My first week on intermittent fasting

Week one down for Intermittent Fasting! I was pretty worried the first day and how it would go- it was certainly a mental game. I kept thinking about the fact that I wasn't eating and I just kept chugging water. I thought that I would have to slowly ramp up to 16 hours over a few days so my original goal was 13 hours, but I drank my Hi Caf black tea for caffeine and ended up lasting 17 hours! By the time it was time to eat, I really wasn't even that hungry.

1/23 17 hours

Through some research, I learned of an app called LIFE and it has been really helpful! I can keep track of my fasts and there is a place to post messages if you have a question, need support, etc.

I'm realizing that IF is great for not snacking after dinner!

1/24 16.5 hours
1/25 17 hours

Saturday morning was the first day I worked out while fasting (the first couple days I would wait until the afternoon after I ate). I thought that I would be woozy or slow, but I ended up doing two MM100 workouts and I felt fine.

Saturday night we had a party at a friend's house for the Lunar New Year so I fasted Friday night through Saturday during the day but knew that I wouldn't be able to fast after drinking. Sure enough, we ended up going out to breakfast Sunday morning and there was only 9 hours between meals.

1/26 No fasting
1/27 19.5 hours

Today was my first day that I was FREEZING during the day. I had a blanket on my legs and a wrap around my shoulders, but still ended up increasing the temperature on the second floor so that I could work.

1/28 19.5

Making lunch around 2 or 3 is super easy- eggs! I love not having to think about making an elaborate lunch other than scrambling some eggs and eating fruit.

1/29 20 hours

I weighed in this morning and had lost 3 pounds since the previous Wednesday!

1/30 19.5 hours

I ended up making banana bars with chocolate chips out of very ripe bananas for the kids and then ended up eating one close to 9:45pm when they came out of the oven (they were for the kids). It tasted delicious, but I was sort of mad that I ate something so late because then it pushed my fast back.

1/31 16.5 hours

According to the app, I have fasted for 118 hours and have spent 40 hours in ketosis (basically the LIFE app says that you are in ketosis after 12 hours of not eating). This is EXTREMELY easy and I really think that it is something that I can do for better health and to lose weight. I haven't been hungry and my caffeine intake has decreased as I haven't really needed it. Win win!

Have you tried IF?

Ski trip

On Monday CP and I decided to take the kids skiing for the first time at Wilmot. We put Izzy in a full day ski school class, Wes into a 1.5 day class. We figured that we could go down some runs together and then would have to take turns watching Wes all afternoon long as he would refuse to ski. At first Wes didn't want to put on ski boots but I found some red ones and told him that he would look like Iron Man. (eye roll)

Ready for ski school!

CP and I had a great time for about an hour with not many lines and short runs. The blue (intermediate) and black (difficult) runs were fairly laughable compared to what we are used to in CO, but it was really nice to get out after 9 years (!!) of not skiing.

Around 11 we went to see how Wes was doing and found out that he was in the ski school building, refusing to participate in the last 30 minutes of the lesson. CP got him out and we asked him to show us what he had learned. He went down the short hill and then as he was trying to shuffle towards us on his skis, he fell and refused to get up without help.

Refusing to get up

Surprisingly, after asking him if he wanted to ride the magic carpet and ski with us, he was excited to do so. So we did a few runs of going up the magic carpet and then each holding a hand down a small hill. After lunch I got to do a few runs and then caught up with the boys. CP had Wes going down the small hill by himself and then catching him at the end because Wes had no idea how to stop.

Magic carpet ride

We ended up taking Wes on the "lifting chair" (his words) and down two runs. On his second ride on the lift chair, he realized halfway up that he had to go to the bathroom and started yelling. All of the chairs around us started laughing and we kept telling him that there was nothing we could do (he ended up holding it until we got down the hill and into the bathroom). That afternoon he didn't want to leave and ended up falling asleep within a minute of getting into the car.

Sleepy Wes

Meanwhile, Izzy had a fantastic day on the slopes. She started out in a basic level but moved up quickly as she caught on. During one of my runs I saw her in the chair lift in front of me so I guessed at which run she was on and surprised her. She was SO excited to see me and I was able to watch her ski long S curves down the hill. On the way home Izzy let us know that she wants to come back every weekend!!

Overall, the day was a big success!

2020 goals

Goals for 2020

1. Eat one vegetarian dinner a week.
I am mindful of how terrible meat is to our environment. We certainly eat more chicken and turkey than red meat these days, but it still has an effect. I generally don't control what we eat but will push for this change in 2020. I would even be okay if the meal is fish. :-)

2. Lose 25 pounds this year.
I am feeling reinvigorated in my goal to lose weight again. I had a goal before I turned 40, I met that goal, but then have slowly gained 10 pounds after I had to stop running in June. I'm back in the Weight Watchers app, tracking my food and paying attention again. I'm not happy in my clothes or my skin so it's time to get back on track.

3. Finish Morning Meltdown 100 by February 21st.
As of today I have completed 72 out of the 100 workouts- this is the LONGEST I have lasted on any Beachbody program! I love this program. I mean, I hate some of the days, but I push play anyway and then celebrate the days where I feel strong and I love the program. It took me 70 days to complete the first 50 workouts....I have exactly 52 days in 2020 to complete the last 50 workouts. I had two work trips already this month and I stayed dedicated but I really want to finish this workout before we leave for Hawaii on February 21st!

4. Get rid of my plantar fasciitis.
I should have known better than to run the 5k on Thanksgiving after I hadn't run since September. Continuing to do MM100 has not exactly helped but I really scale down my jumping- especially on cardio days. I'm just really sick of heel pain that lasts for months on end. My new Hoka One One shoes help, but I desperately need to do something. There is something called the "strechlab" coming to my town in March, so maybe I need to try that out?

5. Spend at least one day knocking on doors on a get-out-the-vote effort.
I want to make sure that I have done absolutely everything to get the orange asshole out of office. It's no longer enough to write a postcard or contact elected officials (which I will still do). I need to step up my level of effort in 2020, even if it makes me nervous.

6. Practice tennis with Izzy.
We have two tennis courts a few blocks away from our house...I just need to stay patient with her and remember that she will only get better with practice.

7. Try at least one day of Intermittent Fasting.
I've read some articles on the benefits and at a minimum it should keep me from snacking at night. I figure it can't hurt!

I should have more goals, but this seems like a good number since it is already almost the end of January. :-)

2019 Goals- how did I do?

Let's check in on my 2019 goals!

1. Eat at least one vegetarian dinner every week.
I don't really have control over this as CP is the person that cooks every night, but we did very poorly with this one. I would like to push for this in 2020.

2. Lose 25 pounds this year.
Well unfortunately this fall I backslid into TERRIBLE habits when I couldn't run anymore and while
I definitely work out more working from home, my daily step count is terrible. It has
turned into gaining weight....so now I have even more to lose in 2020. :-(

3. Work out for at least 30 minutes at least three times a week.
This has gone pretty well. I started Morning Meltdown 100 (MM100) through Beachbody this
fall and all of the workouts are less than 30 minutes. Even when I travel I can do the workouts
that don't require weights so I should hit workout #50 TODAY!

4. Continue monthly dates with CP.
We probably hit this.

5. Get our credit card balance to $0 this year.
Done! We hit this halfway through the year and have continued this even through
Christmas. Woo hoo!

6. Get a new job.
Done! I love my new job!

7. Continue to be politically active whether it is writing postcards to voters, contacting my
elected officials about things that are important to me, or participating in marches.
Still doing this. Will likely step up my game in 2020.

8. Run in at least three races this year including the Soldier Field 10 miler.
Done! This spring I did a 10kSoldier Field 10 miler, and a half marathon. On Thanksgiving
Day I powered through a turkey trot 5k which left me in pain from plantar fasciitis for days (I did
not run at all before the race). I have new shoes (Hoka One One) but still find myself in pain
because I do some jumping in MM100.

9. Run one race with Izzy this year.
Izzy sprained her ankle right before Thanksgiving so we couldn't do the turkey trot together (I
had signed her up for it). Maybe we can do a race next year?

Should have known better

Ugh. I did something really stupid about two months ago. We were invited over to a friend’s BBQ and impromptu soccer game (they are Costa Rican- I think they called it a milangro?). I started out the soccer game wearing sneakers but the game was being played in their side yard which had a slight hill to it and my sneakers tripped me up a few times. My friend noted that people are supposed to play in bare feet, so I took my shoes off. BIG MISTAKE.

My feet didn’t hurt during the game...in fact it was nice to run around in bare feet for once. But as soon as I woke up the next morning I knew I had made a huge mistake and my plantar fasciitis had reared its ugly head again. Since then I have tried running a few times and even set out to start my 15k running plan but decided that it wasn’t worth the pain.

So I am currently signed up for the Hot Chocolate 15k early next month but won’t be ready for it. I dropped down to the 5k this week since I could run that in my sleep (albeit slowly). I really like running the race and would feel weird wearing around the gear if I didn’t actually run....

What a bummer. I’m sick of PF being a constant in my life and always messing up my ability to run and enjoy it.

2019 goals- check-in

Let's check in on my 2019 goals!

1. Eat at least one vegetarian dinner every week.
Not doing well with this. I have less control as CP is the person to make all of our meals and we certainly eat less red meat than we did a few years ago, but we are not doing vegetarian meals as I had envisioned.

2. Lose 25 pounds this year.
Ha ha. Dammit. Losing weight is not happening. I've got 6 months to make this happen.

3. Work out for at least 30 minutes at least three times a week.
This has gone pretty well so far this year. Having to train for the races has kept me at least
running three times a week but since the half marathon in early June. Starting to travel for
work has screwed up my consistency but hopefully I can get back into it soon.

4. Continue monthly dates with CP.
We probably have gotten out once a month without the kids.

5. Get our credit card balance to $0 this year.
Getting my vacation payout from my old job was amazing and it allowed us to pay off our
credit card debt this month. Woo hoo!

6. Get a new job.
Done! I love my new job!

7. Continue to be politically active whether it is writing postcards to voters, contacting my
elected officials about things that are important to me, or participating in marches.

8. Run in at least three races this year including the Soldier Field 10 miler.
Done! This spring I did a 10k, Soldier Field 10 miler, and a half marathon.

9. Run one race with Izzy this year.
Still need to find a race to do with Izzy.

Six more months to finish the rest of these!

6.30.2019

North Shore Half Marathon

Right after finishing my first half marathon back in 2011, I told CP that I was so happy that I was never going to have to do another half. Well, a friend of mine signed up for a half earlier this year and I decided to also sign up because what's 3.1 more miles the weekend after running a 10 mile race? (LOL) I chalk it up to FOMO which is a silly reason to sign up for a long race, but I did it anyway.

The last time I ran a half I trained with a local Fleet Feet store in CT; this time I ran by myself because I didn't have a set time or day on the weekend that I would run. Last time I also had plantar fasciitis basically the entire time I trained; this time I was relatively pain-free in my heels. Of course it is also a move across the country, two kids, and 8 years later so things have changed slightly. Ha ha.

Stupidly, I stayed up too late the night before watching the Netflix move "Always Be My Maybe" with Ali Wong and Randall Park (which is awesome by the way- even CP liked it). Going to bed after 11pm the night before a half marathon where you have to be there at 6am isn't the best of ideas. But up I was to drive to the half. This time I decided that I would chug my Spark water bottle 45 minutes before the race started so that I would have two chances to go to the bathroom before the race started. I met up with my two friends who were in a faster corral and we hung out for a bit before they left for their corral. I peed one last time and got in my corral.

I started the race and felt pretty good. I didn't have to pee and it was cool enough that I felt good. I ended up peeing twice during the race and stopped at every water station to make sure that I had enough hydration. The first part of the course was through neighborhoods which was fine, but a lot of residents were coming and going throughout the race and at times would try to get through traffic which was annoying. I got really annoyed around mile 6 because the mile marker was clearly in the wrong place (far after we actually had hit mile 6) and it messed with my head. Around this time I heard from a nearby runner that "Heartbreak Hill" was coming up- a steep decline, turn the corner and then head right back up for a steep incline- so I took advantage of of the decline and let my legs go knowing that I was going to walk up that incline!

I felt pretty good until I hit mile 10. The third week of running 10 miles and only a week after running the Soldier Field 10 miler, my legs were begging to be done with the race. This part was mentally tough too- a very long out and back where you could see mile marker 11 but knew that you were still early in mile 9 so that you had a long way to go to just get back to the same place on the road. Plus, no shade.

My friend who finished earlier, his wife, and his kids were there at the finish line and that gave me a boost to run a little faster towards the finish line. I will say that I definitely do NOT need to do another half marathon. I was bummed that I didn't get a PR but I am 8 years older so I probably shouldn't have expected one. :-)

Soldier Field 10 Miler

Oh boy am I behind in my blogging! Let's dig into what I have been doing the past month+ with a few posts.

First up- the Soldier Field 10 miler! I have always wanted to do this race because it ends on the 50 yard line of Soldier Field. You all know that I am an Eagles fan, but getting to finish on the 50 yard line of an NFL stadium is super cool so I went for it. For Mother's Day this year I asked CP for one thing- the okay to sign up for this race and the half marathon the following weekend and the weekend time I would need to train for the races. Thankfully, he agreed.

I was really good to keeping to a good 3 day a week running schedule. After finishing the 10k in the snow, I set out to add mileage every week by following a half marathon training plan...so the weekend before this race, I ran 10 miles since the two 10 milers would be the longest runs before the half.

Friday night I took the train to my parent's house downtown and slept over at their place (they were in MI) so that I wouldn't have to get up hours earlier to get downtown. I brought a bagel, Spark, and all of my stuff. Saturday morning I woke up bright and early, ate my toasted bagel with butter, and dressed for the day. It had been scheduled to POUR RAIN all week so it was nice to see that the forecast had changed to sunny- but it was also going to be HOT.

I took a Lyft to Soldier Field and arrived about 50 minutes before the race was to begin. About 30 minutes before the race I chugged my water bottle filled with Spark for some caffeine and used the bathroom. I knew that I had to get into the corral at least 15 minutes before the race started. I stretched a bit and then watched as the Color Guard came out, a charity spokesperson talked for a few minutes, and then the elite and earlier corrals went off. The whole time I am thinking that I should run back to the bathroom to pee, but decided not to (I should have known better).

Needless to say, when my corral finally started the race, I really had to pee. My first chance to use a port-a-potty was not until about 2.5 miles in so I had an uncomfortable start to the race and then had to sit waiting at the port-a-potty for a bit.

The race had us start out going south along the lake and turn around halfway to head back to the stadium. The first 7 or so miles weren't so bad. It wasn't too hot out and I was feeling pretty good. Around mile 8 I was just SO HOT with the sun beating down on me and my legs felt like lead. I definitely started walking more than usual and it shows in my pace.

My goal going in was to finish in less than 2 hours so I *almost* made it. My body certainly wasn't used to the hotter weather as we have had a nice, cool spring so far so all of my training runs were in cooler weather. I believe that this is my first 10 miler so currently, this is my PR.

Day in the Life- Spring 2019

Spring DITL
April 30, 2019

CP is 42 years old
NSC is 40 years old
Izzy is 5.5 years old
Wes is 2.75 years old

Obviously it has taken me two weeks to post this because I had a lot going on, but I realized part way through this day that I wanted to document one of my last days going into the city for work (that's why the beginning of the post is devoid of pictures). So here it is!

April 29- CP passes out before 9pm on the couch, I head upstairs around 9:15, read one chapter of Lindy West's book Shrill and turn off the light at 9:30.

12:45- Get up to pee. Back to bed.

5:15- Alarm goes off. CP heads to the bathroom, I continue to sleep.

5:50- CP is done in the bathroom so I head in. I am plucking my eyebrows (they used to look good pre-kids- sigh) when I hear Izzy's door open and she runs downstairs. Not sure why she is up so early but at least CP can deal with her downstairs. I weigh myself- 199- WOO HOO!- and then jump in the shower.

6:25- I'm putting on face cream as I hear CP open up Wes' door to wake him up. Izzy bounds up the stairs and brags that CP made her an omelette for breakfast. She is wearing a new long sleeve shirt that I bought her yesterday at Old Navy that says "strong" a few times. Wes wants to wear the new pants I bought him yesterday that have sharks all over them. We decided to take the plunge and potty train him this past weekend and after two days of poop accidents, we needed some more pants! After seeing Wes wear his surfer shirt with a hood, Izzy changes her outfit and puts on her new hooded shirt as well.

6:35- The entire family is downstairs. I eat two over easy eggs on a corn tortilla with a little corn and black bean salsa (1 pt). Wes eats Cheerios and milk while I pack up my lunch. Izzy is making a card for a new kid in her class. CP gives everyone kisses and then leaves.

6:45- I have Wes sit on the small potty to try to go pee and he says that he can't. Izzy realizes she has to pee so she runs into the bathroom. I grab jackets for the kids and we head out the door. I'm happy that it is not raining because I got soaked while dropping the kids off yesterday morning and then walking to/from the train.

6:55- We arrive at school after listening to a few minutes of the Frozen soundtrack in the car. Wes starts to cry that I pushed the button to close the minivan door, I have him push the lock button on my keys and he perks up again. Izzy puts the weekly check into a mail slot and Wes insists on opening all of the doors. Izzy puts the card that she made into a new girls' cubby who is starting next week and we hang up her jacket. We head over to Wes' class to hang up his jacket and then say hi to the teachers. I talk to his teacher about how well Wes did yesterday with keeping his underwear dry and that we just need to get him using the potty for poop (maybe today- ed. note: HA HA HA no). I tell Wes that we should go potty and Izzy comes with. He pees successfully, everyone washes their hands, and we head back into the classroom. I ask the kids to give me hugs and Izzy pushes me over with her exuberance. Finally, they push me out the door and run back into their classroom to play.

I jump in the car to drive back home. Park the car, grab my backpack and start walking to the train. I'm still happy that it is barely drizzling- hopefully it stays this way for at least 45 more minutes. I catch the train and watch the Amazon Prime show Catastrophe on my ride in. I'm on Season 3 and I'm really enjoying the show! For my walk to work I put on the Nerdette Recaps Game of Thrones with Peter Sagal podcast about Season 8 Episode 3's show.

8am- I'm in the office and I check my email before grabbing some coffee with sugar free French vanilla creamer (1 pt). I start working on an employee's performance review.

9:30- One of my favorite coworkers who I am really going to miss stops by. We talk about my new job, running (he is training for the Chicago marathon again), and softball. I'm sad because he won't be in the office tomorrow for my going away party.

10am- Decide to do a DITL because I want to memorialize one of my last days working in the city. I start writing down the morning while I eat a banana and a Dannon Light n Fit Greek Yogurt Strawberry & Banana (2 pts). I continue to work on performance reviews for my employees and a flyer for an upcoming event for my boss.

My (mostly) caffeine and snack drawer

11:45- I bring my employee into my office for his mid year review. I also finish up the save the date flyer for my boss and send it over to him.

12:40- Heat up my lunch. Kale and butternut squash soup (0 pts) and a small portion of pineapple curry with shrimp (8 pts?) leftover from takeout this weekend. Sorry for the curry smell in the hallway fellow coworkers! I read through the Washington Post Daily 202 newsletter while eating lunch.

What a gross day outside
1:15- Update some spreadsheets on projects that I am handing off to my boss. I'm down to 9 unread emails! After a bit I tackle all of my files to see what I need to give to my boss and what I can recycle or toss. Almost 11 years of files. It's crazy what I am finding in them!

3pm- I snack on an apple. I talk to a few coworkers and read some personal emails. I walk a letter down to the mailroom to get some steps in. I have been sitting way too much today. I continue to go through files. So much paper to be recycled. The cleaning woman comes by and is shocked to see all of my pictures down and so much stuff missing from my office. I let her know that I am leaving and she gives me a hug and says she will miss me. I continue looking through files and promptly snag two nails. I go to the bathroom and head out the door to pouring rain at 4:30pm.

On the way to the train I continue to listen to the Nerdette podcast. It's raining and I am struggling to carry my heavy backpack with personal items from the office that I am bringing home and a bag with an umbrella.

5:35- I'm home. I feed the cats and head upstairs to change clothes. I start preparing dinner- greek chicken bowls with homemade tzaiki sauce, a small salad and homemade hummus. (Pita bread- 7 pts, white rice- 3 pts, salad dressing- 1 pt, hummus- 2 pts)

Hungry cats

Dinner

CP and kids come in with three bags of clothes- two poop accidents and one pee accident for Wes.

6pm- The kids sing during dinner. We talk about the fire drill that they had at school today and Wes starts to freak out that we have an alarm in our house. Wes runs to CP and sits in his lap because he gets scared with the conversation. I hope Wes gets over this because in a few years I can't imagine how he is going to do with active shooter drills. Izzy regales us with a story about the ice cream sandwich she got to eat for a classmates birthday today.

Wes at dinner

Izzy eating dinner

After a few more minutes of dinner, Wes toots- is it time to sit on the potty? Wes somewhat willingless sits on the small potty and sings his abcs. He wants to get off potty so CP plays the Poco Loco video (from Coco) to keep him on.

Afterwards, I help Izzy with homework while CP takes wes up for a bath.

Izzy runs upstairs for her bath as I head down to the basement to scrub poop out of Wes' underwear, throw the laundry into the washer and scoop some cat poop.

So sick of poop already

My back hurts as I walk up the stairs. I'm confused with whatever CP is playing upstairs for the kids while they are in the bath- a song about a donkey? Man, my stomach hurts- the greek bowls weren't a good choice. I gather pants, socks & underwear together for Wes at daycare tomorrow and help him brush his teeth.

Izzy puts on pajamas and pullup. I hug Wes and he starts to read with CP. Izzy picks out her Earth book and wants to read about volcanoes.

Posing in her skeleton pajamas

Halfway through I show her pictures of us in Hawaii. We read her book until 8, I give her a hug, then leave the room.

Wes decides that needs me again so pick him out of crib and sing him two songs. I put his blankets on him and head downstairs to get my running shoes on. While I think about it, I write the check for cleaners who are coming tomorrow and put the key outside so that they can get in. CP is busy cooking habanero peppers to make a sauce for the Cuatro de Mayo party we are having on Saturday.

I try to pick up the house as I walk through rooms so that the cleaners can do their job tomorrow. Move laundry from washer to dryer. I finally stop procrastinating and get on treadmill to watch Catastrophe. The speed on the treadmill is off so I have no idea how far I ran, but I ran for 45 minutes.

9pm- Take laundry out of dryer. Open computer box from my new company and set up the computer while stretching and talking to CP. Marshmallow is cuddling with CP on the couch while Cocoa is interested in my shoelace. I already have 57 emails (what? I haven't even started yet!)- thankfully mostly invitations from my new boss for meetings next week. I see a “virtual happy hour” meeting for Friday afternoon. How is that going to work- does everyone grab a beer and get on the video chat?

Email HR at the new company to let them know I had no problems logging in and put away computer. Tidy up downstairs a bit. I grab a fun size pack of M&Ms and eat it (3 pts) while I chug some water. CP and I have a conversation about how will we work pickup and dropoff next week with the kids now that I am going to work from home.

10:05- Head upstairs to shower.

10:50- I finally put my phone down and have trouble falling asleep.

Working from home

Weird. This WAS a draft and somehow it got published. Oh well, here is the final post.

Saturday morning while CP and Wes ran some errands, Izzy and I put together my new work desk.

Amazon special

As you can see, there isn't a lot of room for my desk so it was hard to find something that would work in the space while also allowing for some room for files, a pull out keyboard, etc. So far, so good.

My DIY treadmill desk!
After my first week of work when I STRUGGLED to get steps in- on Thursday I went for a 4.5 mile run after work and after finishing I still had not hit 10,000 steps- I decided that I needed to do something about it. I searched for DIY treadmill desks and found a super simple tutorial that was less than $20. I'm looking forward to using it during conference calls and trainings. I've heard that it's not great for the motor on a regular treadmill to use it for hours on end every day so I'll probably just keep it to an hour or two, but still, those extra steps will help so that my ass doesn't get too big while I work from home!

So far so good with my new job. I really like my boss and although it seems like there are some personality issues with another manager and one of my coworkers, that manager is leaving next month so hopefully things will settle down afterwards. Everyone seems really nice and I'm excited about the projects that I am starting to work on.

Champion of Trees 10K

On Sunday I ran in the Champion of Trees 10K (6.2 miles) with two friends. All week long the forecast was for rain so when the forecast changed to snow we were a least a bit happier. It started snowing as soon as we started our drive towards the race. (The snow did not stop until 8pm that night!!) Thankfully we got there in enough time to go to the bathroom, get lined up at the start, and even to get a heat pack from one of the sponsors.

My friend's husband runs way faster than us so he headed closer to the starting line while my friend and I stuck close to the 11 minute pace sign. The first part of the course is a small loop where you go up a fairly large hill early (Frost Hill), loop around towards the start line, and then have to do Frost Hill for a second time before doing a much larger loop. I am NOT used to running hills so let's just say my butt is seriously feeling it today!

I felt fairly good running so I left my friend to go faster on the downhill sections before we finished the first mile- gotta take advantage of those! Sadly I have no idea what my splits are because Nike+ thought that I ran 6.3 and once I changed the mileage to 6.2 the split information is wiped away. :-(

By mile 2 I put away the heat pack that I had been trading from hand to hand and took off my gloves. I wore a baseball cap so that it wouldn't snow/rain in my eyes and that somewhat helped, but it was windy and I was still getting a lot of snow in my face. Around mile 3 I noticed that my socks were wet which was a bit uncomfortable. During mile 3 was the only time I stopped to drink water on the course. By mile 4 I started trying to psych myself up and thought "less than 24 minutes left of running!" I had been trying to run up most of the hills on the course but in the last two miles I ended up walking at least part of most of them. Thankfully most of the last two miles are actually downhill so I saved a lot of time there. I was worried that I would slip but the ground temperature was warm enough that no ice formed during the race. Phew!

I kept thinking that my friend would catch up with me as I ran the first two miles without walking and then would take a walk break every 1/2 mile or so, but she stayed behind me the entire race. Once I hit mile 6 I looked for the finish but we had to run around a curve and it certainly felt like more than .2 of a mile before we finally hit the finish line! About a minute later my friend came through the finish line.

Me right after the race- check out the snow/ice on my hat brim!

Official 10K time: 1:06:20
Pace: 10:41/mile

A new 10K PR by over FIVE MINUTES!
(My last 10K and previous PR was this same race only four months after having Izzy. This is only my third time running a 10K.)

Thankfully all of us thought ahead to bring a new set of clothes so we peeled the wet clothes off in the bathroom after the race and changed into dry clothes for the ride home. I got home before CP and the kids so I took a nice warm bath and stayed inside the rest of the day while it snowed!

Next up? I have signed up for the Soldier Field 10 miler Memorial Day weekend and then the weekend after that, a half marathon!

Day in the Life- Winter 2019

Oh man I totally forgot to do a Fall DITL. :-(

Day in the Life- Winter 2019
Saturday, February 16th
CP is 42.5 years old
NSC is 40 years old
Izzy is 5 years old
Wes is 2.5 years old
Marshmallow is 6 years old
Cocoa is 3 years old

Friday night- Go to bed around 11pm after deciding with CP that we would start Game of Thrones from the very beginning before the last season starts in April. We make it through the first two episodes- it is interesting watching it for a second time.

Wes starts crying at 12:45am for some unknown reason so I head into his room. He complains about his foot hurting but I can’t find anything wrong. I bring him to the glider and start to rock him back to sleep. After about 5 minutes of rocking he is back asleep so into the crib he goes and I head back to bed.

At 6am Wes is yelling for us. I was in the middle of a very vivid dream so I’m pretty groggy. I tell CP “your turn” and turn over. CP goes in to Wes’ room but Wes yells at him “Go away! I want Mommy!” CP comes back into room but soon after puts clothes on and heads downstairs.

I fall back asleep until 6:30 when I hear Izzy singing. I stay in her room while she gets dressed for soccer class and then head downstairs with her. Izzy starts to watch Wild Kratts and I read some Washington Post articles online.

7:30- I go up upstairs to wake Wes up so that he can have breakfast. He is groggy and also wet. I change him into soccer clothes, he insists on being the person to turn off his bedroom light and we head downstairs.

Groggy Wes

Izzy is eating an “egg burger”.

Wes doesn't want his picture taken at breakfast

My breakfast- coffee with sugar free creamer and a broccoli and cheese omelette

8am- I run upstairs for a quick shower. We herd everyone in the car and are off to soccer class, talking about the clothes we need to bring for our upcoming trip to Mexico.

8:30- We arrive just as soccer class starts. Wes is not really into class and wants to put on his bear sweatshirt (only on his head) so that he can run around as Batman. Halfway through he wants to participate only with CP so we switch and I watch Izzy's class while talking with friends. Wes decides he wants me in class with him again towards the end.

"Batman" Wes

9:20- The kids run races against each other after class. We also make a bathroom stop.

9:45- We are home. I grab two bananas for the kids and bring them out to the car. CP and kids head off for clothes shopping as Wes is moving into 4t clothes and I'm unsure of what Izzy can fit into for our trip. I check Wes’ closet for size 10 shoes & sandals and he doesn't have anything. I also check Izzy’s room for shorts for our trip- unfortunately most everything is size 5t (aka too small).

Going through Izzy's closet

10:05- I get in my car and head for a wax appointment. Afterwards, I call CP to gauge where he is and how shopping is going. I decide I don't have enough time to run errands so I head home and read my Kindle book (The Marriage Pact) until CP and kids get back.

11:45- Earlier in the day we decided that we would head out to lunch since we don't have a lot of food in the fridge, so CP picks me up from home. I suggested Asian for lunch; kids want pizza. We have a coupon for pizza so we decide to do that. I end up getting BBQ chicken pizza....it was so tasty but I should have gotten salad. Halfway through lunch Wes screams that he has poop so I change his diaper in the bathroom. Izzy eats her entire pizza (!), Wes only eats two small pieces. The restaurant has free gelato for the kids so Izzy gets birthday cake flavor and Wes gets salted caramel. I take a small bite of Wes' gelato.

On the way home CP pretends to drive crazy and the kids love it. Wes says “it’s so crazy” which makes CP and I laugh. He also screams “Frozen on!” because he wants us to turn the Frozen soundtrack on. We remind him that he has to ask politely.

1pm- We are home and I bring Wes in the door screaming, bringing him upstairs for a nap. I read him a quick Thomas story and put him in his crib.

Izzy meets me in her room and we have a "fashion show" where she tries on her new clothes for me and we also try a few shorts on to see which ones she could wear in Mexico.

I then head downstairs to the basement to start the washer for kid clothes and sheets.

I decide to make some chai tea from loose leaves and it is delicious. CP lays down on the couch while Izzy is on her bean bag watching her new favorite show, Planet Earth.

CP is sous vide-ing our dinner

1:30- I leave house and call my mom who is on her way to their house in Michigan. We discuss having them over for dinner since we won't see them for a bit. I confirm that dinner also works for my dad. I then call CP who informs me that I need to get more meat- now. *sigh* I turn around and head to the grocery store. The store has some sample tables set up and damn- they have a brownie sample. I taste it and decide to get some for dessert tonight. I end up buying wine, lettuce, bananas, beef, and brownies.

Marshmallow and Cocoa hanging out

One minute later it is time to play

2:15- I drop the food off at home and finally I am off to do some shopping- Old Navy first. I find 2 shirts & a pair of skinny jeans for myself. I also find Wes 6 pairs of 4t pants, all on sale. Usually we get clothes from a friend but only had 1 pair of 4t pants handed down to us because her son ripped through the knees of all of the other ones.

3:15- Thankfully there is a grocery store in the same plaza as Old Navy as I forgot to pick up a lemon at the grocery store!

3:30- I head over to DSW and quickly find Wes new shoes and sandals in size 10. I eat an apple in the car ride home.

4pm- Just as I arrive home, CP is heading up the stairs to get Wes up from his nap. I also head upstairs to show Wes his new stuff. He likes the dinosaur sandals, but loves his new Lightning McQueen shoes even more and wants to wear them (he had the same pair in size 9).

4:30- I put in another load of laundry.

4:45- The kids go downstairs to the basement to play while I run upstairs to get workout clothes on. I grab water on the way.

5pm- I decide to turn on A Little Obsessed, Total Body Cardio, the precursor to 80 Day Obsession. I alternate focusing on my workout and yelling at the kids as they fight over various toys. I have about 5 minutes left in the workout when my parents come downstairs, so I decide to turn off the workout and stretch while talking to my dad.

Wes on the Barbie phone

The doorbell rings and it is friends dropping off clothes for Wes and Valentine’s for the kids. We talk for a minute or two before they leave.

I set the table while talking to my dad and at 5:45 run upstairs to quickly shower. Dinner is ready as I come downstairs. CP made steak with mushroom risotto and asparagus. Wes complains about the meat being “picy” (spicy) even though it is just salt and pepper on it. We cut off the sides of the meat and he eats a bit. Izzy manages to fall off her chair (second time today). I enjoy my glass of Rioja with my meal. After dinner we all split up a big brownie for dessert.

Wes fights eating tonight

My mom does the dishes and I package up the leftovers.

7:15- Izzy plays a game where she runs around asking people what she put in a gift bag. We all make silly guesses. The adults sit down to talk about some issues at my parent’s business and the health issues my dad’s sister is having while the kids run around the house.

Izzy "directing" Wes as usual

8pm- Wes heads up to bed with CP while the rest of us play "pass" with Izzy.

At 8:25 I tell Izzy she is heading up to bed at 8:30 and we have to start to calm down. She requests flying airplane and my mom acquiesces just once. Izzy requests that my mom puts her to bed- yes I get out of putting the kids to bed tonight!

Flying airplane

9:15- My parents leave. CP and I watch Game of Thrones Season 1, episode 3 and turn the tv to SNL at 10:30.

11:15- I am falling asleep so head upstairs, leaving CP sleeping on the couch. I don't turn off the light until 11:40- way past bedtime.
