Obama inks defense bill with hate crimes provision

WASHINGTON (AP) – Trumpeting a victory against careless spending, President Barack Obama on Wednesday signed a defense bill that kills some costly weapons projects and expands war efforts. In a major civil rights change, the law also makes it a federal hate crime to assault people based on sexual orientation.

“There’s still more fights that we need to win,” Obama said. “Changing the culture in Washington will take time and sustained effort.”

“This is a landmark step in eliminating the kind of hate motivated violence that has taken the lives of so many in our community,” said Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Changing the culture in Washington will take time and sustained effort.”  You and your party have already ‘changed’ Washington, Mr President, and I wish I could say, “for the better.”  …far from it!  When our legislators cannot foster enough support from fellow legislators and their constituents to pass a bill in and of itself, it is appended to a bill that must be passed.  That’s real up and up legislating, there!  It certainly exemplifies change in Washington that we the people had hoped for… NOT!

The [Shepard] amendment was opposed by far more than supported it.  It provisions the ability for the federal government to step in where it shouldn’t; it usurps the sovereignty of the States in adjudicating felonies in their courts.  Just why should a person’s sexual orientation matter in prosecuting a felony in a State?  ‘Hate’ speaks to motive and should be considered in the penalty phase, but should not facilitate the federal government stepping in and usurping a State’s judicial process.  As pointed out endless times, this amendment establishes a protected class of citizens.

Mr Barrios stated, “This is a landmark step in eliminating the kind of hate motivated violence that has taken the lives of so many in our community.”  Frankly, I would like to see that sound-bite validated with facts.  Of course it will never happen, because Mr Barrios’ claim will never be challenged by any responsible media.  I strongly suspect that more people die each year by choking on chicken bones than are gay lesbian victims of fatal ‘hate’ crimes based solely upon their sexual orientation.  Someone prove me wrong!

Murder is murder regardless of the sexual orientation of the victim… felonious assault is felonious assault regardless of the sexual orientation of the victim, etc.!  Come on, people get real and throw these errant lawmakers out of our government!  We deserve better than what we are currently getting.

Health Care Lessons Learned From TennCare”  (Be sure to watch the video!)

In the National Debate over health care Reform and a Public Insurance Option, many critics are looking at Tennessee.  The Volunteer State passed a health care reform experiment of their own in 1994.  It’s called TennCare and it set out to insure the uninsured by expanding Medicare to cover people who can’t afford private insurance.

The plan succeeded in some ways.  The number of uninsured in Tennessee dramatically dropped and the number of people seeking basic care in Emergency Rooms plummeted.

But it wasn’t long before TennCare nearly bankrupted the state as the public health rolls ballooned along with government costs.  By 2005, almost a third of the state budget was being spent on public health.  Out of pocket payments for members were reduced, but doctors and hospitals shifted costs to privately insured customers.

Okay, now multiply this experience by 49… just what do you think our national debt will look like a couple years after Obamacare is implemented?  Frankly, I do not want to even think of the probabilities.  If Obamacare becomes law and our lawmakers do not correct our growing national debt, we are in for an economic crisis that most likely will dwarf the Great Depression.  I am beginning to glimpse my golden years turning to red – what I have provisioned is in grave jeopardy courtesy of a few liberal elitists who know better than me!  …and that really ticks me off!

“Conservatives Maintain Edge as Top Ideological Group”

Conservatives Maintain Edge as Top Ideological Group

PRINCETON, NJ — Conservatives continue to outnumber moderates and liberals in the American populace in 2009, confirming a finding that Gallup first noted in June. Forty percent of Americans describe their political views as conservative, 36% as moderate, and 20% as liberal. This marks a shift from 2005 through 2008, when moderates were tied with conservatives as the most prevalent group.

All of this has potentially important implications at the ballot box, particularly for the 2010 midterm elections. The question is whether increased conservatism, particularly among independents, will translate into heightened support for Republican candidates. Right now, it appears it may.

Well now… I ‘hope’ we will see ‘change’ starting November 2010!  So far the liberal extremism permeating Washington DC is starting to turn citizens off politically/ideologically; they are starting to realize that the ‘stay-home-and-not-vote’ protest last year was in fact not too bright.  That’s water under the bridge and over the dam; so, stay focused on November 2010 and, “Cause something to happen.”  (Bear Bryant)

FACT CHECK: Health insurer profits not so fat

It would behoove the politicians demonizing the health insurers to vet their rhetoric before throwing out accusations that are unsubstantiated.  I know it is chic for Democrats to demonize the ‘big guys,’ you know, the ‘ones’ that are filthy rich and earn rake-in ‘obscene profits’ in order to appeal to the ‘little guys;’ the moderate and lower income folks.  Too, it is politically correct for Democrats to advance the notion that the lower income earners’ situation is a direct result of the ‘rich;’ the ‘little guy’ cannot advance because the ‘big guy’ sucks up all the opportunities and wealth.  Hence the health insurers become the logical target for the Democratic leadership in their advancement of a government run/controlled healthcare system; however, some legitimacy to the ‘facts’ being bandied about would lend much more credence to the campaign.

I can’t help but wonder if Nancy and company are satisfied with a six percent profit in their [business] investments?

I believe it was Abraham Lincoln who stated, “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”  I guess the Democrats bank heavily on the middle axiom… You can fool… some of the people all the time.

$13,000,000,000,000!

October 23, 2009

Our national debt is forecast to climb over $13 trillion.  That’s $43,333 per every person counted in our last census.  Considering that less than fifty percent actually pay [income] taxes that becomes $86,666 per person.  However not each person pays [income] taxes, so let’s take one third of the fifty percent… that now equals $260,000 debt share per paying taxpayer.  I have no doubt my little example is on the conservative side.  (No pun intended!)  Think about that and let it sink in… over a quarter of a million dollars in debt share for those who contribute a significant portion of money to our national coffers.

Dems seek cover to boost debt limit

The Senate must soon increase the national debt limit to above $13 trillion — and Democrats are looking for political cover.

Knowing they will face unyielding GOP attacks for voting to increase the eye-popping debt, Democrats are considering attaching a debt increase provision to a must-pass bill, possibly the Defense Department spending bill, according to Democratic and Republican sources.

Adding it to the defense bill would allow Democrats to argue that they voted for the measure to help troops in harm’s way — and downplay that their vote also expanded the limit for how much money the country can borrow.

Gives a whole new meaning to, “We support the troops,” doesn’t it?

Gay Reversal Advocates Say School Libraries Banning Their ‘Ex-Gay’ Books

Visit most public school libraries and you’ll find an array of books that address the subject of homosexuality. Many include sexually explicit content, and some even include graphic images.

But if you’re looking for a book that refers to the possibility that homosexuality can be “reversed,” a Chicago-based group says your best bet is the banned books list.

…Library Bill of Rights… states…

— Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.

— Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment.

— Libraries should cooperate with all persons and groups concerned with resisting abridgment of free expression and free access to ideas.

So, it is okay for school libraries to stock and sign-out books that are [graphically] gay, but the alternative point of view is verboten?  Wow, way to go educators… keep that healthy exchange of information and points of view flowing.  Out of curiosity, I wonder if the heterosexual material is anywhere near as voluminous or explicit as the homosexual material.  Any bets?  Our educators doing what they do best… not listening to parents and not responding to points of view they consider unfavorable toward ‘the’ agenda.  Oh, for the days when educators kept their personal and political opinions to themselves…

Pre-K thru 12, no less…

Throw ’em all out!

October 21, 2009

I am so sick of partisanship that I could just… scream!  (Okay, so I used ‘scream’ in lieu of a stronger word.)

Democrats lock Republicans out of committee room

What goes around comes around.  Payback is a bi#%h.

Just what have we the people gained from such childish antics?  How much does this immature behavior cost us?  I am beside myself with disgust and pure contempt for all of our Senators and Representatives, regardless of party affiliation.  These congressmen/women are elected to be about the people’s business, and that does not include monkey business.

Throw ‘em all out and replace ‘em with some adults who will actually work together to conduct the people’s business!  What a bunch of elitist smucks!

76 days since request for more troops, Obama accused of stalling

…  In Washington, where President Barack Obama has now held five war councils, they are starting to call it dithering.

With another council on the Afghan war scheduled for this week, US officials admit it could be November before a decision is finally taken on whether to agree to General Stanley McChrystal’s request for more troops. One participant revealed that the protagonists have not yet discussed troop numbers.

Latest polls show a majority of Americans now disapprove of Obama’s handling of a war which may come to define his presidency. Many senior members of his own party are in open revolt.

…Obama accused of stalling”  Ya think?!?!  What in the world could have given it away?

Okay, Mr President, it is time to assume your first and foremost constitutional duty – that of being the Commander in Chief of the military forces.  It is time to make a decision… either: send additional troops, withdraw, or just let the Afghans attrit (military vernacular that verbalizes ‘attrition’) the forces currently in country.  Based upon the current situation, I would guess that the last choice had already been made.  The sad part is, the troops in theater also believe the last choice has been made, because they see nothing decisive coming from their CINC.

Way to build morale, there, Mr President… and look out for your our troops.

“Rancid Gluttony”

October 15, 2009

U.S. troop funds diverted to pet projects

“Raiding those accounts to fund big-ticket projects the military does not want, but that benefit senators’ home states or campaign contributors, amounts to “rancid gluttony,” he said.”

Fire the lot them!  Not one should remain in office!  Representatives and Senators who care more about ‘buying’ votes to stay in office than doing what is right for America and the troops do not deserve our support!  It is a sorry day indeed when our federal lawmakers have decayed into corrupt gluttonous elitists!  Sweep them all out of Washington and let it be a lesson to the next batch that the people govern this country, not corrupt elitist congressmen/women!

A politician who ‘gets it!’

Lieberman opposes Baucus health bill

Lieberman echoed concerns that the Finance committee bill would hike taxes on insurance companies, which would then be passed along to consumers.

“I’m afraid that in the end the Baucus bill is actually going to raise the price of insurance for most of the people in the country,” Lieberman said.

“If you ask me, I’d say we should really focus on what’s called healthcare delivery reform,” Lieberman added. “To me, the first big step is to make some changes that really do bend the increasing costs of healthcare down.”

Lieberman (and I’m sure there are other politicians who…) gets it!  Increase taxes on insurance companies and the consumer pays increased premiums.  Corporations do not absorb taxes… they pass the cost along to the consumers.  So, please, stop trying to blow smoke up my a$$ by telling me (or implying) that the cost of healthcare will be offset by increasing the taxes levied against the insurance companies.

If you truly want to reform healthcare, then follow the money.  Healthcare insurance is costly because… medical costs are expensive because… malpractice insurance is high because… folks love to sue because… sympathetic juries award unreasonably exorbitant damages.  Tort reform must be part and parcel to any measures aimed at curbing the rising costs of health care.  Successfully targeted tort reform may not reverse rising cost, but if the escalating cost can be held to zero for several years, then gains have been made.

Government intervention into doctor and hospital earnings will only serve to de-incentivize the industry.  If you truly want to wreck healthcare, let the government start capping earnings; the smart and talented minds will leave the system.  Why should a young person spend ten to fifteen years learning specialized medicine only to be told his/her annual salary cannot exceed a government mandated maximum?  It is extremely costly in both personal sacrifice and financial expenses to become a leading surgeon or specialized practitioner.

Our government Representatives and Senators, along with our President, must stop this bullish rush to pass something labeled ‘healthcare reform.’  There needs to be more careful deliberation and communication to come up with measures that will truly help reduce the costs of health care and make insurance affordable for those who do not have, but desire, health insurance.

When my federal government espouses that a given healthcare bill is going to cost $829 billion, I have to ask, where is the cost reduction?  If the federal government incurs a cost of $829 billion, guess who pays the tab?  Nope, not the insurance companies…  If my health care costs decrease two percent, but my federal taxes increase twelve percent, have I experienced a savings?

Okay Congress, put the bong away and pull the pipe out of the public’s a$$.  Start earnestly discovering why healthcare costs are high and then look at measures that will reduce those costs.  Don’t charge me $10,000 a year (in taxes) for the ability to save $2,000 in medical costs.  Get it right or get gone!
