rückkehr meiner Jugend

46 Years Later – Richard Vimal, Electronic Music, and the Return of My Youth.

46 Years Later – Rediscovering Richard Vimal’s Electronic Music from the Past

Some music never truly disappears.
Sometimes it simply waits for the right moment to return.

After more than 46 years, I recently rediscovered the electronic music of Richard Vimal — and it felt like opening a forgotten door to the past.

The moment I heard those sounds again, memories from my teenage years instantly came flooding back. My old room. My family. The emotions of that time. It was all suddenly there again, as if the music had preserved those memories somewhere deep inside my mind.

That is the incredible power of music.

Long before modern streaming platforms and digital playlists, electronic music already created entire worlds of atmosphere, emotion, and imagination. Richard Vimal’s compositions carry exactly that unique feeling of another era — experimental, emotional, atmospheric, and timeless.

Even today, these sounds still feel fascinating and strangely modern.

Why This Music Still Feels Special

  • Atmospheric vintage electronic music
  • Powerful emotional nostalgia
  • A journey back into the 1980s
  • Rare sounds from another time
  • Music strongly connected to memory and emotion

Music and Memory

It is amazing how deeply music is connected to memory.
Sometimes a single melody can bring back entire moments of life that seemed long forgotten.

For me, hearing Richard Vimal again after 46 years was exactly one of those moments.

46 Jahre später – Richard Vimals elektronische Musik wiederentdeckt

Richard Vimal was born in Toulouse in August 1952. Since the early 70s of the last century, he has been active primarily as a musician, first in folk-rock realms, then increasingly in the field of electronics. With “Transparences” was released in 1977, a first, still quite folk-oriented album. In 1978, Vimal released a second, very electronic LP with “Migrations”, which was followed in 1980 by “Aquarythmies”. After that, not much was heard of Vimal, who then probably worked primarily as a composer of advertising film music, soundtrack, and film sound.
